While We’re Waiting… Helping Weeden, valuing Kyrie and assessing the risk involved in playing football

May 16, 2012Having not hosted All-Star festivities since the opening of the Gateway District in Cleveland, Dan Gilbert and the Cavaliers are hoping to build off of the momentum from the recent opening of the Horseshoe Casino and be a destination for the NBA’s best at some point in the near future.
”That is something definitely that we are interested in,” Gilbert said on Tuesday afternoon following the crowning of point guard Kyrie Irving as NBA Rookie of the Year. “‘I hope in the next few years we’d be able to get it. ‘I’m going to do our best and I’ll talk to the commissioner (David Stern). We’ll be talking to the league very shortly.'”
The earliest Cleveland could be in the mix for the All-Star festivities would be 2015. Given the continuing evolution of the Casino (Phase II is set to open within the next few years) as well as the building of Clevleand’s Medical Mart, there would be no hurry in landing an All-Star hosting bid; this is fortunate given the other NBA teams looking to do the same. The NBA typically prefers to have the event in warmer cities to take advantage of the weather, also requiring that the host city has ample hotel accommodations for players, fans and media. It appears that the “weather” trend could be bucked as both New York and New Jersey have also expressed interest.
In 1997, the league commemorated its 50th anniversary by holding the All-Star game in Cleveland — within the then-recently erected Gund Arena — and invited the top 50 all-time players, who were honored during a halftime ceremony.

This would be a good thing but hopefully everyone can thicken their skin up a bit by then because there will be some serious complaining and Cleveland-bashing by the national writers who get their February vacations relocated.
I was away at college for the ’97 game, so I would love for us to have one here. Not for the game itself, but all the stuff that goes around it.
Gilbert would LOVE the casino money windfall that he would get from something like this happening. I think we are going to be far down the list of likely candidates though.
The allstar game is like the pro-bowl.. Pointless. At least the MLB tries to make the game competitive and not look like a highschool pickup game.
chance of injury:
In a football game – very high
In a basketball game – fair
In a baseball game – virtually nill
that’s why the DL is so empty for all baseball teams
To make it more clear….
chance of serious injury DURING GAME:
In a football game – very highIn a basketball game – fairIn a baseball game – virtually nill
or not…..haha
yeah, I guess I don’t understand. where are all these baseball players getting injured if not in games (besides the occasional Rockie Family Deer Hunting Outing)
Maybe you haven’t seen a pitcher throw a baseball yet. It’s not as simple as you think.
except for cleveland…
There are 162 games a year in baseball, of course injuries will happen. Injuries happen at a much higher rate in football over the course of the 16 game season.
Say 10 players get hurt for a baseball team and a football team in one season. That means that there are 10 injuries in 16 games for football, and 10 injuries in 162 games for baseball. It seems fairly obvious that the likelihood of seeing an injury at a baseball game is much less likely than seeing an injury at a football game
