According to Ken Rosenthal on Twitter the Cleveland Indians have sent outfielder Drew Stubbs to the Colorado Rockies. It is not yet known what the Indians got in return.
#Rockies acquiring OF Drew Stubbs from #Indians, sources tell me and @jonmorosi.

Stubbs, like newly acquired Brandon Barnes, better vs. LHPs. Plan still would be for CarGo to play CF. #Rockies collecting athletic OFers.

For the Indians, this cures what could have been a logjam in the outfield. The Indians have Michael Bourn, Michael Brantley, Ryan Raburn, Nick Swisher and added David Murphy.
When that Murphy deal was rumored, Jacob said the following about the Indians’ outfield situation.
It’s a bit of a surprising deal for the Tribe, who already have over $30 million committed to outfielders Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn and Ryan Raburn for 2014. Incumbent right fielder Drew Stubbs is a potential non-tender candidate, as he’s expected to garner about $3.8 million in arbitration, per MLBTradeRumors.
Murphy has averaged 130 games for the Texas Rangers over the last six seasons. During this time, he’s averaged a .272/.335/.436 line with 1.7 WAR per year. He’s been primarily a left fielder and had by far his worst season in 2013, batting just .220/.282/.374 in 142 contests. He earned $5.775 million in his final arbitration season this past year. A lefty hitter, he seems to be a good fit in a time-share with fellow veteran Raburn in right.
We will obviously update this when we find out what the Indians got in return.

