NFL News: Bengals DC Mike Zimmer to interview with Browns

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer is reporting this morning that the Browns will be interviewing Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer today for their head coaching position.

The Bengals ranked sixth in total defense this season in yards allowed and eighth in points allowed per game. They finished 10-6 and were eliminated from the playoffs last week by the Texans. They won seven of their final eight regular season games.

Coming from the Bengals, Zimmer would no doubt be happy not to be making minimum wage anymore.

The problem with all the speculation about Ariens and Lovie is that Haslam is looking for a younger guy who will be around here for 10 years or so.

Are we cold on the Bengals OC?

  • Shadow_play

Lovie is young, No? (I suppose I can Google)

  • MrCleaveland

I think he’s 54, which I guess would put him right on the edge.

  • cleveland__rocks

    Well Zimmer is 56…

  • Harv 21

Perfect. They take a Paul Brown from us, we take a Zimmer from them.

  • Harv 21

so then Trestman has aged out?

  • mgbode

already interviewing a CFL HC. don’t need to interview an Arena League lifer too.

  • mgbode

Paul Brown + Mike Brown = Zimmer (as Mike is a negative)

  • Natedawg86

They didn’t take Paul Brown from us. Ratbird Modell fired him. Fire the guy that your team is named after…

  • MrCleaveland

Look, if you guys expect me to base my bloviations on actual facts, then I’m afraid I’ll just have to quit guessing and actually look stuff up. Thanks a lot.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Glad to hear this one he’s worth an interview.

  • cleveland__rocks

And there is like no competition for him right now.

  • mgbode

I say Haslam doesn’t let Zimmer leave Berea.

  • Harv 21

    Thanks, Gilligan.

My reliance on your accuracy had been based on your past history, but …

Don’t give in. Baseless opinion is what has driven Cleveland sports fans for 50 years. Indeed, it is our lifeline.

JON GRUDINS IS ONLY, LIKE 38 OR SOMETING.

    Professor.

I don’t know enough to have a solid opinion about Zimmer, but in general I’m not excited about a defense-minded HC. I’d prefer Trestman or Whisenhunt as HC with Jauron staying on and running his aggressive, successful 4-3.

  • mgbode

    Jauron runs an “aggressive” 4-3?

  • SDA

he looked it up so it must be a fact. Any word on the Cowher thing Harv?
(I think we need more rumors)

  • mgbode

Chud’s in town. I’m sort of on the fence with him (he has good and bad traits), but he is a lifelong Brown’s fan, has ties to the team, and shown the ability to coach a traditional offense as well as a new-school spread based on the talent available.

  • mgbode

Bill Walsh for HC and Al Davis for GM

  • SDA

oh heck I heard a rumor (from my wife a very reliable source who may know something about something sports related) That Ozzy was comin to town

  • mgbode

    on a crazy train?

  • SDA

that’s what I heard . You heard it too? must be true then

  • crobarred

I’m glad Zimmer is getting a call. He’s a good DC and his players buy into his system. The young defense for the Browns would benefit from a guy like Zimmer. Also think the offensive guys would benefit from his coaching style. I’m a fan of Arians as well so either would work for me. Now someone sign Phil Dawson to a max deal!

  • FearTheRoo

I would be okay with this, but we need to keep the 4-3. We’ve seen the 3-4 fail too many times.
