San Francisco to send QB Alex Smith to Kansas City per reports

Last weekend it was reported that an ‘unidentified team’ had a deal in place for San Francisco QB Alex Smith. Today, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that the team is indeed the Kansas City Chiefs.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has more details about the deal:

“Chiefs traded second-round pick, the second pick in the second round, to SF. Niners also got another conditional mid-round pick in 2014.”

“SF now owns picks at No. 31, 34, and 61 in a draft with lots of depth but not a lot of surefire stars.”

Those wishing the Browns would make a move for the veteran QB can now focus their attention elsewhere.

[Related: I don't feel like it, but let's talk Browns]

Dang KC gave up a high pick for a QB (practically a first). 3rd round would have been more reasonable for the Niners apparent desperation to dump A. Smith. This would give the Niners valuable ammo to trade up if they wish. (Browns should swap firsts and take SF and KC 2nds in exchange, sounds fair to me plus we get picks back in 2nd in a draft that is apparently teeming with players in the late 1st- 2nd rounds.)

  • mgbode

SF got lucky that more teams are desperate for QB w/ this draft then teams desperate to dump a QB

  • JHop

If San Francisco can turn these picks around in a trade for Darelle Revis, they’ll have an unbelievable team next year.

  • Kildawg

True, plus if the trade I outlined happens, SF could get a ‘surefire star’ to go with Gore and Willis. Browns might miss out on a guy like Julio Jones or whoever is there at 6, but we should get solid players with the picks (Taylor, Little from the trade with Atlanta in 2011).

  • BenRM

I don’t think that it’s a terrible deal. Now you don’t have to draft Geno Smith with your first or Barkley with your second.

More importantly, I don’t have to hear Alex Smith v. Brandon Weeden arguments on every show on 92.3. (850 doesn’t even talk sports anymore.)

  • mgbode

how many days until they switch “Alex Smith” to “Matt Moore” or “Kevin Kolb” though? sorry, hours not days.

  • mgbode

or a player who isn’t old, injured and asking for $15mil/season

  • mgbode

SF just jumped up to #1 on the list of teams that may want to gamble on Tavon Austin

    Bullet dodged

  • JHop

    1) He’s only 27. (2 years younger than Brandon Weeden).

    2) Increasingly players have been able to recover from ACL tears. The obvious Peterson example aside, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee, and Jamal Lewis have all recovered from similar injuries and have come back as good as before their injuries.

    3) For a shut down corner who’s the best in the game, $15 million isn’t that unreasonable. And I’m sure he’d be willing to take a slight cut if he was able to join an elite defense.

  • mgbode

McGahee did not come back as good as before his injury. He was unstoppable at Miami. That burst left him.

Outside of that, I mostly agree on the age/injury status; it’s just that I don’t see SF going that route as they haven’t redefined the $$ market for players in the past. Plus, Revis may need a bounce-back year before he’s back to being his old self.

it will be interesting to see what SF does with all these picks though.

  • Harv 21

agree, what a great swap for SF, especially if Smith returns to his “just ok” status after leaving the Harbaugh shelter.

  • humboldt

I wonder where the collective “sigh” from Cleveland will meet the collective “meh” from Kansas City. Maybe somewhere in Indiana?

  • The Ghost Of Álvaro Espinoza

Can it be? Can it really be true?! The Browns, potentially, will be starting the same quarterback in back-to-back season openers. Unless the mediocre backup the team brings in to “compete” with Weeden, wins the job.

  • mgbode

    2012 Brandon Weeden
    2011 Colt McCoy
    2010 Jake Delhomme
    2009 Brady Quinn
    2008 Derek Anderson
2007 Charlie Frye (1 half only, but he was the guy who started)
    2006 Charlie Frye
    2005 Trent Dilfer
    2004 Jeff Garcia
    2003 Kelly Holcomb
    2002 Kelly Holcomb
    2001 Tim Couch
    2000 Tim Couch
    1999 Ty Detmer

  • mgbode

SF, with Harbaugh still bitter over losing to his brother, will now sign Joe Flacco giving Baltimore the #31 and their 1st rounder next year.

Then, they will turn around and trade Flacco to the Browns for the #6 and next year’s 2nd round pick.

SF will pickup Milliner and have a young, cheap shutdown corner for the next 5 years for their defense.

Either way, both far out of earshot to hear the roaring laughs in SF. What a coup for the Niners!

Nothing personal bode, that down tick is for the contents of the list

  • humboldt

What kind of monster only eats half a donut?

  • mgbode

no worries. how sad is it that 1999 (after the Detmer disaster) – 2003 amounts to stable QB play for us?

  • BenRM

    truth be unto that.

  • mgbode

want to feel better? ESPN brought up a crazy note today:

“The last time the Chiefs won a game quarterbacked by a player the team drafted was in 1987 when 1983 first-round pick Todd Blackledge led the team. It is the longest such streak in the NFL. The Chiefs have since drafted 10 quarterbacks who have failed to win a game.”

of course, part of that time they were QB’d by Joe Montana (I don’t think they mind those memories), but that is still crazy.

  • http://twitter.com/bbo13 B-bo

    The horror…the horror…

  • http://twitter.com/bbo13 B-bo

Not entirely sure I’d turn down Joe Montana right now, as is. Looked pretty sharp in those Sketchers commercials

  • mgbode

we’d have to bring back the WCO (he didn’t have the strongest arm before he was 56yo), but yeah. pretty much.

  • mgbode

ESPN is now showing the FULL list of Browns’ starting QBs since 1999. Congratulations to Jake Delhomme on being the only starting QB even at .500 (and, of course, it comes with the note of not starting the Falcon game, but being a HUGE reason we lost it).
