Animated: Miguel Cabrera throws gum at Ryan Raburn

In the midst of his home run trot on Sunday afternoon, Indians utility man Ryan Raburn took a wad of gum from the hand of Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera.

Raburn’s home run effectively ended Tigers’ pitcher Jose Alvarez’ bid for a no-hitter in the fifth inning. Raburn, a former Detroit Tiger, cracked a smile before stepping on the bag. The Tigers cracked even bigger ones after sweeping the Indians in Detroit.

Through 35 games and 106 at bats with the Tribe, Raburn is hitting .292 with seven home runs and 20 runs batted in.

    Classless as always big boy.

Something tells me that there’s a more innocent backstory to that. Seems like some sort of friendly-ish thing, given Raburn’s non-reaction. If it was done with malice, then seriously, he needs to come up with something better than that.

I tend to agree. These guys were teammates with the Tigers for a number of years, so Cabrera was likely just messing with him.

Yea as much as I wish I could use that in my hating of him, it seems like it’s innocent. Meh

Cabrera was messin’ with a former teammate take it easy now although some of Miguel’s antics of late have gotten a little tiring. That said he’s the best hitter in baseball whether anyone likes him or not.

Before the game, Rayburn said to Cabrera, “I bet you a stick of gum that I hit a homerun today.” Cabrera was just making good on the bet, is all.

I was gonna flip out until I read the other comments. I couldn’t see a grown tolerating something like that. Cabrera’s antics of late have been unbelievably obnoxious in my opinion. I don’t see how a pitcher hasn’t lit him up for it by now.

Yeah, we may be sick and tired of him, but I’ve heard that he’s viewed as a great teammate – and not just for his performance on the field. Apparently, he’s immensely popular among the Tiger players off the field. I’m sure his extended to Rayburn while he was there (and since). Just a harmless nothing.

His antics..? I watch most tigers games and lots of sports center, am i must be missing something? Unless your talking about his .361 avg, 69 RBI’s and 18 Home Runs? Antics?
