LeBron James is rightfully jealous of Miguel Cabrera’s new contract
March 31, 2014Video: Dion’s buzzer beater NBA’s play of the week
March 31, 2014As they did for the start of the football season, Facebook revealed a map of the country according to their MLB allegiance. The social media giant gives each county in the country to a team based on the number of ‘likes’ of the official team page it has. It isn’t an exact science of course, but considering Facebook’s reach it is probably as accurate as any other measure.
The Indians dominated northeast Ohio as would be expected. They do not own the majority of Ohio however, as the Reds’ reach spread throughout the middle of the state and into Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia.
The Indians dominate a smaller total area than many of their small market counterparts.
The more interesting thing to me was to compare the map of baseball fan loyalty above, to the map of NFL fan loyalty from last fall below.
According to Facebook, the Indians own more counties than the Browns. The Pittsburgh influence in baseball isn’t as strong in the eastern part of the state, nor do the Pirates get a boost from the Findlay area as the Steelers do because of the Ben Roethlisberger connection.
Happy opening day.

“Not an exact science”
You mean like that pocket of Pittsburgh Pirates fans in western Oklahoma?! I mean it could be a settlement or a cult compound or something…
It pains me to discover that for most of my life I’ve lived in Yankee country.
The horror…
Fugitive pirates.
I love that the Mets and Blue Jays own no counties. Way to go Mets!
I live in Western PA and there aren’t even any Pirates fans here, let alone anywhere else in the country
What is Facebook?
Why would there be Toronto Blue Jay interest in the US eh?
Toledo has always been a suburb of Detroit. A little surprised to see Cinci’s reach so far north.
A’s don’t even carry Alameda County….Hilarious!
The Spankees probably don’t carry Vegas for long, It really is Dodger land out here.
I wonder how much the Mud Hens being the Tigers’ AAA affiliate plays into that too.
I lived right by Lima for five years. That is very accurate. Easily 2 Reds fans for every Indian fan I found there.
The Mets own Flushing. That’s about it.
@Natedawg86:disqus I can see the Buffalo area digging them some Jays.
As a lifelong NY suburbanite and die hard Mets fan, I’m not surprised. When is the draft again?
Toledo was a Tigers town long before the Mud Hens became a Tigers affiliate. The ironic thing is there are fewer Tiger fans in Toledo now than there were when the affiliation began in 1987.
My guess is it’s another way for government to spy on its citizens legally. Twitter has much more anonymity.
Debatable. Unless of course you intended that to be a pun.
Once this is cross referenced by population density, it doesn’t look so bad for the Tribe.
Also does anyone else find it odd that there are people out side of the Tampa/St. Pete area who are Rays fans?
