NFL News: Browns Agree To Terms With DT Desmond Bryant
March 12, 2013While We’re Waiting… Getting to know you…
March 13, 2013The Cleveland Browns have reportedly agreed to terms on a two-year deal with outside linebacker Quentin Groves, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals.
Cleveland back at it bright and early: Browns reached agreement with former Cardinals LB Quentin Groves.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 13, 2013
Groves, 28, measures in a 6-feet-3-inches and 225 pounds. He and new Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton spent last season together in Arizona where the linebacker was a useful reserve, tallying 46 tackles and four sacks despite starting just seven times. He played in all 16 games in 2012, and has played in no fewer than 15 during his five years in the NFL.
Groves reportedly had multiple teams interested in his services and had several visitis scheduled before agreeing to terms with the Browns. He figures to add to the edge-rushing line-backing corps of Jabaal Sheard, Chris Gocong and the newly signed Paul Kruger.
His deal with the Browns is for two years and $2.8 million, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

We need offense!!
so no Jarvis Jones, then? Hmmm….i smell a trade-down. I sure hope i don’t smell Geno Smith.
Not only that, but it seems like we now have too much defense. What’s going to happen with Sheard, Winn, and Hughes? I’m all for depth, but I’m concerned that we may trade away one of our bright young defensive players to make way for these signings.
Groves is signed for $1.5mil/year. That is absolutely perfect for the situational pass rusher that he is.
one of the reasons I liked Horton for the DC job is
that he finds what players are good at and puts them in situations to
use it.
Daryl Washington is small for a 3-4 ILB, but Horton
stunted him off the NT and even DE’s on blitzes to help him be able to
utilize his speed.
Quentin Groves was considered all but washed
out of the NFL, but Horton saw that he could get the edge, so he was a
situational pass rusher for Arizona and he thrived in that role.
why? we now have Sheard, Kruger, and Groves for OLB. I am still unsure Sheard can make the transition (sadly, he is the one young guy who I think we might trade). Even with him, we are still short one OLB.
yes, more likely a trade down now though. CB2 (Xavier Rhodes), S (Vaccaro), or a premier TE (Eifert) could all be had in the late teens to early twenties. If we can pickup a 2nd and another 1st next year, then it is worth considering.
What position, exactly, were the Browns to upgrade on offense during the first wave of free agency?
Sheard is the starting OLB. Groves is a reserve. Wynn and Hughes will continue to rotate in on the line. Hughes wasnt going to start ahead of Taylor anyway. Depth is a good thing.
Why “ugh” for OG? I think that’s probably our biggest need currently
Any thoughts about going after Michael Huff? Don’t know enough about him to have an opinion.
Especially on the defensive line.
Because #6 is a high price to be paid for a good OG when good ones can generally be had far later in the draft, via unheralded FA signings, etc.
especially when there are 2 good OGs in this draft. we should at least “pull an Alex Mack” and trade back 10-15 spots and still get one of them (while picking up a 2nd this year and a 1st next year).
he was really good, once upon a time. but, I have only heard negative things the past couple of seasons and he’s 30yo now.
Now I’m really thinking the Browns will attempt to trade Sheard to a team with a 4-3 defense and recoup that second round pick.
He’s probably more valuable to another team as a promising pass-rushing end than to us as a third-year guy trying to transition to OLB for the first time.
whoa, exchanging #6 for #15-20 is good for a second rounder and next year’s first rounder? Maybe someone’s coming with an early case of draft fever … my chart is still in moth balls but think that’s wishful.
Groves is a passing down specialist and a good one at that.
Charlie Casserly keeps saying that Sheard is worth a 1st round pick in a trade. One benefit of Lombardi is he has friends in the media to spread his propaganda. Let’s hope it works 🙂
I think Jones is still the target or maybe Jordan. We still need LBs and we really need a stud we can’t hang our hat on for years to come.
see Julio Jones trade (I even took out the 2x4th round picks as a sweetener for our trade partner). no wonder Hollywood picked Cleveland for the movie, we know our trade-downs 🙂
it really depends on when the OTs go in this draft. there are 3 good ones. if 2 happen to go in the top5, then there will be a mad rush to get the last one.
seems steep, maybe more possible if he had a stronger second year. Not sure how a GM sells that deal to a fanbase but whatevs, the next year will tell us how well Lombardi’s bluster works on some real-life GMs.
Still possible Milliner is there… with all the press Jarvis Jones is getting, he’ll be gone… Milliner would be perfect now that we’ve addressed the DEF need areas.
IF we trade down I say Minnesota take their 23, 25 and 55 picks
yeah, I thought of that but ATL was a team looking for that final playmaker who looked can’t miss. Could also get big returns for a good QB. But Sheard?
I like this. Do it now.
Even if Milliner is gone… worst case scenario is we get a stud DE like Ansah, or Jordan. I can live with that. I wouldn’t trade the pick.
But can they get a 2nd rounder for him? I don’t know. He’s young and had a very good 2nd half, but the 1st half of the year showed that he needs solid players around him to be impactful. If we do trade him, then we should go with Ansah or Jordan at #6.
