A wooden case of emotion
February 6, 2014Dan Gilbert needs to abandon playoff goals for this season
February 6, 2014The Cavaliers lost in embarrassing fashion last night to the Los Angeles Lakers, and today the top man in the front office lost his job. According to Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers have relieved General Manager Chris Grant of his duties.

Cleveland's well-respected assistant GM, David Griffin, favorite to become Cavs' interim GM, sources tell Yahoo. Team officials meeting now.

“I would like to thank Chris Grant for his eight and a half years of service with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the last three and a half as General Manager. Chris always conducted himself with class, integrity and was motivated by what he believed was right for the organization. We wish Chris and his family the best in the years to come,” said Dan Gilbert Majority Owner of the Cavaliers.
“This has been a very difficult period for the franchise. We have severely underperformed against expectations. Just as this is completely unacceptable to our loyal and passionate fan base, season ticket holders and corporate partners, it is also just as unacceptable to our ownership group. I can assure everyone who supports and cares about the Cleveland Cavaliers that we will continue to turn over every stone and explore every possible opportunity for improvement to shift the momentum of our franchise in the right direction. There is no one in our entire organization who is satisfied with our performance, and to say that we are disappointed is an understatement. We all know the great potential of our young talent, seasoned veterans, as well as our recent all-star addition. We believe a change in leadership was necessary to establish the best possible culture and environment for our entire team to flourish.Â
There is no move, nor any amount of capital investment, we will not make if we believe it will improve our chances of competing and winning in this league for both the short and long term. The fans of this great city have invested too much time, money and effort for the kind of product we have recently delivered to them. This must change,” concluded Gilbert.
Grant replaced Danny Ferry as GM on June 4, 2010. He was charged with the task of rebuilding the Cavaliers after the departure of LeBron James. Since taking over the Cavaliers have gone 80-199.
âMy entire focus the past eight years has been on trying to build a team that can contend and win and provide Cleveland fans the success that they deserve,â said Grant. âI have a tremendous appreciation for the players that are here and the coaches that I have worked with, as well as our front office. I thank them for all of their dedication and commitment to the Cavaliers.â

First, I wouldn’t worry about signing any elusive elite player in free agency. I would do everything I can to draft them, but they are not coming here in free agency (especially now that teams have learned how to use sign-n-trades more efficiently. see: Andre Iguodala).
Second, we need a culture change. Golden State realized they needed one a couple of years ago, so they transformed their team with 3 major moves (and some minor ones): (1) Hired Mark Jackson (2) Traded for Andrew Bogut (3) Traded for Andre Iguodala (though a sign-n-trade).
So, we need some defensive anchor players. I don’t think Tyson Chandler is walking through that door, but I’m going to kick the tires on a bunch of possibly under-appreciated guys:
Kyle Lowry/T.Ross
Omer Asik (once proven to be healthy/in-shape)
Tony Allen
Avery Bradley/Rajon Rondo
Miles Plumlee
Tiago Splitter
Mike Conley
DeMarcus Cousins (likely too late for them to consider)
Pekovic (and I’d try to steal Kevin Martin)
among others
David Griffin will be the interim GM!

Serious question: What has Mike Brown done well this season.
– develop young players?
– improve on court product?
– defense? offense?
I was in favor of hiring him but I cannot think of anything that he has touched that hasn’t turned to poop.
That’s fine and dandy, but what about the fat heads? Are you going to keep the fat heads?

one of the things I would do is dangle Kyrie to a defensive team to see if they bite. is Memphis willing to lose Conley/Allen/E.Davis? they’d have Kyrie’s offense to go with their interior defense, add some parts and we could potentially have a match.
I would be upfront with Kyrie about it as well. I would merely note that I do not want to trade him, but I also need leaders who will help us have the energy and focus that turns us into a real contending program. Is he willing to lead those efforts? If so, then I want him a Cav for life. If not, then I have no choice but to dangle my best assets to find those guys.
who doesn’t like fatheads? they stick to your wall, then you can move them to another wall whenever you like. those are fantastic. only someone with no concern for the fan well-being would think of not keeping the fatheads.
Since the biggest crack ay Grant is his talent evaluation and failing to make the most of the team’s multiple recent high draft picks – I hope this means Gilbert is anticipating being at the top of the lotto again and not letting Grant mess it up.

