The Diff: Reviewing Indians pitching moves this offseason
January 8, 2014Marla Ridenour on the state of the Browns, plus the Luol Deng trade – WFNY Podcast – 2014-01-08
January 8, 2014Per Paul Lukas of the Uni Watch Blog, the Cleveland Indians have changed their “primary” logo to the Block C that has adorned navy, red and special edition hats over the last several seasons.
Indians changing primary logo to the block-C. No change to uniforms, Wahoo still on home cap, sleeves. pic.twitter.com/0EEopJ3ph2
— Paul Lukas (@UniWatch) January 8, 2014
Lukas, who has been one of the web’s more outspoken anti-Chief Wahoo voices, does add that the highly discussed cartoon logo will still be on Tribe’s jersey sleeves as well as the home cap, leaving us wondering exactly what—if anything—the difference is between this and seasons past. This appears to merely be a semantic adjustment made wherein the Indians’ television and promotions (and website-based advertising) will feature the “Block C” on a national level rather than Chief Wahoo.
Update: The Indians tell WFNY that their usage of all of their logos—Block C, Chief Wahoo, and the script “Indians”—will remain identical to 2013 and that all three are featured within the 2014 MLB stylebook.

Steps in the right direction are at least steps in the right direction.
Ugh.
I mean, if we are going to change, then can we not change to something so common and boring? Let’s just do a complete reboot (new name, new colors).
There’s no flash, but I’d rather have some classic and staid than going bold and looking like the Marlins.
I still think it’s silly/stupid, but whatever. I’ve noticed almost every MLB team has switched to a “letter” primary logo, if I’m not mistaken. MLB’s standings uses a letter logo.
What’s interesting to me is if basically they will be wearing a Wahoo cap at home where fans see it and a C cap on the road where other fans see it.
That’s how it was last year, and the article says that will be the same. There doesn’t seem to be any changes other than an official recognition. The block C has been used as the primary logo already, now it’s just getting the official stamp of approval.
If they’re going to scrap Chief Wahoo, they should just do it already. It seems inevitable, and doing this step by step only means we get to have this discussion/argument every time another incremental step is taken, which continually draws attention to the matter.
I don’t like it I understand they are quietly fazing the Chief out but I just don’t like it. Looks bland, blah, boring.
I missed your comment but echo it. Except the new name. I wouldn’t mind seeing a new look even colors anything other then that boring block C.
The Marlins who have more championships and somehow continue to come up with more prospects then the Indians despite nuking their payroll every few years?
Just rip the band aid off already agreed.
Sigh. Don’t change Shammy, don’t ever change.
I didn’t even realize I had replied to you but oh well. Anyways last night when me and my BFF Andrew Schnitkey were kickin’ it at da club he agreed to allow me one maybe two shots daily around here. That was one, I just couldn’t help myself. I always liked the Marlins original colors though well until 1997 that is of course.
Oh you can tell everybody…go ahead and tell everybody…I’m the man, I’m the man, I’m the mmmmmman!!!!
I agree with Calcaterra that this is better. I think you’ll have a much bigger outlash if they did it in one big swoop. I think they just want to show up one spring with no Wahoo’s anywhere in sight and hope everyone forgets to ask.
The Chief will never be forgotten, never!
The Browns offense is jealous of how effectively the Indians are continually able to punt on this issue…
Steve, do you mean “A step in the right direction of MY opinion”? PC bull and kowtowing, nothing more. In protest, I will be going home tonight and play “Cowboys and Indians” with my children. Guess who the “good guys” will be?
The Indians all the way baby!!!!
if it was unique (NYY or StL logos), then I would agree.
but, it’s not.
Hey…maybe the Chief on the orange helmet?
Dude?

A step in the right direction for race relations. And I think calling “PC bull” is synonymous for “I don’t have an argument I can defend” and suggesting that this would be “kowtowing” is flat out insulting to anyone who actually had to act subservient against their will.
I get that much. I’d be fine with something unique, but I’d rather err on this side than on the Miami side.
you mean the Brooklyn Dodgers logo with different colors?
Yeah, I hate the block C. For me, it’s too close to the Cubs and Cincinnati. But then again, I was one of the nine people who liked the script I.
yes, I don’t want the Marlins logo, but there is a vast sea between the 2 extremes.
I also like the script I as it is unique.

