“Mission October” a welcomed break from the norm
September 24, 2013WFNY Stats & Info: Jason Giambi’s incredible clutch season
September 24, 2013With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Michael Brantley on second, Jason Giambi hit a 1-1 slider deep into the right field seats for the team’s 11th walk off win of the season.
The Indians had a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth, but closer Chris Perez gave up a pair of solo home runs to put the White Sox on top.
Giambi was pinch hitting for Matt Carson, who entered the game defensively for Michael Bourn. Bourn jammed his wrist sliding into second, and didn’t want to risk it if he would have had to try and throw a runner out at home Terry Francona told the media after the game.
Audio of the home run call by Tom Hamilton available here.

That was… insane. And I was only listening on the radio… I shouldn’t say “ONLY” because Tom Hamilton makes it AWESOME.
So glad I didn’t give up on the Tribe… down to the last out!
Wow. This team is mentally tough. This one should make the Sox go all sleepy and compliant now.
Was looking for Chris Perez in the home plate mobbing. Maybe he was there but I didn’t see him.
That…was…AWESOME. I lost my voice but couldn’t care less. Totally worth it.
He actually was. Credit where credit is due!
Now fill The Jake tomorrow! See you all there.
and smiling, too! Nice catch.
I understand Christophuh may be a little rusty but maybe it’s best that his next appearance is on the road, for everyone’s sake.

that was awesome!!
that was awesome!!
Something feels special about this team. I really think we’re in store for an October to remember. Pitching has been outstanding since the all-star break. If we can have a strong couple weeks from Kipnis and Swisher, the sky is the limit.
I was there. Only 20,000 showed, but the crowd made it sound like the place was sold out. It felt like the 90’s tonight.
perez was bailed out by giambi in a massive way. he is too much of a liability to be in a save situation at this point. smith could fill his role nicely since he is much more consistent. the only thing perez should be doing the rest of the way is giving giambi foot massages.
Sorry, but this is from Giambi’s walk-off HR on July 29th. He never took his helmet off tonight…and Perez was no where to be seen,
You’re right! Swish is beardless… giveaway. My bad. Quick, where’s Waldo? Did he flake?
No problem…seems to be quite the controversy brewing. Someone posted a similar photo on Twitter that showed Perez, but Santana was in catcher’s gear in that pic. Gomes caught tonight. I assume that Perez was already in the showers so he could escape the clubhouse before the media swarm hit.
Meh, I don’t even care. Roll Tribe!
Two word solution to the closer situation: Justin Masterson.
My female roommate thinks I am insane cause I screamed, “Get out!” like 4 times as that Giambi shot flew into the right field stands. She thought there was a rat in the house. I say well worth it. Roll Tribe.

Youtube with Hammy’s call over the video.
Also, I’ll be standing by for the “WHY IS JASON GIAMBI GETTING AT BATS FOR THIS TEAM?!?!?!1” folks. You can form a line to the left. Oh, wait.
Hopefully he was cleaning out his locker
Did anyone bother to tell Perez we won?
Yeah I probably woke up the wife and children (and maybe the neighbors). Do you ever yell so loud it hurts your ears 🙂
still right here. I fully loved the AB last night even as I was cringing while he stepped to the plate. Major kudos to him for coming through.
That’s kind of my point, though. THIS is why he’s getting at bats for this team. Sooner or later, can’t we just accept that this is his role?
At the end of the season, for all the good or ill, he’s won two games via these walk-offs against Chicago. If the Tribe makes the playoffs by a game, all the other stuff doesn’t matter, does it?
(And, no, I’m not trying to pick a fight, especially after a huge win. I just sometimes don’t get all the Giambi hate.)
yeah, I just believe that through the course of the year, if you gave his ABs to a better hitter, then we would have scored more runs, and potentially won more games. He’s killed alot of rallies too.
but, regardless, I’m with you today enjoying that he DID come through last night, we are still in a playoff position with 5 more games to go.
I think that if the Indians make the playoffs this year, well, WELL above anyone’s expectations, then who am I to question having a “clubhouse guy” as the 25th man? Tito knows what he’s doing. Ditched Mark Reynolds but kept Jason Giambi, even though Giambi produces even less. Clearly, this was done for a reason, above and beyond two walk-offs.
I can’t really argue that. I think that the clubhouse presence thing gets overlooked, though. There’s a reason this team is so loose right now. A big part of it is Francona, obviously. But I think that Giambi is also a big factor there, too. I can live with him getting pinch hit ABs.
All this hoopla for a guy hitting .181, he gets lucky and guesses right on a pitch down and in. Typical Cleveland. We shouldnt have needed a walkoff to beat the lowly White Sox. Yeah he came through last night, good for him, but Giambi has still been terrible this season. For just a little more money we probably could have had Thome or somebody better. But not, the Dolans wanted a 42 year old DH for the league minimum. The only reason the Indians are even in the race right now is because of how bad the White Sox are, were 16-2 against Chicago and basically a .500 team against everyone else. Watch Francona trot Perez out there again tonight and he’ll blow a 3 run lead this time, #itscleveland
He was probably drunk anyway.
Smile!
and, if we make the playoffs and do any damage in them, then it’s all worth it no matter who got ABs throughout the year. I wouldn’t risk going back and changing anything at this point for fear of the butterfly effect 🙂
why you mad?
The gambino still has it in him!
Best call in Indians baseball since Joe Tait in July 1974:
“Bosman, big deep breath–right-hander throws… SWING AND A MISS!! IT’S A NO-HITTER!! IT’S A NO-HITTER FOR DICK BOSMAN AND THE INDIANS WIN!! How about that? Dick Bosman throws a no-hitter at the Oakland As and the Indians have won the ball game four to nothing!”
I just wish one of these epic calls would happen in October.
