On the Cavaliers and the Prospects of a Failed Rebuilding Process
January 8, 2013Anderson Varejao remains out; will not play Wednesday
January 8, 2013“How many times do you think I’ve been asked to put it to rest? And I’ve put it to rest, and you continue to ask it. So I’m going to say it today, that — you know, I think somewhere along the line you’ve got to choose. You learn a lot from the experiences of what you’ve done in the past. I came to the Miami Dolphins, what, eight years ago for the best owner, the best person that I’ve ever had the opportunity to work for. And in the two years that I was here, had a very, very difficult time thinking that I could impact the organization in the way that I wanted to or the way that I was able to in college, and it was very difficult for me. This is where I belong, and I’m really happy and at peace with all that.
— Alabama head coach Nick Saban, 61, on Tuesday after his men’s Division I program won it’s third National Championship in four seasons. While everyone may indeed have a price, it appears that Alabama’s Nick Saban is rooted more in his heart than in his wallet. Despite continued rumors hope-based speculation that would pin the former Browns defensive coordinator back in Cleveland, the Crimson Tide head coach will be staying put with his dynasty.

“And in the two years that I was here, had a very, very difficult time thinking that I could impact the organization in the way that I wanted to or the way that I was able to in college, and it was very difficult for me.”
In other words, he could not win in Miami so he quit. It was too hard to build a team that could compete in the NFL so he went to college where it was easier. And he’s going to stay where he will just keep winning. Why challenge yourself when you can just sit back and win with ease.
so wait, if past history is indicative of future results, this is the last step before he comes to the Browns right? IIRC, before he left Miami he made the same sort of “strong” denial.
woo hoo! Welcome Coach Saban!
/s (just in case it wasn’t obvious enough)
“You learn a lot from the experiences of what you’ve done in the past.”
like how to lead the media to the opposite of what you are going to do. I see what he’s doing too
SOOOO.. YOU’RE SAYING THERE’S A CHANCE??
Bingo. In the NFL you can draft players or sign free agents but you can’t recruit a roster. It takes time to gather the personnell you want and you have to be able to develop them, motivate them and challenge them. Inspiration alone doesn’t get it done because the other guys are just as good as yours.
Sure, if you want to oversimplify it. I don’t think that’s what he was saying, though.
At Alabama, Saban is Head Coach, General Manager, Director of Player Personnel, Head Scout, Team President, Mother, Father, and Pope. For crying out loud, he’s practically Governor of the state itself. For a control freak like Saban, it just doesn’t get any better than being at the college level, particularly in the dictator-friendly SEC. The NFL is a nightmare for someone used to having that much control and influence.
I just see him Mayor Quimby style. Giving that speech viewed only from waist up while standing in Berea with a makeshift Alabama backdrop and shirt while a tailor is sizing a pair of Brown pants
Don’t we all want to work at a job that is secure and that we are proficient? Sounds reasonable to me.
Why am I not sad about this? Stay put Nick the Buckeyes and Urban Meyer will be calling soon!
Sources confirm that Browns will be switching to brown pants in 2013! #StupidTwitterRumorsThatTakeOffCausingHugeKerfufflesAmongFanCirclesAndThe Blogosphere
Cripes, they even built a statue of him (although it’s not particularly flattering)

This statement is the perfect smoke screen to keep his and Haslam’s negotiations secret. I heard they’re having dinner tonight.
Apparently not. How else do you explain Congress? They have no desire at all to be proficient.
So you’re just walking away without even trying, you typical Cleveland losers? “No” means more money!