Scott, don’t you think a top TE would have been nice (Cook)? And after that, a veteran WR to anchor our young core of guys would have been good as well (Jennings, maybe). But, it’s early… we’ll see what happens today. I’m very pleased with the moves so far.
Thus far I am really enjoying the FO’s implementation of the “won’t do much in FA” strategy.
mgbode must be doing a little jig right about now… or you know, whenever he heard about this signing. Great addition talent-wise and a guy who knows Horton’s defense already. Win-win.
Yeah, hurry it up Harv… we’re not exactly patient people around here.
There has been a commonality between these three signings that I love to see. A History of being healthy and on the field for all 3 guys throughout their careers.
So far so good.
I agree… TD has been saying that his brother knows that Detroit really likes Jarvis Jones. Kiper has him as a better for as a 4-3 OLB than a 3-4 OLB, which would fit Detroit’s scheme. If he lasts until pick 5, I think Detroit will snag him. I’d be perfectly happy with Milliner as our CB #2 or Jordan as a starting OLB.
when did they say “wont do much in FA”?
I smell eagles 2011. Hope I’m wrong.
points don’t add up on that one. especially not with this years class.
Gotta agree with Harv, there are no skill position players as dynamic as Julio in this draft. I just think the market for a trade up is crummier this year due to the lack of stud skill position dudes, so we can probably expect a 2nd this year and a 2nd next year for trading down that far.
Not going to plug every hole in FA. Deep draft for TE’s and veteran wideouts can be had after day 1 of FA. I for one am not panicking about the “O”…..yet…..
better than my morning coffee 🙂
I think it was December 11. Somewhere around 2:48 p.m.
Yeah, I don’t recall exactly. I have a vague recollection of Hasbannerbardi saying something to that effect at some point in recent time and space. I also have post-concussion syndrome seasoned with PTSD, though, so it very well could be a complete fabrication of my synapses.
Anyway, the Browns traditionally don’t do much in FA. That is their traditional strategy. (Romeo, please stop waving your hand from the back row. We do remember that one glorious off-season of Willy McGinest, and we’re trying to forget it!)
Can I just go with that? I’m just going to go with that. Look. I’m not aiming for “truth” or “accuracy.” I’m just shooting for laughs.
I’m sure it’s been argued already, but I think Cook is a pipe dream. He’s wildly inconsistent and it has shown up in his stats over the past 4 years. I was actually really happy to see that St Louis paid him the big bucks so that the Browns wouldn’t. I’d love it if the Browns could pick up Kevin Boss… he’s a decent receiver, but more importantly he’s a fantastic blocking tight end, which I think the Browns really need since TE #2 is Jordan Cameron, who improved as a blocker last year, but is still poor.
please explain. Eagles got alot of hype for getting DRC+Asomugha and then “name” players in Ronnie Brown & Vince Young (both backups).
other than that, they didn’t end up fixing either line, which sunk them (though they did try – just picked the wrong guys). they also were done in by losing steady LBers and not replacing them (so underestimating their value).
Is Harv not the guy that calls the shots? When did that change?
(I can’t believe I did that thing where people post a comment on an internet article thinking the subject of the article is going to read it. “Oh, Duchess Kate, you are so beautiful. Please give my best to your Prince Charming!” I hate myself.)
He also put up some good stats after the bye week last year, which is when Horton made him a starter. His tackling numbers spiked for 4 straight weeks (although they did tail off for 3 weeks after that). I don’t think he should be a starter, but he certainly seems like good depth.
I think Cameron is a pipe dream as well 🙂
I was actually sad that Delanie Walker was signed. Cook ‘could’ be good and we still need a TE for Norv/Chud’s system. Is it Myers? Is it Finley who is very similar to Cook (if released)? Or, is it a draft pick?
I don’t know, but I trust Norv/Chud on this one.
Maybe the FO does read internet comments?? WFNY is their prime source for FA strategy? They really should be giving some credit to mgbode.
yes, that is why I said it depends on the OTs. We want 2 OTs taken (and not 3) before our pick. Plenty of teams value and need a LT and may overpay for one.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/mock-drafts
all show at least 2 (and 1/4 has all 3) taken before our pick, so it’s at least a possibility worth pondering IMO.
It’s a consensus now. So, I think that means Scott or Craig has to put up a poll for all of us to vote on.
Luckily this isn’t the same situation. The Browns haven’t overpaid for anyone yet (maybe Bryant, but it’s not a killer deal). They are not loading the team with supposed stars either. I would say Miami fits the bill for the 2011 Eagles… gave way too much money to Mike Wallace and I think they overpaid Philip Wheeler. They tried to throw a pile of money at Jared Cook and will probably end up throwing it at Dustin Keller instead. Dolphins fans should be wary.

Feb 1st – Superbowl week. Good one Jimmy, give your best to the wife (see Garry, I can do it too).
I don’t think Milliner gets past JAX.
