Pretty good but it’s sure no “What if?” campaign!! 😉
I think it’s safe to say that team morale is at it’s highest now than any time since the ’90s. It’s crazy how big of a difference one season can make.
higher than the 2005-2008 (just through opening day that year, though Lee did win the Cy Young)?
opening day 2006 featured in-his-prime Grady, Pronk, Victor, CC w/ a team coming back from a last-week collapse in 2005 and we all expected big things. Peralta was among the new guys contributing and there were cult followings for Casey Blake and Jake Westbrook.
I still don’t know how that team only won 78 games (answer: CC was our only good pitcher. In 2007, Fausto started dominating and gave us 2 top guys – good enough despite the rest of the staff struggling).
Think injuries decimated 2006 and 2008 (leading to Sabathia trade that year). Hafner was especially bit hard with injury bug. 2009-2012 was developing a new core and we added key pieces including 2 of the top 5 FAs during offseason. At least we have the same Opening Day SP for consecutive years for first time since 2003-2008 (Sabathia).
2008, yes, injuries hurt bigtime. But, 2006 was more about the regression of our pitching staff from 2005 (Lee, Westbrook, Byrd). It didn’t seem like we got especially hit hard by injuries that year.
