The Pitch To Swish
December 19, 2012Is There Any Hope Beneath the Frustration for the Cavaliers?
December 19, 2012Greg Bedard is at it again. The Boston Globe reporter who set the Internet ablaze with his sourced report regarding the possibility of Nick Saban joining Mike Lombardi in Cleveland has shifted gears.
In his latest, putting together a mosaic of items from ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi and the Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot, Bedard reports that if Josh McDaniels is in fact the next head coach of the Browns, that the team would then trade for Patriots reserve quarterback Ryan Mallett.
“A Banner-Lombardi-McDaniels trio, McDaniels being a born-and-bred Ohioan, and a chance to rebuild where the Bill Belichick tree was first planted, would be factors that would likely get a blessing from Belichick,” writes Bedard. “One more log to throw on the fire: those two initial sources said that if Lombardi and McDaniels indeed team up in Cleveland, the chances are good that they will attempt to trade for Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett and install him as the franchise quarterback. Brandon Weeden would be out, or in a backup role.”
The 6-foot-6-inch Mallett has not been provided the opportunity to play much since being acquired two seasons ago. The strong-armed quarterback outplayed former Patriots back-up Brian Hoyer in the four exhibition games in 2012, completing a higher percentage of passes, for more yards, more touchdowns, and a better rating.
The Browns recently used a 22nd-overall selection on Weeden who, in his rookie season, has amassed a passer rating of 72.4. He has completed 57 percent of his passes for 3,281 yards with 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

This is getting ridiculous. Who could possibly know that all these guys would get hired and then whom they would in turn want to trade for? Is your source Pythia?
God no. The last thing I need is another ex-Wolverine in Cleveland like Braylon or an ex-Razorback like Hillis
I might be in the minority but I liked Mallett alot out of Arkansas. The fact that he’s sat 2 years behind Brady in New Englad shouldn’t be viewed as a negative but a positive IMO. If the idea above is true at least Mallett would be in a system under a coach he’s very familiar with which given what has happened the last 13 years here would be refreshing. The other positive would be not drafting another rookie QB but I don’t know.
Sorry but this makes no sense given the sad state of affairs in Berea you should welcome just about anyone who could help this sorry team.
well, Banner worked with Lombardi for one year who is desperate to find another NFL FO job, so he’s utilizing his agent Sexton to put out rumors that he’s interested based on that loose connection. also, since Sexton represents Saban, he was able to loosely piece together that rumor until Saban defiantly killed it because he wants no part of any connection to a hack like Lombardi. So, instead, Lombardi has to connect himself back to the Belichick tree from the early 90’s and McDaniel’s name has come up for other openings making him the logical candidate for the rumor despite doing worse with the St.Louis offense than Shurmur had done. And, Ryan Mallett is the backup QB in NE where McDaniel’s currently is OC, so it makes it the logical conclusion that he would want to bring him too based on his 0 NFL pass attempts and 8 kneeldowns in 2 seasons.
Oh, and Ryan Mallet once met Kevin Bacon (6 degrees, whew!).
let us not forget that taking a HC from the Belichick tree also would likely mean disgarding the currently assembled DL for the 4-3 and installing a 3-4 defense.
Has any of Bill’s disciples done anything as HC other than get fired after embarrassing tenures and/or make Donato’s Pizza commercials?
McDaniel’s managed to take Tim Tebow in the 1st round, which setup an embarrassing Steeler playoff loss, so he has that going for him, which is nice (of course, the team had to be coached by John Fox in order for them to make the playoffs).
Why don’t the Browns just trade for Tebow if they are bringing in McDaniels?
You’re in the minority. Mallett had terrible footwork and decision making, especially under pressure, while at Arkansas. I’d rather watch Weeden continue to develop.
Can we give them back LeCharles Bentley for Mallet? That and the credit they owe us for Donte Stallworth should cover it.
As an offensive guy, hiring McDaniels probably wouldn’t automatically mean the 3-4 defense is a given… I mean, there are plenty of other reasons not to hire him, but I would imagine he’d focus on offensive and hire a defensive mind to do what they wanted on that side of the ball.
He would also cost a fortune, say goodbye to second rounders
Well, I heard that we’re actually going to get Tom Brady. Or Aaron Rodgers. Can’t remember which, but I can manufacture a tenuous reason why both would work. That’s it, we’re getting both! And Colin Humperdink, or whatever that guy’s name is – and Jim Harbaugh is coming with him. Or was it John? Both, maybe. Oh, and did I mention that I knew RG3 when he was a kid? Looks like I’m going to be the new GM of the Redskins! Woo hoo!!