I love pussycats!!! mgbode forgot to mention Golden State also added David Lee via FA then went on to draft Stephon Curry, Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes.

in addition to scouring for trades, I would also be scouring for a coaching replacement.
I’d obviously consider Karl & Hollins if they were willing to listen. And, there are a bunch of highly qualified candidates who are assts. But, I wouldn’t hesitate to hire a college coach either. I like the guys who do the most with the least and get defensive effort out, so guys like Tony Bennett (UVa), Mike Cronin (UCinci), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State) and my first choice from the college ranks would definitely be Gregg Marshall (Wichita State).

Lets be clear no one ever said fatheads were not being kept after all the owner of the Cavaliers also owns them. So lets be clear and upfront on this little fact.

Just like the Browns the financial flexibility along with a possible draft asset of a lottery pick should be highly sought by prospective GMs!!!
’11/’12 Ws went 23-43 despite having Curry & Lee & Klay (and Monta Ellis and Nate Robinson). they realized that all-offense with no defensive effort would not be enough to get the job done in the NBA.
’12/’13 Ws went 47-35. that is the type of transformation that I want for the Cavs. yes, they drafted Barnes (and he helped that defense some). they also added Landry & Bogut. even though Bogut didn’t play a full season, he was being lauded as having a distinct help off the court on the foundation of their defense. jettisoning Monta/Nate also seemed to help.
were they satisfied with those improvements? not in the least, which is why they found a way to get Iguodala last offseason and are one of the true contending teams now.
please, you were going to withhold them from the fans when they needed them the most. they are merely a toy when things are going well. they are a reason to go to the games when the times are rough. know your fanbase.

I’m all for a big man but I prefer one that isn’t one dimensional unless that one dimension is phenomenal.
The time for toys and games are over son the people have spoken they want wins and they want them sooner rather then later!

Mind you my avatar picture of a sandwich is a little old, but it’s still valid. đ
When did Randy Lerner start owning the Cavs?
Great now I’m hungry do they deliver to Kinsman Avenue? I won’t even ask for a royalty for you getting to advertise. That’s how I roll!
Surely there’s a place for Roger Brown in your administration?
Grant hasn’t been negotiating in a vacuum – I’m sure there will be continuity in trade talks with other teams
I still don’t really understand how Chris Grant can be at that much of fault here. Trade-wise, he did excellently in acquiring assets. Draft-wise is where fans get upset. Kyrie, Tristan, Dion, Zeller, Bennett, and Karasev. Hindsight is 20/20, so who exactly would you have drafted in place of these players? Drummond? Barnes? Noel? Valanciunas? Kawhi Leonard? I think he did all he could to get talent on the team, and shouldn’t really be blamed for terrible draft classes with one or two difference-makers. He could have picked Derrick Williams *shudders*.
I do however blame him for the hiring of Mike Brown. Two moves that should be made in the next couple weeks would be to fire Brown and trade Dion.
5:44 pm ET I have withdrawn my name for the position of GM with the Cleveland Cavaliers after listening to Dan Gilbert’s press conference today. I don’t have the time to awaken him from the delusion he’s currently in nor desire having to teach him basketball. Fixing this team starting with the head coach would present a big enough challenge.
I listened to his press conference and Gilbert is clearly delusional. He spent time talking about how much talent this team had and how they weren’t this bad led by a HC who had never missed the playoffs and so on and so forth. Funny he fired the guy who assembled that team he spent all the time talking up as a way to “change things up.” Yea thanks but no thanks.
I withdrew I wish mgbode luck if he’s chosen. God knows he’d need it.
I just heard Gilbert’s press conference from today and he’s delusional. I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat it now: the biggest problem with Cleveland sports is ownership and after hearing what I heard today I believe what I just said even more.
gotta have brass Huevos to play in this league
A 5 year contract doesn’t hurt either!
That press conference he gave completely turned me off. On one hand he said he thought the team would be active at the trade deadline then on the other he talked about how much he liked the talent on the roster and believed they could still do better. He sort of backed Brown but all of this came during a press conference announcing he had fired the architect of the team he liked. Um okay.
Hence the “open up the wallet”. For the right price, every job is a dream job.
