While We’re Waiting…Indians Bullpen Improving, Assessing Tom Heckert’s Work, Slimmed Down Samardo Impressing
July 21, 2012NBA Trade Rumors And The Dan Gilbert Narrative
July 21, 2012A slew of 2012 top ten draft picks are coming to terms with their respective teams as training camp rapidly approaches, but The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot reports there’s still no movement on a deal for Trent Richardson. Both Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck inked their new rookie contracts this week, setting up the Richardson domino to fall shortly thereafter. Cabot reports that “offset language” appears to be the holdup in making Richardson official:
Offset language is believed to be the only real issue with Richardson’s contract, because the total amount of the deal and signing bonus are pretty well set under the new rookie slotting system. The contract will also be fully guaranteed.
[…]
The problem for the Browns is that neither Luck, the first overall pick, nor Griffin received offset language in their contracts. Offset language allows the team that drafted a player to save some money in the event the player is released and signs with another team while still owed money by his original team.
Under the new CBA, the money and duration for rookie deals have become near formalities, with slight increases from year to year. Richardson’s contract should be just over $20 million for four years.
Training camp is set to begin next Saturday in Berea.

Make him happy, he seems like a no bull worker, the kind that may be around his whole career, if they treat him right
the first year it was Manginis fault, the second year it was the lockouts fault, this year it will be because, despite their “best” efforts, they were unable to get their rookies into camp on time.
Good thing they’re not accepting or relying upon excuses.
Get it done. Especially Weeden. Or we waste a year of his limited window over an extra guaranteed contract year.
Not freaking out yet, but they have to get them to camp on time. The sky is not falling until camp starts. Hopefully by then this will be figured out.
Boys in Berea don’t seem to be in a hurry, even though the team was garbage last year.
Yeah this isn’t panic time yet…but if I see this article next Saturday I will start to be concerned.
Both as a player and a man, he is worth it. Just sign him already!
Weeden is already 45, we have no time to waste!!!
Weeden & Richardson should already be signed.
This is a critical year for the Browns to either re-engage their fan base, or begin to lose it altogether.
Play hardball with next year’s rookies; there won’t even be a 2nd rounder.
