NBA News: Cavaliers add Igor Kokoskov to coaching ranks

(Update: Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports that Kokoskov has accepted the position with the Cavaliers.)

The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly set to add Phoenix Suns assistant coach Igor Kokoskov to the bench that will help aid newly re-signed head coach Mike Brown throughout the 2013-14 NBA season and beyond.

With the Suns coaching ranks in a state of flux following the addition of Jeff Hornacek, ESPN’s Mark Stein reports that the Cavs are “closing in” on the highly regarded assistant coach who has spent the last four seasons in Phoenix. Kokoskov, 41, is widely known for his expertise on offense and was recently tapped to be the Suns’ lead assistant due to the balance he would provide to interim head coach Lindsey Hunter’s defensive slant.

Prior to joining the Suns, Kokoskov spent the previous five seasons with the Detroit Pistons, reaching the conference finals in each campaign, earning two NBA Finals appearances and the 2004 NBA title. If Kokoskov were to stay in Phoenix and Hunter were to be retained, he would have been expected to call plays on the offensive side of the ball, serving as an “offensive coordinator” of sorts. He was reportedly a well-liked coach, a trusted tactician for former Suns coach Alvin Gentry and a was reportedly a key mentor in point guard Goran Dragic’s development in two Phoenix stints.

Sounds like a good hire if it comes to fruition.

    THE Igor Kokoskov?

[Scott my brother, get one correct spelling of his name in the story]

[When I rejected those who said no one should advocate firing Byron without naming his better replacement, this is what I meant. Stand on your head if you knew of Igor’s coaching prowess]

Sounds like a hockey coach, perfect! But hey if he helped turn DRAGO into a player I’m sure he’ll help.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. THE Ivan Drago???

    “I must break you.”

Mike Brown hires offensive co-ordinator :)

Seriously though, I really like a bunch of Phoenix’s offensive sets. They lacked the talent to execute them when it wasn’t Dragic, Scola or Gortat finishing them though (Dudley was their “premier” 3pt shooter). Also, Dragic really transformed himself passing the ball, so maybe he can help Irving with his distribution skills?

His ‘lil brother! Now if the Cavaliers can tap into the Russian pipeline maybe we have something.

Still wish Scola would have been signed, oh well.

I was wondering if the buzz was backed up in the film… can’t say I’ve noticed PHX’s team at all, but I know that the Suns don’t have much talent to carry out these offensive schemes.

  • Ben Frambaugh

Love the idea of him bringing this guy in. I have a buddy who is a die hard Suns fan…he’s calling BS on this (but he’s also holding his fingers in his ears, squinting his eyes and shouting, I CAN’T HEAR YOU! I CAN’T HEAR YOU! I CAN’T HEAR YOU!) LOL

  • mgbode

that was a bidding process. our own fault we didn’t get him if I remember correctly (and I agree – always liked him)

Dragic, Gortat and Morris were personal favorites entering the season, so I watched them a bit. Morris was terrible (like he did no offseason conditioning, he was “fluffy”), but the other two really excelled and they moved the ball amazing well for as bad as they were shooting it (13th in assists, 21st in points).

  • saggy

who is a diehard Suns fan?

  • Vindictive_Pat

It’s gotta be Jeff Hornacek… or Dan Majerle?

  • Ben Frambaugh

A buddy of mine who was born out there. We met in the military and have managed to keep in touch. He’s pretty much die hard everything Arizona. Poor guy.

  • saggy

yep, sounds like Hornacek to me.

  • Ben Frambaugh

LOL – I can assure you, my friend would never be confused with Hornacek. Too short, too unathletic, little shooting touch and crappy ankles. But funny anyways!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I tend to remember the same and also remember you mentioning that you liked him. I thought he’d have been a perfect fit even had Varejao stayed healthy.

What do you mean “Poor Guy”? You’re a Cleveland fan! I’ll take a World Series ring and a Super Bowl appearance any day :)

  • wildrover4

I’m just happy Brown won’t be running the offense.

  • Ben Frambaugh

LOL – yeah, he says the same about me being a Cleveland fan. Guess it’s more of an inside joke between us. Just like when we call each other…and the wife answers the phone, the first question out of each of our mouth’s is, “Where’s Fat@$$” ?
