Derek Lowe has pitched himself out of the Indians’ rotation and off the team. Following Wednesday night’s loss to the Royals, the Indians designated Lowe for assignment. Being called up to join the rotation is Corey Kluber.
Lowe started the season strong, but has had a brutal two months. Tuesday’s poor outing was apparently the last straw-
“Lowe — acquired in an offseason trade with the Braves — has gone 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA in 21 outings for the Indians this season. Since going 6-1 with a 2.05 ERA in his first eight turns of the year, Lowe has gone 2-9 with an 8.28 ERA, allowing 61 earned runs on 97 hits with 28 walks and 28 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings.”
It seems unlikely that a pitcher with Lowe’s career would accept a demotion to Columbus as opposed to retiring.
