“Brown is known as a defensive guru, and while he’s mostly held up to that ideal, it’s also important to point out that his Cavalier teams were stocked with defensive-minded pluggers surrounding an ever-improving defensive game-changer in James. Two of Brown’s seasons in Cleveland resulted in mediocre defensive rankings, as did his one full’ish year in Los Angeles, but by and large the man has the opponents’ tendencies already known by heart before he drives into the arena. The guy knows the game, and coaches should be allowed the same amount of chances for a career arc that players are.
It’s still hard to get over Mike Brown’s low points, though.
Brown seemed hapless as the Cavaliers were tossed too-early from the playoffs in 2009 and 2010. His work as a TV analyst during 2010-11 was unremarkable, and he seemed to have no sway over the Lakers during both the team’s odd 2011-12 regular season, the team’s disappointing 4-1 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in last year’s second round, and Los Angeles’ 1-4 start to the 2012-13 regular season. Ramona Shelburne is reporting that Brown and the Cavs didn’t see eye-to-eye on a possible contract extension as the team headed into that infamous 2010 offseason, but a Cavalier franchise that bent over backwards to LeBron James’ whims for years prior to that summer to that would also seem to be the sort of team to dump a GM (former Cavalier boss Danny Ferry) and coach just to see what the Big Free Agent wanted.” [Dwyer/Ball Don’t Lie]

Linking even if just for the open– “Welcome back, To that same old place that you laughed about. Well the names have all changed since you hung around, But those dreams have remained and they’re turned around. Who’d have thought they’d lead ya (Who’d have thought they’d lead ya) Here where we need ya (Here where we need ya)…” [Moore/Red Right 88]

“I’d hold off on bringing Bauer up. Part of this is the financial component. The difference between bringing him up in three weeks and bringing him up in ten weeks is likely to be somewhere between $10-15 million between 2016-2018. It’s not just the money though. Bauer didn’t look good in his one MLB start this month or in his stint in the big leagues with Arizona last September. I’d like to see him show he’s too good for AAA for a little longer.
I suspect the front office feels the same way, but they don’t return my calls, so I don’t know for sure.
Carlos Carrasco would be my choice. He hasn’t allowed any runs yet in Columbus, in his most recent start he struck out 10 in 6 innings, against just 2 hits and 1 walk. He’s looked even better than Bauer there and he’s also had more success in The Show. I don’t see the eight-game suspension as a huge obstacle. Most teams carry 12 pitchers, the Indians have been carrying 13. Bringing Carrasco up to serve his time would only put them back to a normal-sized bullpen, without shortening the bench they’ve been playing with. The next time there’s a vacancy, I’d bring Carrasco up and wait out the eight games. I think he gives them the best chance of winning.” [Lukehart/Let’s Go Tribe]

Why is drafting so hard- “More disconcerting is that teams really don’t see very much of a player in college. If a player starts for four years and doesn’t get hurt, he might end up playing 50 games across his college career. Assuming he plays for a decent school in a big conference, 10 of those games will come against significantly inferior competition, teams from I-AA or the worst independent schools. Another 15 will be against teams in the bottom of the conference, producing meaningless statistics against players who will be selling insurance in a year. So that leaves 25 games of possibly meaningful film against competent competition. With liberal roster sizes and more frequent substitutions, maybe a guy gets 40 snaps per game. That’s 1,000 snaps over four years, and that’s assuming his freshman or sophomore film looks anything like the guy who finished up at school. Maybe you knock that down to 600 snaps. If you want to scout a specific skill — say, a linebacker’s awareness in zone coverage — you’re ignoring run plays or pass plays in which he was in man coverage. Now you’re down to 150 snaps, which might even be in a 3-4 when you play a 4-3. And remember: That’s the best-case scenario. Imagine what you look at for a pass rusher who had one big year and left school early.” [Barnwell/Grantland]

“I had zero interest in a training-wheels coach, someone who has never been an NBA head coach. The team is young enough, the last thing it needs is more inexperience on the bench. That eliminated the likes of Mike Malone and Brian Shaw. The Cavs simply can’t mess up this hire with Kyrie Irving able to begin discussing a contract extension in the summer of 2014. The All-Star guard can’t become a restricted free agent until the summer of 2015, when the Cavs can match any offer that he’d receive from another team.
But the point isn’t just “keeping Kyrie happy” and almost begging him to stay. It’s building a team with Irving that makes the playoffs next season and then moves in the direction of title contention by the spring of 2015. Brown is the right coach at this time. He was in the process of moving his family back to Cleveland a few months ago, long before Scott was fired following a late-season collapse of 16 losses in 18 games.” [Pluto/Cleveland.com]

“His work as a TV analyst during 2010-11 was unremarkable”
well, then obviously he cannot be a good coach. I agree with a bunch of points he makes, but what was the point of this comment?
And Pluto’s quote: “Brown is the right coach at this time. He was in the process of moving his family back to Cleveland a few months ago.” – That makes him a stronger candidate???
that sounds like Chris Grant and Mike Brown knew about this hire months ago.
Dwyer had some rare positive Cavs posts recently, but this more typical of his work. What does TV work have to do with Brown’s coaching ability? Does Mangini’s work with ESPN suddenly make him a better coach?
I really like watching Mangini on tv. Doesn’t speak in anchor-tone or in boring cliché. Very likeable and even humble, it would seem. He’ll get another shot soon.
saw that too. As if cute quips, fake yuks with panel and fan likeability in studio have anything to do with coaching a team. Parcells and Belichik are the worst on a set. Totally weird observation.
Great point I’ll bet even longer but I’m not going to rail and complain about Brown instead I’ll let my silence speak for me when it comes to the Cavaliers. I thought the hiring of Pat Shurmur was bad but I think this tops it. It’s also another chink in the armor of Dan Little Napoleon Gilbert for me and I just hope for the Cavaliers fans left it’s not their Waterloo!
Maybe that his personality lacked as well which is part of why he became a wallflower in many a team huddle.
I actually thought Bauer’s start wasn’t as bad as the stat line indicated. In that first inning he was putting his pitches where he wanted for the most part, but was getting pretty seriously squeezed. They only got 2 hits on him, and one of them was a home run primarily because he was being forced to throw meatballs down the middle. I give him credit for battling through 5 innings and limiting them to 3 runs instead of having it blow up.
That said, I agree that he’s not the guy who should be brought up. He’s so young, and pitching for couple of months in AAA will be good for him. Let him blow guys away for another 10 starts or so, and let him continue to work on various issues in a lower pressure situation.
Carrasco may have had about as bad a day as one could have imagined in his first start back from surgery and suspension, but his stuff was fantastic. If he can consistently throw strikes on both sides of the plate he’ll be VERY tough to hit. I’m actually more hopeful for his future than before. However, I suspect that with the way he went out at the end of his start, that they’ll give Kluber an opportunity before bringing somebody else up. He’s pitched well in relief, and he’s already on the roster.
By June, though, I expect Myers’ bout of “tendinitis” to become “Tommy John surgery” and Carrasco will be in the rotation. And if Jiminez doesn’t become consistently decent by then, Bauer will be in the rotation too.
I love having you around Shammy, but when have you EVER let your silence speak for you?
LoL Matt you caught me man I can admit it but give me a few days and I promise silence will be golden. I’m just a little passionate right now over how so many people have changed the history of the tenure of Mike Brown. I realize he was named the coach of the year and his teams amassed some of the best records in franchise history but they also lost. Like Brad Pitt said in “Moneyball” when the character of Art Howe said he went 102-60, “If you lose the last game no one gives a damn!”
