While We’re Waiting… Chip Kelly Mania
January 5, 2013NFL Report: Browns ‘very impressed’ in interview with Doug Marrone
January 5, 2013Again, amid all of the coaching rumors, the Browns have been abuzz on Twitter for other topics too in the last 48 hours. This one was big last night, as ESPN Cleveland reporter Will Burge shared some insight on Colt McCoy’s potential future with the organization:
Source in #Browns organization told me that just over a week ago Colt McCoy was told by Joe Banner he is "in the next head coach's plans"
— Will Burge (@WillBurge) January 4, 2013
To clarify, I never reported McCoy was "the guy" w the next head coach just that he is "in the plans" Will most likely get chance to compete
— Will Burge (@WillBurge) January 5, 2013
This also would tie into Brandon Weeden’s comments from last week about his apparent dislike for operating potential coach Chip Kelly’s spread offense. (Notably, Weeden tweeted last night he was kidding about that earlier statement.) So while McCoy might not necessarily be the immediate starter, it’s likely his mobility doesn’t hurt his candidacy.
Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk later responded to Burge’s report with some additional intel on McCoy and Kelly, who are both represented by the same agent. Florio said this is “possibly no coincidence” and likely just “a harmless effort to create interest in a quarterback.”
