WFNY Podcast – 2013-01-06 – Brian Spaeth challenges Craig on Browns and media
January 7, 2013WFNY Roundtable: The Chip Kelly debacle and the ongoing search for a Browns head coach
January 7, 2013ESPNCleveland’s Tony Grossi reports that the Browns are in Chicago today to interview CFL head coach Marc Trestman. Trestman is currently the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes. Heading into this off-season, I never thought for a second I would type the name of a CFL team.
Trestman’s resume is full of experience. He’s coached football at a high level since 1981 as the QB coach at the University of Miami. Stops in Minnesota and Tampa preceded time in Cleveland in 1988 and 89 as QB coach and offensive coordinator for the Browns. The Alouettes were his first head coaching gig and he’s been there since 2008 including back-to-back Grey Cup Championships in 2009 and 2010.
Trestman is reportedly in Chicago to also visit with the Bears who fired Lovie Smith.

My initial reaction is one of skepticism, but let’s see what he’s got to offer.
BTW, I wonder at what point over the weekend Haslam and Banner looked at each other with the realization that Kelly is just stringing them along.
If I’m Haslem, I’m flying down to New Orleans right now with a contract for $50 million over 5 years to hand to Nick Saban as soon as tonight’s game is over.
I hope if you’re Haslam and you want to hand over that huge contract, you at least know to fly to Miami where the game is being played….I kid. I don’t know who I want as the coach….just give me somebody with a little fire in their belly and isn’t afraid to make decisions and stand by them.
Laughed out loud when I saw his candidacy, the thought that this is Haslam’s brave new world. Trestman was the controversial and failed young replacement for the brilliant OC Lindy Infante … 20+ years ago! Poor Bernie went from Infante and bff Gary Danielson in his ear to financial planner Trestman and Nick Nolte, er, Don Strock with a drink in his hand. (Kidding about Strock, he was emergency signing only).
“OK Mr. Trestman, this Hot Tub seems to be good as new.”
Haha getting myself confused with the Super Bowl. Already getting myself excited for next season I guess.
If Saban wins tonight, I think he’d jump. The big question is whether or not he’s the right hire at this point. PR wise, it would be a coup, but I could care a less about PR.
As far as Trestman goes, people learn from mistakes, and I’d hate to hang a guy for something 20 years ago when he was 33 years old. I think Trestman would be a good choice, but we’ll see. The big watch will be the assistant coaches…and if you bring in Trestman, you could afford to bring in some outstanding assistant head coaches…
maybe when their dinner-time calls Saturday kept rolling over to voicemail, Kelly’s agent kept saying, “Everything’s fine, gotta put you on hold for a sec”, and Haslam’s forehead vein was visibly throbbing as the wait staff refilled his ice tea for the third time.
I wonder how long before Haslam and Luria are comfortable enough to tease each other about Kelly.
Think of all the plays he can run with that extra down in the NFL.
Ugh. Not that I have an opinion on the guy but I already hear about our “old” rookie quarterback. And that we needed a Steelers owner to help us out. I’m not sure I could take a CFL coach on top of it all.
and regardless of what was then he is a guy who bounced around the NFL never staying more than 2yrs at any location before taking his talents to Canada.
How about f*** no?
Malcolm Glazer keeps calling just to laugh
I’m willing to bet that in between calls Haslam was complaining about the inability to get a decent glass of sweet tea in Arizona or northeast Ohio.
So is this more “Smoke and Mirrors” or “Where there’s Smoke there’s Fire”?
So counting Trestman that makes 9 interviews so far, right?
By which I mean:
1) Are we just delaying everybody while waiting for a college or NFL coach who is still playing?
or
2) Are we trying to get cute and out-smart everybody?
By the looks of Kelly, he wanted to wait until after dessert to make a decision, then the fourth meal, then he said brunch the next day….soooo hungry
overridden by field width shrinkage?
That’s what I was thinking. Would his offense work on the tiny NFL 100 yard fields?
Could be both but I’m not sure why everyone is in such a hurry. I would think the fact the Browns are talking with so many different prospective head coaches that it would be a good thing not bad.
Even if he was our OC in the late 80s? He obviously knows Cleveland and could convince his old QB (Bernie Kosar) to be the QB coach… (and should keep Jauron as DC)
I am confused why Whisenhunt isn’t getting more publicity. When he was originally on the market like 5-6 years ago he was touted as a smart, promising, young, hard-working guy. He then turned around Arizona and went to the Super Bowl. His last two years have been weak, but he had absolutely atrocious QB play. To me, he seems like a clear upgrade over Shurmur at worst, and a big-time steal at best.
As for Saban, I am curious to see if anything heats up there. My guess is it won’t, but I think Haslam should try.
I’d really like to know if they fly down to Miami this afternoon. That should be an easy thing to find out, shouldn’t it?
I think Haslam owns a private plane and getting that type of itinerary (if flown out of a private airport) is harder to get. Usually, when that stuff is “leaked” it is done on purpose.
What? No good coaching candidates in the Lingerie League?
And now Tony Grossi is backtracking as others (like the AP’s Tom Withers) state there’s no interview scheduled with Trestman at this time.
Tony Grossi
@TonyGrossi
A clarification: #Browns interview with Marc Trestman will come at a later date. http://espncleveland.com/common/more.php?m=49&post_id=10461 …
or the media is wrong again!
poor Grossi.
You mean he doesn’t fly coach?
Or it was “speculated” and all the other journalists stealing the story assume it was leaked.
Bob Golic…
And now in the article it says “a meeting with the Browns has not been finalized.”
Also, has nobody noticed at the end of the article it says they plan to interview Bruce Arians? I’d think that’d warrant a headline.
@REEPJP:disqus got jokes, kid!
Did you hear: they’re interviewing Bill Walsh!
There’s a gleam, men.
go and get the man jeremy mincey we sit to long and then thay are gone thats what we do lets get moving
Fly coach? He can’t even hire one!
ha!
