MLB News: Hafner Placed on 15 Day DL; Donald Recalled

From the Indians-

“The Cleveland Indians today announced DH TRAVIS HAFNER has been placed on the 15-day Disabled List (retroactive to August 6) with lower back inflammation. To replace Hafner on the 25-man roster the Indians recalled INF JASON DONALD from Triple-A Columbus.

Hafner begins his second stint on the Major League DL this season and is hitting .239 (48-201) with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 11 home runs and 32 RBI in 60 games (.355OB/.453SLG/ .808OPS). He was previously on the Disabled List from May 24-July 4 after undergoing right knee surgery on May 31.

Donald begins his third stint with Cleveland after opening the season with the club and a brief two-game stint in early July (18G, .188AVG, 9-for-48). With Triple-A Columbus around those two stints he is hitting .277 (71-256) with 18 doubles, 3 triples, 6HR & 31RBI in 65 games (.365OB/.441SLG/.807OPS). Over his last 21 AAA games from July 14-August 7 he hit .341 (30-88) with 19 runs, 10 doubles, 4HR & 13 RBI in 21 games. With Columbus he has hit .317 (19-60) off left-handed pitching (.938OPS) and .318 (41-129) with runners on base. He has appeared in 33 games at short, 10 games at second, 7 at third and 17 games in the outfield (11LF, 6CF). Donald wears #16.”

Yep.

Can we just DFA this guy already and just get it over with? I’d rather eat my shoe than see them bring him back next year. We need to cut ties with the injury overpays (Hafner, sizemore)

  • mgbode

we need to just pay him proper value for a 125OPS+ for 90-100 games per year. I doubt we find a better hitter on the open market that we can afford.

  • JNeids

    :-O There’s my shocked face

  • Garry_Owen

    No thank you.

  • Garry_Owen

    Worth every penny.

  • matt underwood

no way – F him. we tried that with grady.

  • mgbode

which is a lazy argument. the last time Grady hit OPS+ above 120 was in 2008. also his last healthy season. his injuries have hurt his productivity. also, he has missed far more games.

    Grady
    year games-played OPS+
    09 106 110
    10 33 58
    11 71 96
    12 0 0

Now, Hafner’s injuries curtailed his ridiculousness and he’s not worth $13mil per year. However, he is still among our best hitters overall and plays ~100games/year.

    Pronk
    year games-played OPS+
    09 94 120
    10 118 130
    11 94 128
    12* 60 126

*out of 111. He’s on 15day DL right now, not the 60, so I suspect he’ll be back for some more games this year.

  • mgbode

I know, you think we should give his $13mil to Lou Marson :)

  • SoundChaser

To be fair, I think most of us were ok with this signing some years back. It’s sad to see a guy that is the “DH” can’t stay in the lineup for more than a couple of days. I will say this, they better not sign him for next year. Just sayin’

  • Garry_Owen

Well, some of that could certainly go toward Marson’s glove and throwing arm, but the rest should definitely go to a player (or players) that likewise owns a glove and is able to touch the ball with his hand at some point. No more millions for half-time bats!

  • Wow

    hahahahaha

  • Garry_Owen

What, precisely, has that OPS+ gotten us?

  • Harv 21

This has been my position as well. But I’m starting to falter, b/c his ailments are starting to accelerate and don’t think he will make 90-100 games any more at that level. I’d still take him, but not get in a bidding war with another org which isn’t as familiar with the trajectory of his boo-boos.

  • mgbode

not having a full season of Jose Lopez in the 4th slot? not having a hitter like Shelley Duncan DH for us? helped our offense be league average rather than terrible?

  • mgbode

no, no bidding war. we set a price that his rather reliable numbers and games are worth and do not go over it. and, only a 1year contract. if it’s $3mil, fine. $5mil is the upper, upper limit IMO.

  • Garry_Owen

    Cold comfort, indeed.
    No thank you.

  • mgbode

Kubel or Ross would have been a sound investment buy like that this past offseason. If you have faith our FO can find another such guy like those 2, then so be it.

  • Garry_Owen

Not to mention, that OPS+ has, in fact, brought us Lopez in the 4th slot, Duncan as DH, and a really bad offense.

  • Garry_Owen

Well, it’s notsomuch faith in the FO as it is absolute confidence that it’s the right thing to do.

  • mgbode

which is fine even if I do disagree. i just hate seeing a ton of people rail on Pronk when he is not anywhere near the top of the list of problems with the team (other than his contract, which is no longer a problem after this season).

  • mgbode

    no, cold comfort = beer

  • MoreGolfLessWork

For someone who doesn’t play in the field and doesn’t do much base running, he sure does get hurt a lot. I don’t get it..

  • Garry_Owen

See, that’s EXACTLY the problem, in my mind. As I said below, that contract is a huge, huge part of the reason that we have so many of the other problems and holes that we do. For every hit, HR, or RBI that we get from Hafner (which are way too few and far between for a guy that’s getting paid to only swing a bat), there’s a hit, HR, and RBI that we didn’t get from a scrub that’s filling in a position that should be occupied by a better talented player that we can’t afford.
We’ll never see eye to eye on this. You’re a Hafner fan. I’m not. Let’s just go back to killing our brains with beer.

  • The Astute Linguist

Might as well start using the DH spot to cycle through the young guys and see if we have lightning in a bottle. D the big lug FA.

  • mgbode

that is actually where we agree. his contract is an albatross. especially given the games he plays and the numbers he hits. for a mid-market team it does create holes elsewhere.

i made my peace with that and just appreciate him for what he is now. one of our better hitters whose bad contract ends this year.

    cheers on the beer glass.

  • Kildawg

Don’t think Hafner will be back. Tribe should do a flexible DH next year, and the ‘third catcher’ (e.g. Rottino) for Santana to safely DH. With Donald and Lillibridge, Cabrera can DH to give him some reprieve. Lillibridge might not have the best bat, but his defense and flexibility makes him a good option off the bench.

  • mgbode

    this just replaces a 125OPS+ w/ a 80OPS+ (Rottino/Donald/Lillibridge) in the lineup everyday.
i just fail to see how adding yet another terrible bat helps our offense. if we can get a guy like Kubel instead of Hafner, then I’m on-board. if we replace him w/ Lillibridge/Donald/Rottino in the lineup, then we’ll be even worse.

  • Cavs13

Why is this guy still on the team?
