NBA Rumors: Cavs interested in trading for Luol Deng; No. 1 pick in play?

June 24, 2013The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have recalled left-handed pitcher T.J. House from Triple-A Columbus.
House, 23, has gone a combined 3-8 with a 4.83 ERA in 15 starts between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus this year. His 75 strikeouts (in 87 2/3 innings pitched) are second most among Indians Minor League pitchers in 2013.
Over his last eight starts at Triple-A, House’s ERA is 4.56 (49.1IP, 51H, 25ER) and he is currently tied for second in the International League with two complete games. House (No. 40) will be making his debut at the Major League level after spending the last five seasons since 2009 in the Player Development system. He was originally Cleveland’s 16th round selection (501st overall) in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. It is expected that House will join the Indians’ bullpen upon his arrival given the lack of quality left-handed production received over the course of the season.
To make room for House, the Tribe has optioned right-handed starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A Columbus. Carrasco is 0-3 with a 7.78 ERA in 4 starts over two stints with Cleveland this season.

House – You must protect this House!
Don’t get it, but I didn’t see Carrasco’s last start. Something makes them think he’s still not ready to take the next step, despite those great 7 innings a week ago. Maybe he’s refusing coaching instructions or acting immaturely off the field and they’re determined to show him that being in The Show is a privilege earned.
I think there was something going on with his leg his last start…

It’s possible that this is just roster shenanigans. They have a double-header coming up, and you’re allowed to bring a guy back for that double-header even if he was sent down less than 10 days ago. So I think they’re just adding an extra reliever for that time, and Carrasco happens to have an option and be scheduled to pitch that day. We shall see.
Yeah, I didn’t see any postgame interviews, but when they went to the mound after he looked to be shortening his follow through it seemed he was having tightness or stiffness in his right calf. He was trying to stretch it out a little bit afterward.
I actually thought he didn’t pitch all that badly, all things considered. He didn’t have his best control, but it was a very small strike zone for both pitchers and he really battled and kept his cool. He threw a lot of pitches and had good velocity right to the end. Plus, 2 of his three runs were let home by the bullpen after he left. They were his base runners true, but our bullpen’s propensity to let them score has to be among the worst in the majors, so it should be taken into consideration. It certainly wasn’t a regression to what he looked like in his first two starts.
I’m sure this is about having extra bullpen depth for the doubleheader.
optioning due to injury? Even if this is permitted under CBA doesn’t make sense to me – if they want him to contribute this year, they’d want him to do it under the big league trainers and the Cleve Clinic guidance. They’d just DL him for 15 days.
No reason Carrasco should be wasting away in AAA, it’s put up or shut up time for him. I really don’t think he’s got anything left to learn in Columbus as he dominated AAA hitters in his time there and he honestly has better stuff than any other starting pitcher on the roster. We need to see if he can put it all together and become a successful major league starter.
He’s not exactly young either as he’s already 26 and will be eligible for his first year of arbitration next season. I also don’t think he pitched terrible in his last outing. He gave up a crucial hit in the 5th, but even with that, he gave you the chance to win, only surrendering 3 runs.
PS just read that this he will still start friday because of the DH rule, but my point remains that he should be in the major leagues to stay from now on. Hopefully he doesn’t have to miss a start because of this.
Any news for the ZMac return? It would be nice to bring him back to start the night game of the double header.
