Indians Claim Fabio Martinez off of Waivers

The Cleveland Indians have announced their acquisition of right-handed pitcher Fabio Martinez off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

The 22-year-old Martinez spent the entire 2012 season with the Angel’s single-A affiliate Inland Empire. He went 0-5 with an ERA of 10.72 in eight starts (27 earned runs, 32 walks allowed, 23 strikeouts) with 22.2 innings pitched. He missed the entire 2011 season with arm problems despite entering the campaign as the Angels’ eighth-highest rated prospect per Baseball America.

A single-A player with injury problems and a 10.72 ERA? Jesus, we’ve finally hit rock bottom, haven’t we?

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Very aggressive, going for for the bodice ripper. Making our move for at least a wild card spot, Best Names On a Roster.
    (sigh)

  • Baggers Pants

nothing has made me believe more in the “what if?” campaign than this move

  • The_Real_Shamrock

C’mon people this was a move for the future, have some faith! LooooooooooooL sorry I tried to type that with a straight face I really did.

I hear Antonetti is looking at a former top prospect who had his pitching arm eaten off by a grizzly bear. Our farm system will coach him up though… no reason to think that he can’t pitch as well with his other arm if given time.

  • Harv 21

whew, that’s better, I thought Antonetti signed the bear.

    ………………….

  • Wow

He’ll fit right in with this team!

I get the sarcasm but this is a pretty solid move. Saw Martinez pitch last year in Low A Cedar Rapids. He was a top 10 Angels prospect coming into this season and coming off an injury. He’s a lot like a younger Esmil Rogers; electric stuff, blazing fastball and command issues. He’s been starter but the Indians will convert him into a reliever and some think he could be a lights-out closer. It’s a low risk move that could pay dividends down the road.

More like a 22 year old with a career ERA of 3.90 with a K rate of 12 per 9. Rock bottom? This isn’t rock bottom, this is smart. Do you want them to just give up trying to acquire talent FOR FREE??? You’re better than that.

  • Jaker

I can see the commercial now!… What If, A man named Fabio was just a terrible Single A pitcher?

  • SDA

If your putting a winning or at least competitive team out there that’s one thing. But in our situation we need solid prospects.

“Saw Martinez pitch last year in Low A Cedar Rapids.”

What the … Ok, if this is true (and no, do NOT want to know what in the name of all things holy you were doing there on the very day Fabio pitched), this is a venting session, Phil. Do NOT intrude with some pollyanna pre-injury report, before the bear ate his arm, or so help me I’ll Jason Knapp you one.

  • mgbode

Jason Knapp, Fabio Martinez. Hehe. We are putting together the greatest collection of “What If” prospects maybe to finish off that campaign?

  • mgbode

I think most realize that this is a solid move that all organizations do (take a flier on another org’s “once” prospect to see if he has anything left). I think that most also realize that this can’t be the ONLY type of move made.

  • http://www.cinpleweb.com/ stin4u

It isn’t for free, they will still be paying him. The thing that makes this a joke is that it isn’t a 2013 move or anything close to it. Just the FO browsing the flea market for some gently used tighty-whities as usual.
