June 27, 2013The Cleveland Cavalier have reportedly offered the first-overall draft pick to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD reports that the Cavs have offered the top pick in the 2013 NBA Draft for New Orleans point guard Greivis Vasquez, the No. 6 overall pick and a 2014 first-round pick. As Kennedy states, the 2014 NBA Draft is widely considered to be substantially better from a top-end player standpoint.
The Cavaliers have reportedly been attempting to decide between six different players, so acquiring the sixth-overall selection in any potential trade would ensure that Chris Grant would leave Thursday evening’s festivities with one of their top targets.
The 6-foot-6-inch Vazquez is coming off of a solid season where he averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game. He was the 28th-overall selection in 2010 by the Memphis Grizzlies. How he would fit in with the Cavaliers, given the presence of Kyrie Irving, would be worth pondering. The Cavaliers, naturally, have not confirmed the reported trade offer. The Pelicans, however, have denied receiving any such offer.

This makes NO sense unless the Cavs are going to flip Waiters. Vasquez is a 1-2 guard as well. Cavs could still get Len at 6, which is good. Can’t see Pelicans trading the first-rounder unless it is lottery protected anyways…and if it is, Cavs will be stuck waiting years and years for that pick just like they are for the Kings pick.
Greivis would be an ideal backup in our smallish backcourt, skilled enough to play the 1, big enough to play the 2. Would have to imagine the 2014 pick would be at least somewhat protected (Top 3, Top 5?) for the Pelicans to have any interest.
Also with Irving/Waiters/Greivis we’d be hoping that McLemore and Oladipo go Top 5 and either Len, Bennett or Porter slide.
we need a 3rd guard and it really depends on the protections of that ’14 1st rounder. if it’s all the way lottery protected, then we should calmly hang up the phone.
Smokescreens, smokescreens.
Len or Noel will be the pick and Porter as a dark horse. I’d prefer Len, but I can see why Noel is coveted.
How would New Orleans be able to trade 1st round picks 2 years in a row?
They’d be getting our #1 pick back, so I think they’d be fine from a Stepien Rule perspective.
they wouldn’t. they would agree w/ the Cavs. we’d take a player for them, they’d take a player for us. then, we’d make the trade official (once you draft a player, it is not included in the Stepein rule).
it’s why you see players often go through the motions with the wrong hat even though it’s being reported they have been traded.
I’m starting to think Chris Grant is just playing NBA Draft Mad Libs with these beat writers…
Agreed. It looks like the Suns will take a SG and it would be awesome if Trey Burke goes top 5 as well(slightly doubtful, but possible). With Noel a Top 4 lock, it looks like Porter or Bennett would at least fall to us, possibly both if WAS takes Len.
If this is true then I’m starting to believe that Bennett is the target. He’d probably be there at 6, so if he is the guy, this trade is a good deal.
WAS could also surprise and take Oladipo and hope he can be the wing defender that they need (if they feel he can guard enough SFs).
My thoughts exactly. Gotta start the bidding somewhere. Or at least make another team think it’s begun.
Only, assuming the 2014 draft pick is unprotected.
I do like Bennett a lot. His repertoire on offense is really impressive and I think his shooting percentage can look better on a team like the Cavs where he isn’t the primary scorer. I think Brown can coach him up to where he’s at least acceptable on the defensive end. So freaking athletic too… the guy is a beast and will only add more muscle.
If Bennett is of interest not sure where he’s going to play unless Thompson moves to center or the bench. Varejao will be back plus they have Zeller. I like Bennett but I don’t see a fit.
Where’s he gonna play tho?
I’d guess backup PF behind Thompson. Andy continues to play at C.
I’d rather take Larkin at #19 or move up myself but I can see how possibly getting a pick next year is of interest. The Cavaliers have the Grizzlies first next year as well I believe.
Sam Amico is reporting a Pelicans official denies this. Said “people are just making stuff up now.”
no.way. only the truth gets reported!!!
(actually, a Pelicans source saying it’s a lie makes me think it was offered — SILLY SEASON IS PEAKING!!!!)
