October 9, 2012Cleveland Browns: On the Bright Side
October 9, 2012Though signing what is reported to be a four-year contract with the Cleveland Indians, recently hired manager Terry Francona reportedly has an ‘out” clause that would allow him to leave the team in the event that team president Mark Shapiro and general manager Chris Antonetti are relieved of their duties.
Per ESPN’s Buster Olney:
Terry Francona has out clauses in his contract in the event that the people he works for are dismissed.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) October 8, 2012
Francona, during his introductory press conference, repeatedly stated that Shaprio and Antonetti — two men with which he forged a friendhship during his previous stint with the team — were two of the biggest reasons for his accepting of the job. As Olney penned earlier in the day, before his interview, Francona sent the Indians a 16-page breakdown of their team, their organization and what he sees in their future.
The team would not comment on Olney’s “out clause” report.

I have a bad feeling about this.
It’s a trap!!!
Can we see this 16 page breakdown? It almost feels like a back to the future newspaper
I’d get it out now if I were him… there is no way this ends well.
Shapiro and Antonetti getting fired would give me incentive to stay, not leave, the job.
So Francona is Lando?
Well, if Shapiro is Emperor Palpatine and Antonetti is Darth Vader (and come on, they are, aren’t they?), then I’m afraid Francona might be Grand Moff Tarkin. Let’s just say that I think the Dark Side is strong in all of this.
I’d be thrilled if he was Lando. Hell, I’d even be happy if he was . . . Porkins.
(Is my immature Star Wars obsession showing? I’ll try to be more modest in the future.)
Great, four more years of these clowns.
He can’t be Porkins. I was saying Lando because he’s pretending to be with the bad guys but he’s gonna come through & get us what we really want.. Which is our asses out of purgatory. But… you’re probably right. I’d hate to say he’s Tarkin, but I think that could fit really well. All this time we were lead to believe that New York is the evil empire.
How about a Wild CArd Division(s). Low attendance, low budget teams can compete for a one game wild card game after 120 or so games amongst themselves. A shortened season for the Tribe, Royals, Rays, As, Pirates, Mariners, Twins … Maybe they can play some Japanese and south of the border teams or all-star crews too.
If he was Lando, and he was working with the Empire, then I’d say that makes the fanbase Han Solo, because we’ll be frozen in anger.
I’m actually, surprisingly, OK with this. Stability in the team’s regime hopefully can’t hurt. I mean, could things get much worse?
see Pirates, Pittsburgh
This has got to be a misprint. Surely the opt out clause should be if Shapiro and Antonetti stay, then he can leave. After all, they are 2/3 of the Indians problems, the other being Dolan.
I think they need to get John Hart back in the organization.
please, no.
Wise this one is, yes, umm.
This started one of the funniest comment strings I have read in awhile. Well done.
Well, I like the way you’re thinking. Lando it is (let’s hope).
You are referencing Star Wars? Really? Bottom line, this team will blow as long as our Grandpa owner keeps buying us socks for Christmas rather than XBOX games and new cars. Dolan is sitting at home right now eating tapioca pudding and reviewing his phone bills long distance charges. This guy is a joke and too conservative to own this team. I’m sick of hearing about “Cleveland’s market”. Sack up and throw around some more coin moron. The return will be great in all aspects..
