Browns to induct Clarence Scott and Ernie Green as ‘Browns Legends’
June 14, 2012Cavaliers Summer League Schedule Announced
June 14, 2012Mike Holmgren opened his press conference today saying that he is going to make a change to his philosophy this year. He vows to make himself more available to media and fans. He gave credit to Browns fans that he meets around town and certain unnamed members of the media for breaking through to him and convincing him he needs to talk more.
Holmgren did seem particularly concerned with some consequences of being more vocal and available. He says that he believes in Pat Shurmur and Tom Heckert, but is concerned that if he talks a bit more that fans and media might jump on some of the smaller inconsistencies if any seemingly conflicting quotes reveal themselves.
We’ll see how this manifests itself, I guess. Ideally it will put an end (or at least slow down) the conspiracies and steamrolling negativity over things like Peyton Hillis a year ago.
This is a change for Holmgren and the Browns. It is one that fans have been clamoring for. Let’s hope nobody regrets it.

If he had “stuck to his guns” and said that Heckert/Shurmur would be the mouth of the franchise, I’m sure some knuckleheads here would hoot/holler that they love his consistency, etc., and at the same time they would denounce these fans/media members as being pushy “know-it-alls” who shouldn’t tell Hehr Doktor Profesor Holmgren what to do.
Now that he is finally doing what SO many of us asked him to do SO many times over the past two years and admitting that it was the right move to make, I wonder if anyone here will give credit where its due, i.e., admit that his being silent all those months was a bad call by him and that fans clamoring for him to be more present/vocal were right all along.
And, if you can go that far, you might be willing to see this as an error; and thereby see him as capable of making major errors. And then you’re only a few blocks away from seeing some of his other decisions/hires as errors, too.
He’s already very available to the media…the Seattle media.
and some may wonder why he is worried that something he says may be taken out of context
I could care less if he talks or stays with his own personal doughnut eating contest on a daily basis. He is clueless about anything else other than teaching the west coast offense that Walsh taught him. Lerner hired him because he’s a big name and was unaware that seattle was sick of his inability to put a talented team on field except the one that he inherited. The only thing that Holmgren could do to contribute is to coach the team and him and dick jauron should be solid compliments to each other. People are clueless if they think talking helps. Quiet or more vocal who cares we just want results.
Heres an idea…. You make 50 Million dollars or so. You might have to talk in front of people. Especially the people who care about what you are doing.
What was ever taken out of context? He’s a man; you have to mean what you say. Be a man, Holmgren, and say what you want to say. If he disagrees with something a subordinate says than too bad. It may be a sign of trouble in the ranks but at least I’d have more respect for him.
This regime is such a joke. They disappoint so many people. If he has something to say, then say it.
mg, I don’t understand your implication here. Drawing logical conclusions based on what one says is not ridiculous. It’s called analysis. We’re all free to do it. If the analysis, based on facts, makes sense, then the shoe fits.
Personally, I don’t know why he didn’t personally thank you by name and make you a member of the coaching staff. I’d be pissed if I were you. Nevermind, you’re already pissed.
I should be happy, you’re right…oh wait, what do I have to be happy about again? They lost one more game last season? They have the ONLY first-year coach that didn’t win more games during the first season in 2012?
Please tell me why I should be happy?
Dont be happy.
let him be, these are Oribiasi’s OTAs. He’s getting loose for the season.
Oribiasi makes me miss Isis. There, I said it.
Sounds like Randy told Mike to quit hiding from the media and do what he’s paid to do.
wait … they never posted on the same thread .. you think maybe … naaaah.
you can’t spell “Oribiasi” without “Isis”…minus an S
Vic Rowen gets no respect!
also, 2005 was Holmgren’s 7th season with Seattle. Exactly how was that an “inherited” team?
The current Browns make me miss the Bill Belichek Browns.
There, I said it.
You must love 4-12 sooooooo much!
That just happened!
Wow man, focus. Focus on the team and sport at hand. I know its tough considering their record…
I thought he was dealing with business operations now what? Basically it sounds like Holmgren is trying to say don’t be surprised when he appears with the hose to put out any wildfires that arise. You know kinda like what he’s been failing at doing for the past two years despite supposedly dealing with just business operations.
I don’t think they’ll ever get this thing right.
yeeeah, the record isn’t the only distracting thing…
He took team to playoffs in first year he was hired(so inherited) and then fired as gm in 2002. So during his 3 year time as gm he must of been so impressive that they took it away from him. If you think Lerner is in touch with the real talent scouting/evaluating in the nfl look at his record for hiring people to bring us good players through the draft(because we never go after free agents). I just think we deserve more than some owner who knows less about football than I do. Please Lerner after Holmgren give me a shot for around 100k a year and you will get more results. Right now 100k is just Holmgrens doughnut budget for the year. So once again he is a decent coach but has no business running the team.
The fact that he’s changing the modus operandi doesn’t mean that SO many of you are SO annoying for caring about how much Holmgren talks to the public.
I don’t think you’ll ever think they’ll get it right so you’re probably right.
Proof is in the pudding man if you can’t recognize it that’s your problem. One day your blind following might be rewarded but I wouldn’t count on it. 1999+!
you’re right, stuff like handing off to Alex Smith and “not seeing” Colt McCoy get obliterated steal the stage.
Holmgren is not the GM of the Cleveland Browns. I am quite happy with Tom Heckert in that role. Thank you.
Also, key members of the Seattle SB team were vastly Holmgren’s picks/pickups on the offensive side and the new GMs on the defensive side of the ball:
Hasselbeck – brought in by GM Holmgren
Shaun Alexander – drafted by Holmgren
Darrell Jackson – drafted by Holmgren
Steve Hutchinson – drafted by Holmgren
Floyd Womack – drafted by Holmgren
Bobby Engram – signed by Holmgren (’01)
Walter Jones – inherited (drafted ’97)
Grant Wistrom – inherited (drafted ’98)
Rocky Benard – drafted by later GM (’02)
Marcus Trufant – drafted by later GM (’03)
Jordan Babineux – drafted by later GM (’04)
Michael Boulware – drafted by later GM (’04)
Lofa Tatupu – drafted by later GM (’05)
Joe Jurevicious – signed by later GM (’05)
You have way more time than I do to pull up useless things that prove nothing. The team he inherited was a playoff team with arguably one of the best offensive linemen of all time in Walter Jones. Any job other than coaching he has never done that well. You will prove nothing to me with Shaun Alexander because I know other than a small handful of rb’s the offensive line makes your rb as good as he is. Other than Hutchinson and Jones who he inherited there isn’t one person on the list I care about. Without those 2 o-linemen Alexander is average at best. So great you compiled a list of average players that proved nothing. Well done. I can tell you are someone that just spins their wheels and just doesn’t get it. Once again my original point that if he isn’t going to coach he is worthless to the browns. And gm’s hire coaches so Holmgren has influence with decisions by the browns. If you fired Shurmur tomorrow no one is hiring him except for a position coach. And if you think Heckert hired Shurmur that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. You must get your knowledge and logic of football from the Lerner school of football.
