Fox Sports Ohio’s Sam Amico has a report from yesterday’s latest at Cavaliers training camp, and within his five key observations, he shares this big nugget first:
1. Dion Waiters is in shape.
That seemed to be the concern among most fans, and they can stop worrying. His conditioning is no longer an issue.
It’s too early to tell how good Waiters will be right away, but here’s what we think we know: He’s a streaky shooter from the perimeter, he can get to the basket practically at will, and as coach Byron Scott said, “he can go over the top” of defenders once there. Overall, he’s looking pretty good.
From the very early looks of things, Waiters could be one of those guys who spends his rookie season scoring 20 points one game and three the next. That makes him not much different than a lot of top 10 picks.
Obviously, Waiters’ conditioning was a major talking point for Cavaliers fans during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas back in July. Back then, our very own Andrew was writing almost daily articles sharing his opinion and calming fans’ nerves about the early struggles of the team’s new star rookie.
Then, with media day and training camp approaching, pictures and rumors starting emerging of Waiters’ supposed improved shape. We’ll see shortly, when the Cavs host their first public scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 12, if it looks the Syracuse product is more comfortable and in control out on the court.
