May 3, 2012It appears that comments by Colt McCoy’s father, Brad, have sealed the fate of his son with regard to the player’s future with the Cleveland Browns.
Though the Browns had hoped to land quarterback Brandon Weeden with the 37th-overall pick, the team was in fact ready to replace Colt McCoy, writes ESPNCleveland’s Tony Grossi, after McCoy’s father went to the media following his son’s concussion against the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 8, 2011.
“I’ve been told that McCoy’s fate as a former starter was sealed when his father sounded off about the club’s handling of his concussion,” writes Grossi. “The comments did not drive the pursuit of a new quarterback, but I believe they contributed to McCoy’s demise.”
In 2011, McCoy regressed mightily from his rookie campaign, completing only 57 percent of his passes at 5.9 yards per attempt. He would miss the final three games of the season following the concussion, sustained within a game wherein he would ultimately return to the playing field, leading to a whirlwind of criticism and league attention.
Grossi’s report also confirms WFNY’s intial belief that the Browns were targeting Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright with the 22nd-overall selection in the recent draft, but opted to go with Weeden following the selection of Wright by the Tennessee Titans at No. 20.

What, Concussions only happen in sports? What about anyone who has ever had an injury in the workplace. Football is a barbaric sport and you run the risk of getting hurt and getting concussions. I’ll take $500,000 a year to get a concussion and throw interceptions any day of the week.
My argument is that the Browns weren’t wrong in letting them back in the game or the way they handled the situation. My argument is that the Browns have every right to hold Brad McCoy’s comments against Colt. Parent’s get too involved in sports in general and the last place it should happen is at the professional level. It only makes things worse when a bitter father tries to play the voice of reason.
Okay Chad, let’s say your son has an injury in the workplace. Let’s say he’s a lineman for the electric company, and he’s fixing a downed wire right after a big storm. A weak tree branch falls on his head and gives him a concussion. He’s out on his feet.
His crew chief gives him a 30-second examination and tells him to finish fixing the hot wire, grab a chain saw, get up the ladder, and cut down the rest of the branch.
The next day the Plain Dealer calls you up and asks you what you think about that.
What are you gonna say?
While I am a huge Colt fan I dont deny that he hasnt played well enough to instill faith that he’s the long term answer. That being said, how can anyone realistically be expected to succeed with a bottom 5 WR core, constant disarray on the line, and an inept coaching staff?
If you remember, Ohio State beat Texas in Texas when McCoy was a freshman. The game was nationally televised on ABC (the brains behind ESPN).
I do remember. I also have nightmares remembering Colt get back at the Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl.
Actually Colt’s father was the high school football coach. At least have some knowledge of what you are talking about.
Actually Johnny U was cut by the Steelers so he may actually end up being Johnny U. The one thing people forget, the players loved playing for Colt, way more than Wallace or Dellhomme. For less than 500k a year at QB Colt was a bargain and performed better than they hoped given the pathetic OL and Hollis lack of professionalism and the no hands or feet team they had at receiver. Good luck Weeden, your gonna need it.
I’m sure the receivers loved the “buddy passes” that colt threw sometimes so yeah sure the receivers ” loved” playing for Colt. By the way a little bird told me when he talked to Colt about what was wrong with the offense, Colt threw the receivers under the bus blaming them, take it FWIW, but there was no reason to lie to me because I was already preaching that Colt didn’t have an NFL ready arm. BTW a buddy pass is when the QB is about ready to get his bell rung and he passes the ball to his “buddy” when his buddy has no chance to properly defend himself… reference Harrison vs. Massaquoi and Cribbs among others.
I dont think it was the PD calling anyone they got the call.Then I’d say why are you upset that the branch took someones porch out, mistakes happen in the middle of a storm. BTW no one pays to see branches being cut down.