You gotta love what people are willing to commit to permament bronze nowadays.
Sure, Bear Bryant had the classic, iconic houndstooth hat, but the good people of Alabama have also elected to eternally memorialize Saban’s inimitable longsleeve T-shirt under the performance polo.
But hey, at least they got the detail of the specific watch that he wears.
“You’re meddling with powers you can’t possibly comprehend… we have major corporations sponsoring this event!”
And that’s why if I had a dollar I’d bet he is staying at Alabama. Do I trust him? No way. But do I think he is coming to Cleveland? Not really. Would I be surprised? Not really.
But it’s like when Krzyzewski was rumored to be going to the Lakers. My feeling was, why would he? He’s a God in that town.
Same for Saban. It was different at LSU, because LSU is always going to have an inferiority complex with Alabama. No matter what Saban did there, he probably felt it may never have been enough.
Now that he’s at Alabama (Top 5 NCAA coaching job, all time, IMHO), and he is winning all of the titles…I mean to leave that to go put up with the headaches of the NFL? No way.
First: You said it.
Second: If you need to borrow some money, just ask!
so you are saying that we are hiring Les Miles?
When the ever-sponsor-friendly athletic department at Syracuse built a statue of 1961 Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis, they had the sculptor put the Nike swoosh on his shoes, even though Nike wasn’t even founded until almost a decade later.
That bet would probably be -50000
I thought you were joking. But then I looked it up. I want to cry.
*odds on that bet
Ahem. “Past history” is redundant. It’s just “history.”
/Sorry. Uh, Harv made me do it.
Hey oh! Oh those clowns in DC. What a bunch of clowns those clowns are.
Sources confirm that Browns and LSU’s Les Miles are close to an agreement!
#ThisIsEasy!
Slippy, Slappy, Swami, Swanson, Samsonite…Saban!
Nice Simpsons reference – DJ 3000 I believe?
If Nick Saban ever ran for Mayor of Tuscaloosa, he would win unanimously. He won’t get Governor of Alabama due to the Auburn fans (although Auburn sucks). The only place in Alabama where Bama and Auburn fans get along is Talladega.
other college considerations:
Pass-Happy Spread (off shoot of the run-n-shoot guys):
Dabo Swinney
Kevin Sumlin
Art Briles
Dana Holgorsen (not this year after their collapse though)
More Traditional Guys:
David Cutcliffe
Mark D’Antonio
Mark Richt
Will Muschamp
David Shaw
Bit of a mix between the two:
Charlie Strong
Les Miles
Mike Riley
Now wait a minute. Are you putting this out there as merely a rumor or as a bona fide “report”?
Good point. I forgot about Auburn. But then again, who hasn’t? Amiright?
Thank you! Don’t forget to tip your waitress!
Don’t believe you’re sorry at all. Look at you, pouncing and whatnot on a Tuesday.
liked for great username.
“well. im going to law school too.”
“really? are you going to harvard?”
“no. st. copious of northern neb…”
It’s at least a bona fide rumor. There’s no truth to it, but I heard it from mgbode. So you can take it to the bank. Not sure what they’ll do with it, but you can, and should, take it there.
What’s really important in all of this is that the Browns had better either confirm or deny it!!
league sources have not scoffed at this.

JON GRUDINS OR NUFFINK!
I heard Gary Pinkle was next in line
It’s a long line.
Then explain the whole Star Wars thing. Sure, it happened a “long time ago,” but how many wookies traveling faster than the speed of light have you encountered? It may be history, but it’s most certainly of the future.
Star Wars eventually culminated in creating the big bang, which formed our universe. Duh!
Les Miles has not refuted reports of him joining the Browns
Dabo Swinney is the new Jon Gruden with a cooler name!
not sure sumlin strictly fits in the first category. case keenum only had 35 rush yds in 2011 while putting up 5631 pass yds. i’d love it if we’d talk to him (but at the same time would like sumlin less if he left tamu after one year.).
my 1st group doesn’t have much to do with running QBs. Pass-happy-spread. The Leach system. Yes, Sumlin and Briles adopted run-components when they found mobile QBs, but the basis of the offense remained the same.
I agree that Sumlin likely wouldn’t want to leave yet either (A&M one of about 10 title contenders for next season).
My favorites from that list would be: Swinney, Strong, and Cutcliffe. In that order.
Secure? That would be on him to make the job secure – win and you’re in, lose and you’re out. Proficient? Once a job is mastered, it can become boring. New challenges keep a job interesting
“Dabo” sounds far too much like “Daboll” for my taste
/gets under desk and breaks into cold sweat
Lake effect.
Or in Big Bens case “No” means another round. Heyyyoooo!!!!! Seriously folks if you stay for the 10 pm show we’ll validate parking.
A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.
My sports knowledge is average at best but I can throw down with anyone in a Simpsons quote off
