Jimmy Haslam places full-page ads with letter to Browns fans
October 17, 2012The Ohio State Perspective
October 17, 2012The Browns introduced new CEO Joe Banner to Cleveland today at a press conference in Berea. The highlight of his comments?-
“You need to fill the organization with the best people in the business if you want to be the best in the business.”
Both Banner and Haslam stressed that the team will not look to make any more personnel moves until after the season is over. Banner said they are committed to supporting the team this season and helping head coach Pat Shurmur and the team anyway that they can.

Someone needs to take that trite quote and make a motivation poster with the cast of The Office
Let the speculation begin. Andy Reid? Jon Gruden? Bill Cowher? Eric Mangini Part 2??
mgbode 🙂
Let the speculation end. No. No. No. And, no.
No, maybe, YES and God no.
Maybe, just maybe, Haslam has a good connection to Cowher through the Steelers, and maybe – MAYBE – Cowher still has the fire and drive to be an NFL head coach after sitting at the anaylist table with all of those chowderheads for years. I don’t know. Seems like quite a gamble. There is much more at play here than just the name “Bill Cowher” ensuring success for the Browns.
As for Gruden getting a “maybe”: On what basis? Don’t get lured by the “big name.”
It’s form over substance.
All this folderol is starting to distract from the traditional focus of Browns fans in October, next year’s draft. These guys really need to chill, I can barely concentrate.
It will be Nick Saban.
Obviously you’re joking but in all honestly I don’t want a retread, even one with a past history of success. I want the Browns to be ahead of the curve and get someone like John Harbaugh or Mike Smith who is a first time head coach but who is ready to make that leap, and then will be a long term answer for the Browns.
Hey Nick, do you want to leave being the premier college HC where recruits are flocking to your program and you get to just reload each year? As a benefit, you will get to take over the team with the most turmoil and worst record from the past 13 years.
Nick? Dang cell phone must have disconnected.
How about Tony Dungy THEN Gruden, that worked before.
Ha! Well, that is the only formula with “Gruden” as an ingredient that has proven to work.

uh oh…
from Gruden’s wikipedia page, so you know it must be true:
The Grudens now live in Tennessee near Knoxville
and from Haslam’s wikipedia page:
Haslam, who lives in his native Knoxville, Tennessee
Just watched today’s Banner/Haslam presser and glad I did
I’m as suspicious as anyone about the natural honeymoon reaction when the new guys come in. Yesterday was a little queasy that Haslam-Bonner seemed like a shotgun marriage, with possible clashes ahead. After watching them sit and speak together I’ve never had such a strong feeling that a Cleve sports team is about to head in the right direction, and quickly.
– Understand why Holms absolutely must leave now, ready or not. Banner is a total Alpha in the best sense: take no crap, smart, controlled, well-thought plan already percolating, demanding of himself and others. There’s not enough oxygen in any size room for the two of them.
– Banner-Haslam seem like BFFs already, happy to finish each other’s sentences and bang helmets.
– Total focus from the top is here, and there won’t be any wasted years seeing if a current coach might grow. Believe the players will feel the white hot attention immediately. Better buy some stick’um, Mr. Little.
Watch this presser. Feels like a fabulous, no excuses/no prisoners culture change just swept into Berea. I’m totally stoked.
Stop yelling, I’m here. Yep, you win some college championships and now these idiots think I’m a disappointment if it’s not every year. But the NFL remembers me as a loser even though I was a great d-coordinator there. You know, I’m just in my 50s and think I’l give it a second shot, like Pete Carroll. If it works I’ll be known as one of history’s great coaches. If not, I’ll pick the best college program and come back.
Maybe Haslam sneaks into Ozzie’s bedroom while he’s sleeping and whispers, “He’s dead … Art’s dead ….Your debt is repaid … Return to Cleveland and atone for him….”
That would explain why he’s wearing the same tie today as yesterday. Man didn’t sleep. This guy is a PR boon!!!!
Nick? Hey, it’s Gene. Fine, fine. Vest sales are down, but all in all it’s going well. Yourself? Listen, E. Gordon and I were just talking. Yeah, between you and me, those bow ties are just plain silly – but they deflect from what comes out of his mouth. Anyway, we’re almost certainly going to need a new head coach in about 5 years. So, um, I guess what I’d like to know is, um, how hard do you plan to work up there in Cleveland? Because, we were just thinking, that if, you know, for whatever reason, it doesn’t work out up there in Cleveland, maybe we could find a spot for you down here. So, yeah, anyway, go Browns, but, again, don’t work too hard.
Very funny, Gene, especially from the guy who told me I work hard drinking water from the fountain. What’ya mean… I’m not yelling, this is how I talk … yeah, well dare you to say that to Urban – I saw him on the sideline on tv and he looks like you couldn’t pull a potato chip out of his rear with a tractor.
It is my superbowl.
In related news, Joe Banner was just promoted from Lieutenant Obvious to Captain. Congratulations, Joe!
Okay, okay.
Say, do you have Les’s number?
They probably already have that.
in fairness, if you watch the presser you’ll see that he was forced to utter such inanities by genius sports reporters trying to ask him 30,000 ways who he intended to fire. “Ok, well, do you think your history with Shurmur might influence your decision? Do you like his eyes? Have you met his wife?”
Ah, who needs context? Doesn’t help advance my narrative.
I am liking this based on the sole fact that you used the word ‘percolating’ in a comment on a sports article. Well done, sir.
if you like that, then you should just “follow” Harv. his comments are generally beautiful pieces of literature
