Former Indian Kerry Wood to retire today

Kerry Wood saved 28 games for the Indians in his season and a half with the team. He will be remembered most for his fireball days as a starting pitcher for the Cubs. After 1581 strikeouts in 1379 innings over 14 ML seasons, the righty is reportedly hanging up the cleats.

“Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood will retire on Friday, a source familiar with the situation told’s Bruce Levine. Wood, 34, is 0-2 with a 8.64 ERA and has been battling health issues all season. Wood is best-known for his 20-strikeout game during his rookie of the year campaign in 1998, earning him the nickname ‘Kid K.’ “

TD will have more on his time with the Indians later today.

Makes that glove he recently threw into the seats worth a whole lot more.

His name was brought up on Mike and Mike after hamilton’s 4 HR day. They were talking about the rarest feats in MLB history.

16 guys with 4 HRs in a game, but only 5 games pitched with 20 K’s. Wood, randy Johnson, Clemens (twice!), and someone I’m forgetting. They stated the 20 K game was rarer than the 4 HR game. Which is true, kind of. Depends on your definition of rare.

Since only 2 guys start a game, yet about 18 guys have a chance to hit 4 HR’s every game (give or take on the pitcher/DH) that 4 HR feat is actually a lot more rare if you go on sheer numbers of opportunity. I guess this could be quantified by finding out how many games have ever been started by pitchers and how many games have been started by regular fielders and see what the lower percentage is. I’m guessing the 4 HR game.

It’s too bad Kerry never panned out here.  He was the last big free agent this front office went after.  Another example of a small market team having to strategically spend their money and pick their battles, and when one (or three…Wood, Hafner and Westbrook) doesn’t pan out, it sets them back for several years.  I don’t really blame Wood, just wasn’t a good situation after it was apparent that we weren’t going to contend for the duration of his stay here.
