NBA Trade Rumors: Marshon Brooks Could be Included in Deal with Nets
July 9, 2012Indians Weekend Wrapup: Heading Into the Break With a Thud
July 9, 2012While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.
Let me remind you that the biggest difference maker down the stretch for the playoffs last year was Doug Fister, a trade that barely made a ripple among deadline deals (in terms of attention), but made a huge impact in the AL Central race as he posted a 1.79 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP for the Tigers after he went from Seattle to Detroit. Most thought that Fister would slot in behind Verlander, Scherzer, and Porcello last year and that his real value was in the control that the Tigers would have over him (which is still true), but Fister was masterful once he got to Motown and his arrival played a HUGE part in the Tigers running away with the AL Central last year. So while big names may be out there and are certain to make an impact, the Indians should perhaps (after searching out that bat) try to find that Doug Fister-type player, whose acquisition may fly under-the-radar for some, but may be just what the Indians need in terms of strengthening and lengthening their rotation.” [Paul Cousineau]

Alonzo Gee is worth more as a free agent than Brook Lopez, Jason Terry, Jeremy Lin and Spencer Hawes. [Wages of Wins]

“They have said they don’t plan to be a factor in free agency, and that’s not likely to change. Their main concern is retaining Alonzo Gee, whose agent reportedly wants a “Landry Fields contract.” The Knicks guard received a 3-year, $19 million offer sheet from Toronto. Fields averaged 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the field, 25 percent on 3-pointers in 28 minutes a game.
Gee is a restricted free agent, and it’s possible someone could give him an offer sheet like that one. The Cavs have enormous cap room, and they can match it. Gee averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and shot 41 percent, 32 percent on 3-pointers in 29 minutes a game. The Cavs have limited wing players. The shooting guards are Dion Waiters and Daniel Gibson. Omri Casspi and Gee are the small forwards.” [Terry Pluto]

Regardless of what the Indians do in the trade market, the Detroit Tigers still come out on top. [The Big Lead]

“I think Justin Masterson is a man eater. He makes me swoon, then breaks my heart. Last night was no exception. After pitching at least six inning in 13 consecutive starts, Masterson was torched for eight earned runs and didn’t make it out of the fifth inning. His seasonal FIP is now back up to 3.89; about his career norm. I fell in love with Masterson last year due to the GB% and 150+ strikeouts. As a heavy ground ball pitcher, I understand that his BABIP will vary greatly, but last night wasn’t a case of a bunch of ground balls with eyes. He gave up a pair of long home runs, a very hard hit double and a long sac fly that scored a run. His SwStr% is fine, as is his overall BABIP. Perhaps he just is a 3.80 FIP pitcher. Useful, but certainly not what I was hoping (and banking) on for this year. I haven’t dropped him, but he’s going to get spot started from now on.” [FanGraphs]

And finally, The Ohio State University Buckeyes, if they were a drug. Mersh? [EDSBS]

Indians need and better make a move and I don’t mean something bland or ho-hum. Detroit is playing better and will pull the trigger yesterday if necessary meanwhile Chicago has already made a move and everyone knows Williams isn’t afraid to deal. Tick tock, tick tock Mark Antonetti.

Alonzo Gee needs to pack up his stuff and get on Twitter maybe then he’ll be the next “Pay da man” recipient. I wouldn’t mind this time however.
think it would be a major risk to pay Alonzo Gee that kind of money. He’s a slow-developing player who has proven willing to work, but when a guy goes from a 2-year/$1.4M contract to a 3-year/$19M, well, that’s a lot of guaranteed money and have trouble believing he will maintain the real effort working on his game that he must to be the kind of legit starting NBA forward such a salary implies.
