September 5, 2012While We’re Waiting… Into the Eagles’ Nest
September 6, 2012WKYC is reporting that former Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell is hospitalized in a Baltimore hospital in deteriorating health.
Former Browns owner Art Modell is in a Baltimore area hospital where his condition is reportedly worsening.
Family members, including his sons John and David, are gathered with the 87-year-old Modell at the hospital.
Channel 3 Sports has learned Modell’s vital organs are failing.
Modell, you will recall, owned the Browns from 1961 until he moved the franchise to Baltimore following the 1995 season. He currently maintains a 1% share of the Ravens and is officially listed as a team consultant. While the Ravens captured Super Bowl XXXV and have been a perennial contender virtually since arriving in Baltimore, the Browns have made the playoffs once since their return to the NFL in 1999.
UPDATE 7:30 AM:Â Art Modell has passed away at age 87.

Do we really need the “Modell, you will recall…” part? Oh, THAT guy! Yes, yes, NOW I recall. Well, bon voyage. Glad you didn’t get in the Hall of Fame while you were upright.
Heart failure. Sounds about right….
DEAD!!!!!!
Too bad…
Don’t mean this to be insensitive…but if you believe in this sort of thing, then perhaps some type of “curse” against this new version of the Browns may be lifted this year…..maybe no more freak, devastating injuries to key players….no more crucial plays that decide the outcome of a game where we are left in disbelief thinking “why does this only happen to us?” – (I’m looking at you Dwayne Rudd, and you Ryan Pointbriand, and you Dennis Northcutt)….perhaps this is the beginning of a new day, where things start to break our way.
Again, if you believe in that sort of thing.
He’s been dead to me for 17 years.
Don’t forget about LeCharles Bentley. Local boy comes home only to suffer a career ending injury on the first play of his first practice. I was just talking the other day about the effect that had that almost always gets overlooked – if he doesn’t get injured, we don’t draft Alex Mack. Now hopefully we still wouldn’t have drafted Sanchez, but who knows who we would have drafted instead.
I was thinking the same thing this morning…
And Courtney Brown getting hit in the EYE with a penalty FLAG that the ref decided to load with BBs, detatching his retina and ruining his career…you can’t make this stuff up
Maybe Clay Matthews? Though knowing Mangini’s draft record, probably David Veikune a round earlier…
RIP Modell… May you never haunt Cleveland and her sports teams ever again or ever grace the Pro Football Hall of Fame (except for their Wall of Shame).
I think that was Orlando Brown. Courtney Brown had a whole different set of injury problems.
“Excellent work up there!”
Let’s keep it classy. The world is a better place without him. He was a liar and a thief. That’s as classy as I can keep it.
Relevant Ocean’s Thirteen exchange for the occasion:
“You think this is funny?”
“Well it sure as s%@# ain’t sad!”
That is a great way of putting it.
Yep it was Orlando… I don’t remember him being a particularly good player, either.
so the refs won’t look at replay after the next play is run anymore?
we won’t lose a tiebreaker for a wildcard spot because the Colts gifted their divisional rival the last game?
we will have a RB last more than 2 seasons as a starter?
we will have a QB last more than 2 seasons as a starter?
i’m just glad the man that chased Paul Brown, Jim Brown and eventually the Browns themselves out of Cleveland never got to see himself inducted into the HOF.
A shame how it happened too. The hospital wanted to get a new bed and relocate it to the new hospital wing where they could get a better financial package for it, but Art was happy with his current bed in its current location. So without any concern for the person in the bed, the hospital moved the bed, the doctors and the nurses to this new wing of the hospital leaving Art no medical care. A shame when you count on something for so long and then its just taken from you like that.
Love this.
I’ll admit I was a bit nervous to read these comments but well done so far guys. Nothing too over the top, At least he doesn’t have to get boo’d at his HOF induction now. Toodles Art.
This is an amazing day… I woke up on the beach checked my phone and Art Modell was dead. The only sad part is that I can no longer look forward to him dying.
We will stop wasting 2nd round picks on crappy WRs?
Let’s hope David never gets to see it either.
What about the Jacksonvile game? Nobody ever lost like that before & never will again.
How do you go back two plays & review?!?!!?? Damn…
Unless they’re Buckeyes then all aboard!!!!!
The real question is, Will the Browns ask for a moment of silence on Sunday for Art?
See the comment directly above you.
I am about to promote a Facebook page that is not mine. I have no stake in this page other than the fact that I am a staunch supporter of its message and believe it could have a meaningful impact should the need arise…it is called “Keep Art Modell out of the Hall of Fame”
There is power in numbers. Please like this page. Don’t let ESPN re-write history and get him elected posthumously.
?
only if they have Steve Everett ask for the moment wearing a Ravens jersey which he proceeds to rip off revealing a Browns jersey underneath and he does the ‘X’ over his groin gesture with accompanying slogan 🙂
Cheers to that.
Maybe we WON’T have a guy tear his Achilles in the early stages of training camp (Hodges last year, Gocong this year). Hopefully we won’t constantly lose to division anymore. (Then again, 6-0 in your division doesn’t guarantee playoffs example being the Oakland Raiders circa 2010)
Then have Ozzie do a run-in and bash Everett with a steel folding chair.
does that mean we also won’t have a guy tear both of his ACLs (Baxter) or both pectorals in different years leaving him on IR each year (DQ)?
and that staph infection is a thing of the past along with the phrase “enlarged testicular region”?
hey now, we’re talking about fortunes here. you cannot fix stupid.
Being Cleveland sports fans we’re suppose to be special, strong enough to withstand adverse conditions no matter what those conditions may be and handle them with class. Let’s leave the negative in the past and move to a positive future. Like the rest of the Cleveland fans across the country I was vivid with Art and then Lebron, but then a man on the news giving his opinion on Lebron stated “If you want to be forgiven you must forgive” Now that’s a classy Cleveland fan. Condolences to the Modell family.
As DeeP said earlier, hopefully a great chunk of the freak injuries and utter bonehead plays leave our team and start happening to other teams like Baltimore, Cincinnati, and especially Pittsburgh. Only mentioned the latest in freak injuries above.
You’re funny Stick.. Nice pic too