How did it becomes the PD’s main purpose to promote irreconcilable rifts between offensive starters and the front office? What would they do without the “quarterback controversey” storyline? Would not the subscribers of the paper want actual football reporting over the constant soap opera stuff? I am stunned at the dysfunctionality of the PD’s Browns coverage.
Have fun with that. Us people that aren’t delusional and impatient will be waiting outside the mental asylum for your release.
You’re right, we will be lucky to be a .500 team. But look at the roster. Just look at it. You yourself were just describing it in the most negative of terms, and yet you’re expecting consistent positive results? This team was managed into the ground over the last few years before Heckert and Holmgren showed up, and it takes time to recover from the kind of mismanagement the Browns suffered.
So you have two choices. Either understand this team’s limitations and accept that this is a work in progress, thus having appropriate expectations; or, you can delude yourself into thinking this team is something it’s not and be constantly disappointed and upset.

the additional unhappy outcome is that wfny’s growing affiliation with the PD has seemingly handcuffed their commenting on this. or maybe theyre ok with it, dont know.
Why do you think the players loved playing for Colt? There’s nothing to suggest this at all. He made his O Line look worse than it was and made his receivers fear for their lives.
I agree with you but MKC called Brad, Brad did not initiate the conversation.
I think is arm was one of his better physical attributes, it was his lack of pocket presence, poor accuracy and inability to time when to throw passes so they hit guys as they made their break in the route. He always waited for them to break then he threw (see interception against Pittsburgh right after he came back in from the concussion). It’s like he was still in high school and never caught up to the NFL yet. Guys had to be standing all alone for him to throw it over 8 yards down field.
Would not the PD readers want an actual NFL caliber QB at some point over the past 10 or so years? Maybe that was the reporters’ reasoning for the “QB controversy”.
When the play on the field is clearly trash, somebody better be stirring things up.
We wouldn’t have heard one peep from Brad McCoy had Colt been able to lead the Browns to a win. It was a classic excuse maker move. Numerous guys trick coaches to go back into games, and we never hear their daddy’s whining to the media.
If Colt played well last year, none of his dad’s comments would’ve even mattered.
Yes, Brad McCoy was Colt’s high school coach, but he HAS parlayed that into speaking arrangements on such topics as “How to raise Godly children”

He clearly has leveraged his sons success into a career that is a little more fruitful than being a high school teacher and coach. There is no doubt in my mind that he wouldn’t have been hired to speak if his son wasn’t as successful as he was. Colt flaming out of the NFL can’t in any way help Brad McCoy’s speaking career into the future, at least not for the large profits he’s getting now.
I don’t think the Browns made Colt go back in the game like you are suggesting. It was more like Colt made every effort to convince the coaches he was fine so they let him back in. Then when he didn’t pull off the heroic victory, the excuses starting coming out and his father started deflecting too.
Colt’s dad knows better than to do this type of thing. Colt’s dad also probably knows more about what’s going on behind closed doors in Berea and probably knew things weren’t working out the way he planned for his son. The concussion was an easy way for him to sound off to get the attention off his son’s poor performance all season.
Think of it in comparison to Hillis’ “ailments” last season. How many times did we hear his father publicly defending his sons decision not to play with strep?

Sounds like the same old story… Browns rush a QB into service, don’t protect him, don’t develop him, and then make excuses and blame the QB. It’s the Browns organization people.

Ravens fan here. In the games against us…. I saw more problems with the Browns receivers (drops) and the Browns O-line, then Colt’s performance. It’s hard for one guy… to make a bad team play better. It takes 11 guys to make a team. IF ! the Browns trade him or dump him it would be a mistake.
There’s no story here except that Tony Grossi may have reinstated his twitter accoutn. McCoy just doesn’t have what it takes to be a starter in the AFC North. To small, and lacking arm strength.
Whether or not Colt McCoy is an NFL-caliber QB became irrelevant the moment he was drafted by the Browns. Cleveland is where QB careers go to die … often before they’ve even started.
