Box Score: Indians 4, Tigers 2

Shaky defense was the story of this game. A bunt double and a misplayed line drive enabled the Tigers to score a pair off McAllister, and the Tigers had a few misplays of their own which helped the Tribe outscore the kitties and earn a series win, with the possibility of a sweep tomorrow.

  • Nobody

FWIW, the division standings right now look a lot like the standings for the late 90′s Indians, especially 1996 and 1998…

  • mgbode

    0 for 9 w/ 8 LOB in 2 games

glad to see that big FA signing is paying dividends for Detroit (for me to poop on!)

  • mgbode

hey, if the White Sox make some “white flag” trades like they did back then, I will not complain.

  • JNeids

    Roll Tribe. That is all.

  • cmm13

    Vinny freaking Pestano. Wow.

  • EyesAbove

Good ballgame tonight. Eerily similar situation to last season at this time. Tribe is playing well and getting some breaks, Tigers look like they are sleepwalking.

  • akzipper

Too bad we have to face Verlander tomorrow…oh well just keep it close and I will be happy!

  • cmm13

Going to tomorrows game. Can’t wait for Masterson to wake up, pitch lights out and us sweep the series.

  • mgbode

yesterday you said you’d be happy if we won one more game.  well, thank Zach for the series win and be happy :)

    and Verlander wears girls underpants.

  • Jeff D

    Seconded!

  • Pete

I don’t think I’ve screamed at a TV that loudly in a couple of years. So awesome. Then for Pure Rage to burn them down in the 9th was so immensely satisfying.

  • BIKI024

it’s early in the season my friend, they have plenty of time to heat up, and I’m sure they will, just hope not against us..

  • akzipper

Yeah count me in the “wait and see” category. Even though I’ve been to plenty of games this year, I can’t help but think of last year. I think it’s part of being a cleveland fan and always being negative.

  • Hypno_Toad

Win of the season so far. Amazing. Just amazing. This team has willed themselves to so many victories already this year. There’s no quit in these guys I tell ya!

  • TSR3000

    All hail hypno toad.

  • mgbode

you could think of it like that, or you could just enjoy the view from 1st place :)

  • Herr Dr.

Zack Greinke, anyone? The Royals CC? I, personally, am willing to offer one Matt Laporta.

  • kjn

Zach McAllister for Austin Kearns = amazing

  • mgbode

also remember that Greinke has balked at playing in a big market before.  he likes the life of the small market teams.   so, it’s not a situation where NYY, Boston, etc. will trade for him and expect him to sign long-term.

how much is a 4 month Greinke rental worth?   it’s an interesting discussion.

  • mgbode

we seem to do our best trading aging veterans with nothing left in the tank for marginal prospects that somehow pan out better than the top tier prospects for us.

perhaps Thomas Neal is our LF-RH-power-bat answer?  (got him for O-Cab last year)

wondering what we can get for Damon?

  • AlexMathews

    WE NEED HITTING

  • AlexMathews

The only issue is…what team would possibly trade for Damon?

  • mgbode

we have been able to trade Kearns and O-Cab.   let him get a little hot streak going and someone will offer something.   i don’t understand it, but it’s happened before.

  • mgbode

first, you can always use an ace in the playoffs and/or for a playoff push.

second, our hitting is vastly underrated:

2nd in OBP (AL) due to highest BB% and 2nd lowest SO%
7th in runs (AL) only behind the AL East and Texas

our main problem on offense is that we only have doubles-power.  we are 3rd in the AL in doubles (Red Sox, as virtually always with the Green Monster, lead the AL).

we are 3rd last in HRs.   if we can level that out to get some more HRs (even at the expense of some of those doubles) while maintaining the BB% and SO%, we’d be in great shape on offense.

(easier said then done, I know)

Dude we got Zac Attack for Kearns too!  Need to get Neal up here and give him a shot….

wait until Damon gets hot, and Grady is back, and someone on another team gets hurt and the door opens (2 of these things probably won’t happen)

    22K last night! (exactly….odd)

  • mgbode

and only 3K behind Oakland now.  watch out A’s!

  • AlexMathews

Most of our hitting seems to be circumstantial.

The benefit of our offense is it does tend to be even, as opposed to a few stars carrying the team. And yes, we walk a lot and don’t strike out often…however, the team’s batting average is still quite pedestrian.

With the possible exception of Asdrubal Cabrera, there’s not a single guy we can count on to hit consistently. That is a frightening prospect, because against ace-quality pitching (which you will see in the playoffs), the offense will struggle to score.

A few scattered hits here and there up and down the lineup does not necessarily equal runs, and that’s the problem with our “doubles” offense.

EDIT: To prove a point, the best right handed hitter on the team is Jose Lopez. That is a problem. “Timely hitting” is a phrase that’s often been used to describe this team, and that has always been a phrase that scares me, because a good chunk of that has to do with luck. I’d like luck to be removed from this equation as much as possible, and the only way to do that is to get more hitting talent.

  • mgbode

not sure I get what you mean.  circumstantial hitting implies luck.  walking & striking out are not supposed to have luck involved (depending on the umpire).

    OBP >> BA

now, our SLG% isn’t as good as it could/should be to have a dangerous offensive club (see doubles vs. HR power). but, we have lots of guys with a MLB track record of high OBP, which is a good thing (Asdrubel, Choo, Hafner, Santana).   Them being even more patient this year is good.

we are scoring in the middle of the pack in the AL.  it’d be nice to move that number up, but there’s only so much we can do (improving LF sure would help).

“ace-quality” pitching.  from who?   Masterson and Ubaldo are struggling.  Lowe is our current ace.  Yes, they can rebound, and I hope they do.