WHEN DOES RYAN MALLET COME OUT IN THE DRAFT? WE SHOULD TAKE HIM.
Josh Gordon already said goodbye to this year’s second rounder
Beat me to it but as far as your previous response to me about Mallett like I said being behind Brady with a team the calibre of the Patriots should have only benefited Mallett. Would something like this be a risk? Of course but it would be hard for anyone to do worse at the QB spot then this organization has since 1999.
All this aside if Weeden was somehow able to survive and remain the starter I wouldn’t mind seeing what some real coaching could do for him. Much like a year ago when I preferred seeing McCoy remain the starter with improvements around him.
Comment of the Day
I disagree it’s clear Clive Owen got into my secret stash of Kool-Aid! 😉
No, THIS is the Comment of the Day. Much love for old school WFNY memes.
Clive Owen can’t hold a candle to my striking good looks.
At the very least some actual QB competition would be good to see if Weeden can improve
Greg Bedard is a twit, a hack and pulls his “headlines” straight out of his backside.
Shut the internet off. You win
Sooooo IF Banner fires Heckert, he MAY hire Lombardi. IF he hires Lombardi, he MAY hire McDaniels. IF Heckert is fired and Lomabardi is hired and Lombardi hires McDaniels, then McDaniels MAY trade for Ryan Mallett?? I love Decembers as a Browns fan…. :/
Hee HEEEE!
I just hope we can draft Jake Locker this year :/
Bring in the family arm.
you’re not alone. After the draft last April I wondered if we could have gotten Mallet for less than the #22 pick, and if he would/could be better than Weeden, due to his youth and the possibility he may have matured a bit after being in the Patriots system for a year. But, it’s easy for me to theorize. Much different story when a team is doing it for realzies.
It’s a notion worth considering, but there would need to be a lot of research. Which, if Josh McD is involved, would represent a lot of that “research” through firsthand knowledge, I guess. I know for a fact he was a handful at Michigan, but he was a freshman, and that was a while ago, so that likely is a phase he is past. I know I did some reeeeeeally dumb stuff my freshman year, and I have the scars to prove it.
Every time Bill Belichik lets an assistant or player go though, I worry. There aren’t many of those decisions that have proven to be incorrect over the years. Richard Seymour is closest, I suppose.
there’s a difference between “Browns fans” and “Buckeye fans who root for the Browns”
I’m all about winning though so I could care less what college a professional athlete attended. That’s for collegiate days, I’m 40 now, I wear big boy pants! 😉
Another fan-favorite marginal quarterback what can go wrong there
Ha, exactly. Speculation on speculation on speculation on speculation. Sheesh.
I thought Mallet was the best QB in that class… but hey I am just a guy watching football on tv.
“I know I did some reeeeeeally dumb stuff my freshman year”
Like going to Michigan?
I kid! I kid!
For the people who love physical attributes such as size and arm strength Mallett is a wet dream now whether he has what it takes upstairs is another question. I as well only watch so I’m no QB guru a la Mike Homgren or some of the people on here too.
Holy crap that is well said. I am a huge Michigan fan and am sick of OSU fans bitching about U of M players on the Browns. I guess they would not want Chuck Woodson, Tom Brady, etc.
This whole thing is idiotic…. but I’m just a Browns fan, what do I know.
The_Real_Shamrock = Mike Gundy?
So Lombardi and his agents made sure that his bosses at the NFL network showed him in that awesome Bill Cosby like sweater in Browns 95 to remind the world that he was part of the brains that put together the superbowl champion Ravens?
I am a big Razorback fan and think that Mallet has all the talent in the world but leadership and maturity has been a question, maybe a couple of seasons riding the pine behind Brady has done him some good, then again there is Matt Cassel.
LOL +1. I wish. I got in. Too poor to go. Went to BG instead
FAT!
(I know, no one likes Jim Rome, but it makes me laugh every time I think about it)
Oh, screw it, I’m gonna go become a Panthers fan. Or maybe a Titans fan. There are 31 other teams in the NFL, each of which is better run and has a better chance of having a winning season eventually. Heck, the Raiders have better management now.
…wrapped in bacon…
This sounds so much like what the Chiefs did when they hired Pioli and sign Caseell after his one good season. We saw how that worked out.
He threw an interception against the Texans. Just saying 😉
If this means a first round pick then no thanks.
mmmmmmmmmmmmm…….bacon…….
bye!
Cleveland:
Where head coaches get two years & players get one to prove themselves. Absolutely pathetic.
