Cleveland Browns switching to white facemasks?

Browns LB Chris Gocong tweeted a picture of T.J. Ward in his new helmet today. The interesting part of the photo to uni-nerds like myself is that the facemask is white.

It seems unlikely that the Browns would be making that switch. First off, if they were going to do so, why not unveil that along with the new uniforms? Second, at the recent rookie camp all the players were wearing brand new helmets with the grey bars. Why issue the new players equipment that isn’t going to be used?

My guess is that the helmet Ward is trying on is new from the manufacturer and they haven’t switched out the facemask.

But hey, I could be wrong.

UPDATE: Gocong tweeted that the helmet in the photo is an old stock helmet from the equipment room. The grey bars are staying.

    You’re right, it seems unlikely that the Browns would be switching especially since Randy Lerner is the one who made the decision a couple of years ago to return to the gray facemasks.

    Not sure why he would decide to go back now.

    Lerner made that decision?  I didn’t know that…another FAIL!  The white looks much better I always thought it did.  I’m guessing the helmets probably came with white as the default and will be switched out. 

    P.S. I hope Ward is ON THE FIELD for the upcoming season with either color face mask.

    I think the wihte looks way better than the bla gray.  There is no gray in our uniform, why would you go with gray?  Just because its old school?  BORING!!  Actually they should rock brown face masks.

    I know I am in the minority here, but we need a complete overhaul of our uniforms.  Keep the helmet that is fine, but “modernize” those things.  You know they were good in the 80′s when the team was good.  Now they just remind me of suck and boring.  Jazz them up a bit and get in the 21st century.

    As a player, I would REALLY prefer the bars not be white. Looking through white bars is very annoying. I’ve never had grey bars but the darker the color the better. …and the more matte the sheen of the color the better as well. For the player’s sake, I hope they don’t go to white.

    before reading that update I was about to ask what brand/manu the helmet was because it looks old school (pure dome helmet without the breathing holes, and extra design that manufacturers are saying can help reduce concussions)

    anyways, to turn this into a positive note, my feeling on the cheerleaders is that they should allow some of the HS cheer teams (4 per home game) come and cheer on the Browns.  give the HS squads a cool perk.

    Nooooooooooo I prefer older more professional women especially with the way the Browns play.  Besides I think they already have something where HS squads are at games.  The few times I went, free, I saw what appeared to be HS cheerleaders.

    I know mgbode its all about winning, I totally get it.  I want to win as much as the next guy.  I just think this look is tired.  Screw tradtion when, since 99 they have ruined whatever tradition we had in this look.  I’m all for bringing back the orange pants even if its just for the white jerseys.  Do something different.

     Yeah, he made the decision because he wanted the team to return to their traditional look which is not the white facemasks.

    The gray ones are as much of the team’s uniform history as the brown jerseys.

    Dear Texas and Pennsylvania,
    You are the only two states that I would even allow into the conversation with Ohio for most unhealthy addiction to the game of football, I’ve been to Houston, Dallas,  Pittsburgh, and Philly.  I’ve been to Happy Valley and I’ve been to Bryan(t) and Happy Valley.  No doubt you have passionate fans.
    I submit to you that we here in NEO have posted 3-1 messages about the Browns apparently NOT changing the COLOR OF THEIR FACEMASKS in comparision to the recap of a win by our first place Baseball team.  Count me as 2-0 in that regard and I would sell the Browns to Baltimore again for a World Series ring. 
    So Texas and Pennsylvania, whattya got?

    I agree!!  Brown with orange pants has always been my favorite look!!  I am with Jeremy on this as well!  Time to modernize the whole look!  Keep the helmet with a white face mask and get a whole new look!  The gray face masks have GOT to go!  They look hideous!

    I would be in favor of this too.  I’m going to get shot by everybody reading this, but I think pro cheerleaders are tacky.  If the point is just to have beautiful women on the sideline, why not just put a bunch of women in bikinis on the sidelines?  Maybe you could build a pool behind the endzone and players could catch touchdowns while falling into a pool of gorgeous women.  I just think the pro cheerleaders end up looking like a bunch of morons with pom-poms.

    We were there for softball tournaments 3 years in a row, unfortunately we were there in June before footbal kicked off in full force. Although much like here football offseason is sometimes more of a hot button than the actual season.  I spent most of my time in bars and eating brisket while my wife coached.  I remember a bunch of locals insisting that I was in Bryant Texas, they had a Paul Brown sized love for the Bear even though none of them had been born when he was there. To be honest I didn’t know College Station was a city unto itself, I thought it was just part of Bryan.  As the philosopher Biggius Smallius once said “If you don’t know, now you know.”

    I think it’s funny to call either Bryan or College Station a ‘city’.    You were there in June, so you saw it in it’s pure “no college student” force.   It’s a fun little town (THE CHICKEN!!!), but when I think of farm towns that happen to have a big college smack in the middle, I think of Bryan/College Station.

    pro-cheerleaders started really going to what you are mentioning after the movie “The Replacements” which made fun of it.  Somehow that made the NFL go, “hey, great idea!”

    if browns wanna change thier luck,they should switch to white face masks…….im pretty sure the mack and byner days with the origanal dogpound they wore white face masks,plus they look better???? lol just sayin