He could very well be right, but then again I often think that Sam Amico is “just making stuff up”. It’s all just speculation right now, but it gives us something to talk about 🙂
Hmmmm #6 on a talented backup?
Lol, true. Speaking of which, I just read that Stefan Bondy of the NY Daily News claims the Nets have talked to the Cavs about trading the #22 pick for CJ Miles.
If mgbode would have listened to me a year ago the Cavaliers would have gotten Brook Lopez! 😉
But hey done deal Jay-Z thanks!
I’m sure it’s tough not to report on all these rumors. You can disclaim that you don’t know if it’s substantive, but the guy with the most juicy rumors will get the readers. In this case, though, it’s the reporting of an un-rumor. I find myself more likely to believe the refuting of a rumor than the existence of it.
I didn’t even realize that I was the main power-broker. Why don’t I get any $$$? Or at least some free steaks.
Can you at least get me some free tickets?
You know you put the k-bosh on my Brook Lopez just admit it!
Yessir… that’s all the Cavs are going to be doing with this year’s pick regardless of who it is. I’m buying that they are going to address SF either by trade or free agency, so that leaves no starting positions open. Even if the Cavs went Noel or Len, they’d be behind AV.
sure, and jerseys to wear (if they send me any!).
okay, well, we’ll know if I have any power because the Cavs will find a way to get Franklin or KCP on the team and then they should be sending my free stuff in the mail.
The center spot makes somewhat more sense though even with Zeller around. Varejao isn’t dependable to play an entire season plus his contract is nearing an end which should make for some trade bait. Thompson unless traded isn’t going anywhere. Thompson isn’t big enough to play center and I don’t think Bennett is either. Got me.
I’m a big fan of KCP. I’d love to somehow land him with a later pick.
also, it’s not that uncommon. Kanter/Favors w/ Utah were both high picks and started off as backups.
Heh, the curse of a quality roster. We’re used to plugging waiver wire pickups in to the starting lineup, so it will take some getting used to.
A 24-58 team with the #1 overall choice who hasn’t won more then 35 games in three years can’t afford this otherwise they might as well stay in the lottery and continue to be a farm team for other teams.
Things have reached the point where i can pretty much talk myself into anything. So id assume ths trade would bring a 3 guard rotation of KI, Dion and Vasquez and a Front court rotation of AV, TT, and Bennett
Do we still flip picks for Marion and 13? giving us a SF rotation of SMarion and Karasev?
I can live with this(until the next rumor in 3…2…)
I think they would probably add another center to the mix as well… either via draft, trade, or FA.
It’s already up 🙂 Newest rumor is some deal for Ibaka. Fun Fun!
For example, maybe they do that trade with Dallas to bring in Marion + the #13 pick and they spend that pick on Steven Adams.
Peaking!! Peaking!! Amico j’ accuse … Brown pushes Bennett while his son screams traitor, Potapenko pulls Gobert while his countrymen scream traitor …first overalls for #6 overalls and a backup…dogs and cats living together … WHO STOLE MY GLYCERIN PILLS
On ABAO they reported the Cavaliers offering the #19 for Thomas Robinson so who knows.
The Serge Protector – YES, YES, YES, YES!
nice. I assume we get Durant, Westbrook, and Ibaka for all our draft choices and Andy, right?
I heard its Dion for Reggie Williams and the rights to Danny Ferry (shout out to my fellow old timers)
I’m warming to this. The intangibles, the winning programs …
ABAO reports that if the Cavaliers use the #1 it’ll be Len. If they draft anyone else it’ll be in a pick and trade. Interesting.
pfffffttttt…..only if we get Ferry to sign a 10yr deal, and there’s just no way he agrees to such a thing.
ok, offer 15. What’s he gonna do, go play hardball in Italy?
eh, I’m not worried about it. citing records when Irving admitted the Cavs held him out longer (or more) than necessary to tank isn’t going to do much for me.
draft the best players and then play the best players on your roster. make trades where necessary.
let’s make the last 5yrs of that a player option to come back as GM whenever he feels like it. I think that’ll seal things.
