August 1, 2013As much fun as Indians fans have been having during the recent streak, the team has followed suit in the power rankings around the media. Joe Lemire from SI has the Indians on the rise yet again as they climb to number six from 11.
In their last 16 games, the Indians have gone 12-4 while allowing more than four runs only twice. During that stretch, all six pitchers who have started games have fared well for a 2.27 rotation ERA and .197 average against.
The only downside? The Detroit Tigers are No. 1 climbing from the six-hole last week.
On the ESPN side of things, it isn’t quite as exciting as of July 29 as the Indians are currently ranked 12th. If the power rankings also take into account style points, there’s no telling how high they can climb as the team attempts to wear out Tom Hamilton’s voice with late-game heroics.

The Indians are hot right now. But the way this season has gone, they will probably get swept by Detroit next week…

But pray tell, what is a “power ranking,” and why should we care?
It’s like the BCS. Average power rankings comprise 51% of who makes the playoffs.
No? That’s not it? What some random sportswriter says doesn’t matter at all? Can’t be.
They’re a somewhat arbitrary ranking that are fun to look at when they’re fun to look at and worth ignoring when they’re not fun to look at. 🙂
I wasn’t totally joking. What are the criteria and of what use is it? Is it a team “Q” rating (“hey, what’s hot and what’s not”)? If so, why not mix all sports into a power ranking so I know what hat to wear this week? WFNY has reported local teams’ power rankings whether high or middling, and some people actually comment. Don’t respond if this seems dense. Honestly can’t understand either the system or the point.
I can’t help but still be skeptical as well