Not really sad to see Stubbs go. I’ll miss the athleticism but if this guy couldn’t succeed under Francona, good luck to the Rockies. Stubbs is a perfect platoon candidate given his splits but while guys like Raburn, Aviles, and even Giambi thrived last year, this guy regressed even from his poor 2012 numbers.
I’ll be curious, though, to see what his power numbers look like in the thin air. I’d set the over/under on HR’s at about 15. But for BA, I wouldn’t go over .230.
Coors isn’t as crazy since they put the humidor in back in ’06 (?). Think it’s still a hitters park, thoughI’m not sure how much power the rarefied air really supplies now.
WHO DID WE GET, ROSENTHAL? WHO?!?!!
I’m going to sit here and not do any work to you tell me.
Oh…. Josh Outman… thanks
Gotta love a pitcher named “Outman.” He’s an outman, man. Need an out? He’s your guy.
Ruh roh Nick Hadadone….
Hmm, very curious trade. It’s not like I think Stubbs is a world beater, but Josh Outman? I hope we also got a bag o’ balls and some Funions to be named later.
Just wondering why go through the process of picking up Stubbs’ option only to dump him on the dirt cheap. The only thing I can think of is that the market was way softer than they imagined for a guy of his ilk, and they didn’t want to get stuck paying him $4M.
Why go through the process? Because Outman is better than nothing, especially considering the lefty situation in the pen last year.
Looks like Outman is a lefty specialist. And cost controlled. And we shed a bunch of salary.
I really don’t think there was much interest in Stubbs. He’s a platoon player who can’t cut it defensively in CF and doesn’t have the power to be a true corner guy.
And Mickey Callaway is a magician.
Pretty sweet name for a relief pitcher, though…
Question is, will the Indians allow Outman to use his preferred mechanics?
True – the HR numbers have declined. The rub is, that due to the deep fences and spacious power alleys, there is a lot of ground to cover – hence the desire for athletic outfielders. Probably should have kept Fowler, but that’s a discussion for the Rockies blog.
Yeah if he’s going to cut it against lefties along with Marc Prezpoloskizyydfydosfyusd (and we haven’t had two solid LHRPs in a lonnnng time), then I guess I’m ok with it.
Now we need to trade for Luke Homer and Kyle Thirdbaseman.
OutMan, AhhhhhhAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
Fighter of the RunMan AhhhhhhhhhhaAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
Champion of the Pen AhhhhhhhhhhhAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
He’s a master of the long out,
No homeruns for anyone!
I kind of agree though. I expected more from Stubbs than a situational relief pitcher.
I don’t know much about Outman though. Looks like he use to start. And the Rockies (and Coors) sort of have a rep for ruining pitchers. Maybe the Indians think there’s some upside there?
His ERA+ in the NL was 76, but 112 (with Oakland) in the AL. Righties kill the guy but I don’t see him facing many of those in Cleveland, and with Scrabble already on the roster, I doubt this guy will see anything past the 6th inning (particularly if Tito goes with the 9-man pen again).
Basically a LOOGY, and he’s got to be better than Rich Hill.
Everybody stop. We’re done. Nothing will top this. Go home. We’ll see you tomorrow.
What do the Indians care where he takes his car for repairs and service?
Totally agree. Hill was crapola. And anybody that might prevent the mouthbreather Nick Hadagone from lurching in from the pen carrying a can of gasoline—is good people to me. Team Outman.
#homonymhumor
I’m a guy interested in Outman’s peculiar story and the best you can come up with is a lame attempt at humor.
Are you indicative of the average Indians’ fan?
Pretty much.
Are you indicative of the average humorless fellow?
Can you then point me to an informed Indians fan?
I love humor. When you find some let me know.
yeah, I liked his defense, but he was a speed guy who couldn’t even bunt. I will not miss the despair I felt every time he came up in a crucial spot.
1 out though. So, he has to be a situational reliever. You cannot start a guy who can only get 1 out.
dangit. Chisenhall just changed his name to Lonnie Baseball too.
Aw snap. Burn!!
His name’s “mgbode,” but he kinda likes my humor.
You could also try “Steve.” He doesn’t like my humor at all.
“njO” regularly knocks it out of the park (but he also just cracked a joke, so . . .).
Stay away from Shamrock. He’s likes the Sox. He also has a bad sense of humor.
Glad you came for seriousness. I was just here for entertainment. Welcome! Hope you stay. (I’ll try to stay out of your way, but I’m kinda obtrusive.)
Looking at his overall numbers (though really small sample size), he doesn’t look like a guy you want starting (Oakland before Colorado). High WHIP in both cases, much lower SO when starting, BB about the same.
He’s a cheap RP to replace the guys we lost. Nothing more.
he prefers wizard.
And for the record, it wasn’t an “attempt.” It was a bona fide act, a completed crime; though you could still get me on the lesser included offense.
Umm Cromulent won’t find slurs about the New York Mets’ sexual orientation very funny either! (I kid, I kid…I get it)
they are “out of network”
If he likes his mechanic, he can keep . . .
No, I won’t go there.
see: Bauer, Trevor
and, we keep it light around here. no reason to get all huffy. Merry Christmas 🙂
I know. Just saying he has it in his background.
Strangely, I felt better with him up then Cabrera because he could sometimes leg out a hit and did not hit into many DPs.
Socks and stirrups! Nice.

What’s his peculiar story?
Good summary here:
hardballtimesDOTcom/main/article/how-josh-outman-really-wants-to-throw-a-basebal/
Trevor is great, but he’s not going to know the answer to this question.
Which is not to say he doesn’t know about Outman’s history. Thanks to his association with Kyle Boddy Trevor likely knows the story.
Peculiar and sad story really: He was badly burnt in an accident and left by the lava for nearly dead. The doctors worked on him tirelessly, but unfortunately he has to be hooked up to electronics to breath and has to wear a black helmet to stay alive. Poor guy needs constant technical care, and Garry goes and makes an insensitive joke about his mechanics.
Huh. Crazy. I’m surprised teams weren’t more open to it. Hope the Indians are. It’s not like he’s been so successful with a traditional delivery.
Precisely. And you should check out Josh’s dad’s site. Very interesting guy. He had two sons and managed to get both into pro ball. An iconoclast who has some ideas worth hearing.
Well, I know Trevor Bauer has some unique methods in terms of conditioning that the team was open to. Not sure if they’d feel the same way about something as important as delivery though. We shall see.

the Indians picked up Bauer and were very willing, open to allowing Bauer to train in a manner that he saw fit.