Are you serious? If this is about race relations, which it clearly is not, then the INDIANS should have changed their logo and name years ago. And since that has not happened and the only ones complaining are the media types (how many native Americans are in the media on TV?), maybe the INDIANS should be shunned from baseball forever and their owners sent to a correction facility. Come on Steve, this is complete BULL. Do you think you are all-knowing and above everyone? Or are you trying to help stir the pot of racism on false grounds? Where is the racism here? How does it affect the lives of Indians negatively? It doesn’t Steve. What about the Fighting Irish? It’s celebratory not degrading.

thats just too bad
maybe i’m anti-pc here, but my old school big chief indians hat was on its last legs and i got a new one on eBay a couple months ago .. the BIG chief logo, not the mini one that they’ve made official in the last few years

-Yes
I’d rather have the script i then the block c!
If you want to take a step in the right direction give them back their lands. I think that more then a logo or a name on a professional sports franchise will go a lot further. I don’t count casinos either.
In an attempt to address all your points
– Agree that the name/logo should have been changed years ago, glad we’re on the same page
-The media isn’t the only group complaining, and even if so, I don’t begin to comprehend how that leads to the second part of the sentence
-Definitely don’t think I’m all knowing, which is why I like to have these discussions and have everyone be forced to defend their opinion. The more facts we can bring to the table, the better for everyone.
-Where is the racism? Seriously? The exaggerated facial features, the nonsensical “language” (Ki Yi Wangh Woop
), the reference to “Indian weakness” when talking about Sockalexis, you don’t see that?
-In regards to the Fighting Irish, I see a big difference between a group stereotyping themselves versus stereotyping another group.
Are you one of the truthers that thinks Sockalexis and the logo are intertwined? It’s a cartoon for crying out loud. Do me a favor and look up Indian casinos, owned by Indians, and check out some of their very own logos. I guess you would call them racists too?
I know that Sockalexis and the logo are not intertwined, it’s just a ruse by the team to drum up better PR. And again, in regards to any casino logos, I see a vast difference between stereotyping yourself and stereotyping someone else. Do you not see that?
You are making my point Steve. If someone creates their own likeness which they obviously approve of since they created it, how is it stereotyping if It’s not or never was used in a derogatory way, it’s celebrating it. This is not adding up here.
Note: U-ND was founded by French missionaries and the Fighting Irish name was picked due to the popular bare-knuckled boxing circuit in the area at the time that typically featured poor irishmen.
So, ND is similar to FSU as the object of the mascot has adapted the school as their own (the Seminole tribe has become intertwined with the school). I agree that is an important distinction, but is different than what you stated.
I see your problem. You think the Indians are stereotyping themselves. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. they are embracing their heritage.
That is a one of the rumors, but doesn’t seem to be the most likely. They were clearly referring to themselves.
Sigh, alright Jay, whatever. You can use whatever racial stereotypes you need to get through the day, I won’t stop you.
Steve, When Notre Dame was founded there were hardly any Irish there. This is a fact. The fighting Irish name was a slur, whereas the Indians name and mascot was not.
Just change the whole damn thing. No point to keep fighting a battle we are going to lose. It makes me sad that non Clevelanders are going to dictate what history says about an iconic piece of my past and my culture but it is what it is. Growing up in the 90s when I see the Chief I think of sooo many things that are not Native Americans first. What a bummer.
Yawn, thanks even though it isn’t a racial stereotype! It’s nice that people are so passionate about race relations as long as it’s not generic. I just wish they would do some homework about the history before shouting RACISM every step of the way!
My idea is to “officially” retire Chief Wahoo but keep him around on “throwback” memorabilia. What a potential cash cow that could be!
Yeah what’s up with that – the mini Chief Wahoo just looks awful & cheap. But your hat’s a beaut!
white people are the worst
NO ONE CARES, really no one cares. its 100% manufactured fake PC white people nonsense.
the indians logo is cool. tribe is cool. indian people couldnt care less about it
script I here too.
The Seminole tribe is an interesting animal, though, in that it is not technically a unique ethnic group but a conglomerated association of the remnants of other native tribes (and a not insignificant input of white “European” outcasts (outlaws?)). The acceptance by the tribe of the FSU association is therefore *somewhat* different than the response of other groups to more general ethnic representations. Not saying your point isn’t valid (it is), but I’m not sure it’s the best analog for the situation here.
(The Irish distinction is spot on, though.)
Yeah, but “Cleveland Browns” has got to be the WORST logo ever for the Indians!
