NBA Summer League Box Score: Cavaliers 89, Suns 74

Welcome to the Summer League, Dion Waiters. Ok, there was still plenty to critique, but Dion Waiters displayed a set of impressive moves with dribble penetration as his 16 points help lead the Cavs Summer League team past the Phoenix Suns 89-74 in their third summer league game. Samardo Samuels turned in another strong performance with 17 points, including a perfect 9-0f-9 from the free throw line. Tyler Zeller posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards, while Donald Sloan added 13 points of his own. The Cavaliers next face the Minnesota Timberwolves Thursday night.

Waiters has serious ability. Man, he is a already a top-notch ball handler and to be honest, I think he’s a better natural passer than Kyrie. Reminds me of Wade including the suspect jump shot early in the career! Waiters splits double-teams in Price-like fashion. I did not think his handle was this good. Will make for an interesting backcourt as the PG or SG will change from possession to possession…

Still smiling over that and-1 late in the 4th….top of the key drive, spin move, lay-up…..mercy.

And Zeller 6 more offensive boards….can you imagine Andy and Zeller on the offensive boards? Feel free to shoot Waiters….make it, or reset the shot clock.

    Getting better, Waiters. :)

  • BrownsFanSF

boy, I don’t know if the scorers were just being tough or if Dion threw a bunch of passes that led to fouls, but after watching the game I felt like he had closer to 5-6 assists rather than two. His ability to pass and find guys has impressed me.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves now…..

  • TSR3000

    Tristan can offensive rebound, too.

  • mgbode

I’m prioritizing the Indians over summer league games, but good to hear that Waiters had a good game.

seems funny that a 5/15 could elicit such positive responses, but if he was setting up teammates and getting to the line, then I can see it being warranted.

  • Vindictive_Pat

There was more to like again last night. Zeller wasn’t shooting well, but made up for it with a ton of hustle plays. Waiters looked dangerous. He still can’t shoot, he can get to the paint just about any time he wants… the shots near the rim will start falling more often. The jump shot needs work. I like what Sloan is bringing… he’s a tenacious defender and I think he’d look really good as Waiters’ counterpart on the 2nd unit. No idea if the Cavs will use him as the Faux-6th Man a la James Harden, but I would like to see it… seems like it would really suit Waiters’ abilities and would give our 2nd unit a creative player.

  • eldaveablo

It’s amazing how much thinner Waiters looks when he plays well, hehe.

  • Bryan

Agreed. The main reason people are being tough on him is that he is shooting less than 30%. But given his shooting % in college, it seems clear that he is just in a mini-slump with his J. If a few J’s start dropping, he will be able to score 20 easily in these summer league games.

Also, once Kyrie is on the floor with him, it will be harder for the D to collapse on his drives. As long as both he and Kyrie can routinely hit spot-up jumpers, they will be a pretty dynamic duo offensively.

  • mgbode

I agree that could be the plan. But, then who is the starting SG?

  • Vindictive_Pat

Right now, it’s Boobie. He’s turned himself into a better defender and he can hit the 3, which seems to be the requirements for being the starting SG when a team has a Faux-6th Man. He’s always injured though and his injuries always affect his 3-point shooting. Ideally we’d have a player like Thabo Sefolosha or Danny Green to put there.

  • Brett

Waiters is a beast when he is attacking the basket. It looks almost easy for to get a layup around multiple defenders. BUT his 3 pt shot is awful. Right now since its Summer League I say go right ahead, but when it comes to the regular season he needs to put that on hold. That is definitely something to be worked on.
