Hannahan Does It Again As Tribe’s Hot Road Trip Continues
April 21, 2012Buckeye Basketball: Amedeo Della Valle Commits To Ohio State
April 21, 2012According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden senses that the Browns like him enough to select him with either their 22nd or 37th pick in the NFL Draft later this week.
“‘I know Colt had a good year last year, and he’s a good football player,’ Weeden said in a phone interview this week. ‘But I’m a competitor, and I want to play as soon as possible. I’d be excited about the opportunity to come in and compete with him and see how things pan out.'”
Weeden, 28, is regarded by many as the fourth best quarterback prospect in the draft behind Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Ryan Tannehill. He threw for 4,727 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions last season with the Cowboys. His age, however, remains a concern as he will turn 29 in October, and the Browns will have to weigh the value of drafting a quarterback with a limited shelf life that may be able to make an impact sooner rather than later.

If he is available later, I wouldn’t mind this pick. But RB, WR, and OL need to be taken care of first if you ask me.
I understand the concern about his age, I do, but when fans are screaming for wins NOW, why does it matter how old he will be in a few years if he does in fact improve the team NOW? Let’s assume he comes in and is an immediate improvement over Colt – now we have a starter for at least a few years and can focus on filling other holes, but at the same time start looking for the next QB to replace him when necessary. No team is ever content with their QB depth, so obviously we’ll always be looking ahead making sure that the replacement is there when the time comes, and while that time might be sooner for Weeden than for a younger guy, improvement is improvement, and the sooner the better.
Just because he’s 28 years old doesn’t mean he is an NFL ready QB. He may have put up big numbers at OKSt, but that was in a shotgun exclusive, 1-read, air raid offense against less-than-porous Big XII secondaries. At his age, he must start from day 1 or it is a wasted pick and I’m not convinced he can transition from a relatively simple shotgun spread to a complex NFL offense in 6 months.
I’m also against using any pick in rounds 2-4 on a QB. The top 120 picks are too valuable to use on a QB unless you believe 110% in his abilities. If you don’t believe enough in a QB to take him with your first pick, just wait until Saturday.
He said “‘I know Colt had a good year last year…”
Well, Weeden is obviously insane to say that. I don’t want him now.
where’s the part where “Weeden Senses Browns Like Him?”
That’s just dumb…Noone wants to win now. Everyone wants to win every game every year.
I honestly can’t tell if you are serious or forgot the sarcasm font. Although your last sentence could have been typed in the obvious font.
I’m just saying on the scale of importance winning>>>age.I probably should have mentioned that I am not necessarily a proponent of drafting Weeden, for some reason I just felt like chipping in my two pennies on his age situation. Probably should have just stayed out of it…
It was sarcasm. Best player available..period. Don’t take a 29 yr old 2nd or 3rd rounder with the 4th pick overall. We need to be good every year and make smart long term decisions.
Like others have said as long as it’s not 4, 22 or 37 I’d be okay with the selection.
And definitely go Bruins!
Or fill in the pieces you need around a QB, and be ready to take Barkley next year in the top 5.
100% agree
What’s it matter? Most players have come and gone by the age of 29 for the Browns…Then they wait til a player is in his mid 30’s and past his prime to pick him up!!!
