The Olympics have begun, and there’s a divide at WFNY. Some people love the Olympics and some don’t really care that much at all. We don’t know where you all stand, but this is how we shake out.
Love the olympics. It’s the only thing on TV in our house.
A little Cliff Clavin note (this in regard to Scott’s comment about the biathalon): It’s a little-known fact that the olympics originated as a venue to showcase individual warrior’s combat skills: javelin throwing, wrestling, running, etc. Indeed, even the modern olympics showcased much of these skills. The modern pentathalon continues this showcase, with fencing, pistol shooting, and equestrian (Cavalry! Garryowen!). Indeed, General Patton competed in the 1912 olympics in this event (the first time it was ever held). The biathalon is just a continuation of that tradition, as it showcases the skills necessary for winter infantry soldiering (at least as it stood when the modern winter games began in 1924). Nothing bizarre about it at all. And it’s my favorite event.
There you go. Free knowledge. And on a Monday, even.
I love the Olympics. Downhill skiing is fantastic. So are the cute little tushies of the women figure skaters. I love the hockey, the boblsled, the luge, the ski jump, and the speed skating. I even love cross country skiing and the biathlon (someone once said that if biathlon is a sport, then armed robbery in Duluth should be a sport).
Of course, I watch these sports only during the Olympics. The rest of the time, I couldn’t care less. But for two weeks every four years, I’m a five-ringed snow- and ice-head.
I used to love the Olympics. That has eroded over time and it’s because I have let the foolishness of the IOC interfere with my enjoyment of the event. I wish that I hadn’t and perhaps I can overcome it someday. But, the removal of wrestling from the summer olympics was really the last straw for me. It’ll be on from time to time, and I’ll take a gander at the medal counts a few times, but I really do not care much anymore.
I prefer my Olympics be of the summer variety, as there are events involved that I’ve actually participated in, making the performances of the world’s elites that much more impressive to me. That said, there are certain things I will make a point to catch whenever they ultimately air: hockey, skeleton, and curling. Bobsled and speed skating can be quite entertaining, but I’m not necessarily planning my tv time around them. And nothing beats the sense of patriotism that comes with international competition.

Not to mention that Bode flamed out in the downhill yesterday.
Two words…speed skaters.
A minor blip as Bode’s legacy is secure. As are all with that name.

The World Cup can’t get here soon enough.
