WFNY Roundtable: Barkevious Mingo and Expectations
December 20, 2013The Tribe Walk-offs – WFNY Top 10 Cleveland Sports Stories: No. 8
December 20, 2013Former Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow is running his mouth as his current Jets squad prepares for the Cleveland Browns this weekend. He has a lot of time to talk, probably because he doesn’t really practice anymore given the state of his knees.
“Who’s going to guard me over there? Nobody,” Winslow said. “That’s how I feel, and that’s how I play the game. That’s how you gotta play the game. You’ve just got to play the game, and that’s all.”
The 6-8 Jets are talking trash, and why shouldn’t they as they look down at the 4-10 Browns coming into their stadium this weekend? Sure, the Jets have lost four of five games coming into this weekend, but the Browns have lost their last five and eight out of their last nine.
Winslow has served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s rules on PEDs this season, but he’s played pretty well. In ten games so far this season he has 27 receptions for 319 yards. Not at all bad production for a 30-year-old tight end who has had numerous knee surgeries over the years.
We’ll see if the Browns can cover him this weekend, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he didn’t make some catches against a Browns linebacking corps that has struggled in coverage at times.

Well the thing about Kellen Winslow Jr is that he’s a %#$!ing “soldier”, so he’s only interested in a position with the Army. No one can make him join the Coast “Guard”. You have to pay attention to the slang these youngsters are using these days.
Just put a motorcycle on the other side of the LOS and he won’t get very far.
that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game that’s how I play the game
You almost have to feel sorry for this cement-head with the outsized ego and sense of entitlement. He’s on his last legs, so to speak, and soon he will be completely irrelevant. Then for the rest of his D-List life he can deeply regret all the stupid things he did that might well have kept him out of the Hall of Fame and thus ensured him at least a little life-long relevance.
Enjoy the attention while you still can, Soldier. It won’t be long before nobody cares what you say.
They won’t need to cover him. He’ll “Olay” the block which he’s assigned like he always does and they’ll get to the quarterback before he even has a chance to be in position.
This is just an athlete psyching himself up for a game. There should be absolutely nothing controversial about this. It’s just that Winslow is dumb enough to say it into a mic. I sincerely doubt the Browns players care what he has to say, and they’re probably telling themselves and each other the same thing — “nobody on the Jets is going to get open against us”. I mean, if Winslow really thought he could be easily defended he wouldn’t have lasted as long as he has. Confidence is everything when you are playing sports at a high level.
People love to hate Winslow for the brash talk and the idiotic motorcycle thing, but frankly he plays his ass off on Sundays and he’s had a much longer and more successful career than most expected, especially after the accident. In my book he deserves credit.
This week, I don’t care about draft position, I don’t care about who is the QB, and I don’t care about the injures. We need to beat the !#@$#& Jets!
He hasn’t been relevant in years so I guess he has to make news somehow.
I’m not sure I agree with any of what you said.
The Browns will certainly care about what he said.
He hasn’t had a remarkable career – he was overrated, then not rated at all. That’s why he averages less than 3 catches per game.
In my book, the only credit he deserves is in ruining his own career. With interest.
I’m pretty sure I agree with everything you said. It is super fun to bash Winslow, but it seemed pretty clear to me (from the limited snippet) that he was talking about his own attitude and wasn’t really saying anything about the Browns.
Golly gee, we Clevelandlers love to be offended, don’t we?
“but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he didn’t make some catches against a Browns defense that has struggled to cover any tight ends for most of the last decade.”
FTFY
Why do we insist on hearing and seeing everything as an offense or slight?
Much ado about nothing.
What do you mean by that?
You gotta problem with that?
Let’s take it outside.
No way. You’re a REAL soldier.
This has to be the only city where idiotic athlete’s quotes are still presumed interesting for us long after they’re gone. Maybe because the Browns are yet again neck deep in boring late-season suckitude there is flat-out desperation to create an interesting story line.
Last Sunday on the way to the game I was telling some younger fans how much more exciting the holidays are when the Browns are heading for the playoffs. It’s such a great, fun time. Songs on the radio, big papier mache helmets on downtown statues, signs all over the place, people in an even more festive mood. It’s just great!
I didn’t even know Winslow was still in the league. The guy has been a non entity for the past 6-7 years.
Guess I just lost the “Kellen Winslow is not still in the NFL” bet I made with myself this morning.
Kellen? Winslow?
he does have 10 catches in the last 5 games. #beastmode #warrior

I had to click on the headline just to find out what team he was on these days.
