Rays 4 Indians 0: Missed opportunities send Indians home for the winter
October 3, 2013Despite the loss, this was a game Cleveland needed

“Now, of course, becomes the question of playing time. The Cavs already have a nice young power forward in third-year man Tristan Thompson. Also, with a healthy Bynum and Anderson Varejao, and second-year center Tyler Zeller, there’s no shortage of bodies near the basket. None of that matters, though. Not according to the man who would know.
“It’s a terrific situation for not only Bennett, but for us,” said Cavs coach Mike Brown. “He can come along slowly. If he blossoms early, it’s a bonus for everybody.” [Amico/FSO]

“As many of you may know, Mingo was thrust into that role because of a knee injury to Jabal Sheard sustained the week prior vs. the Vikings. That means that Mingo was asked to be more than just a situational pass rusher vs. the Bengals. He was asked to perform many of the duties required in coach Horton’s defensive system. This was great learning experience and provided Mingo vital playing time, which is valuable. In fact, he played in all 68 snaps ( every defensive snap in the game ) which coincidentally also gave him more opportunities to make mistakes in phases of the game that he hadn’t been asked to execute yet. So, while he wasn’t consistent, he did show the ability to make plays in situations where it mattered by getting his hands on 2 passes, tallying 1 sack, and 1 tackle for loss on a botched snap in the 4th quarter.
According to PFF, Mingo had a poor game. Take a look at the picture below and click on it to enlarge. The first thing that jumps off the page to me, aside from the bright red bar, is that Mingo has a sack in each of his first 3 games in the NFL. Remember, he missed the first week vs. Miami due to a bruised lung.” [Krupka/Dawgs by Nature]

“The quarterback didn’t have any doubts about his head, though. He said he stayed sharp while he was out by doing the same things that backup Kenny Guiton usually does behind him, taking shadow reps and thinking through the game. “I felt pretty good,” Miller said. “I didn’t miss a beat. Every practice I was out there with the guys and going over the coverages. Even though I wasn’t practicing, I made sure I still got my mental reps.”
Five weeks into the season, the Buckeyes have reached this conclusion about their No. 5 – after a preseason filled with praise for his passing, and a nonconference schedule short-circuited by his sprained left MCL, Ohio State is fine. Miller is fine. And maybe he’s even a little fresher at the start of October than he normally would be.” [Lesmerises/Cleveland.com]

Really Donte? “Whitner said he’s changing his name to Donte Hitner. He has been pushing the #LegalHitner hashtag on Twitter (complete with T-shirts bearing the phrase) as the NFL tries to crack down on his hard-hitting style. He wasn’t happy to get a $21,000 fine from the NFL for a hit last week on Rams receiver Chris Givens, and that seems to have given him the final nudge to change his name. Apparently this name change is serious, too. He asked his mom for permission and everything.” [Schwab/Shutdown Corner]

Where are the Tribe links? Great season, nothing to hang our heads on. If someone told us we would have to go 21-6 in september to make the playoffs i would have laughed. Great run, just couldn’t get a clutch hit last night.
I don’t want to have to listen to the entire podcast because I can’t stand Cousin Sal, so anybody know at what point they talk about Cleveland?

Where is Les Carpenter getting this stuff?
“British fans aren’t like ours. Their sports passions run deep, often from birth.”
“Those who love football here have already adopted their teams…..The road was packed. And it wasn’t just packed with wayward housewives
on a shopping spree, but packed with thousands of Europeans in
officially sanctioned NFL team jerseys. There were Cardinals and Rams
and 49ers and Broncos. Someone even wore a Browns jersey“
Oh great it’s almost basketball season!
I liked the strike shortened NBA season that started after Christmas. That was the perfect amount of NBA
Great stretch indeed you can’t fault them for beating the dregs of MLB the problem was that stopped when TB came to town and you saw the result. It was a great overachieving season. Now comes the test. Lets see what ownership and the front office does this winter. They had a franchise saving/turning winter a year ago and basically did nothing after it. Clearly the team has shortcomings the most prominent being lack of power. You saw what Delmon Young did with one swing. This guy has made the trek from multiple teams only to end up back in Tampa where it started. The Indians need to spend on not only a power hitter but probably a 3B as well as another proven bullpen arm. I didn’t mention SP because if they can convince Ubaldo or Kazmir or heck both to return with Bauer still around Tomlin possibly and Carrasco they are deep. Now lets see whether ownership and front office realizes they have to spend again or if they go back to their couch pillow turning over looking for penny ways.
Go to a soccer game in the US and you will see the same thing. I don’t understand it myself…like when i see people in Buckeye’s jerseys at Browns games. Just because it is the same sport doesn’t mean it makes sense
Honestly it didn’t bother me either but hopefully the Cavaliers are legitimate this season. If they are it will help. That being said 82 games is a lot but we’ll see what happens.
Looks like it’s right around the 4 minute mark.
Thanks. Will have to check it out.
Josh Freeman was just released by Tampa Bay. Interesting.
