Kosar out of television booth for preseason Browns games
April 23, 2014April attendance, Akron arena and antagonizing alliterations… While We’re Waiting
April 24, 2014The NFL released the schedules for all 32 teams on Wednesday night. The Cleveland Browns will open the season at Pittsburgh on September 7. The home opener will be in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
The Browns have an early bye week in Week 4.
Week 6 is the Steelers game at FirstEnergy meaning they are done with the division rivals before the halfway point in the season.

Honestly, looking at this schedule the browns legitimately could luck into 9 wins. I dont feel like the Bucs, Jags, Texans,or Raiders are better than the browns. Assume they split the division, which doesn’t seem too difficult this year as the ravens and Steelers are still on a down swing, all they have to do is squeak a win over Indy, Atlanta, New Orleans or Carolina and stumble into a playoff talk. Obviously, its all easier said than done, buy I’m of the opinion this team isn’t too far off from being a ‘good’ NFL team and not your regular “5 win rebuilding season” team, especially if they get this draft done right.
Looks like I may be heading up to Atlanta…

I Like!

Wait wait wait…what could anyone possibly base a W-L prediction on? Who is playing QB in this scenario? Hoyer on crutches?
So they put a division game on Thursday night. Is this NFL Network, or does CBS start carrying Thursday games this season?
My initial thoughts at a glance here go something like this:
-0-3 headed into an early bye is going to make for some angry folks. I mean, we could luck into one against the ratbirds or yinzers, but…yikes. 1-2 would feel like a victory.
-Worst. Bye Week. Ever.
-Hooray for Sundays at 1:00pm. I know primetime games are a sign of a) past success or b) higher expectations, plus the glam factor, so we should want to see them more. But primetime games also mean having to drag myself into work the next day or missing part of the game, so I love avoiding them. And 4:00pm games are the devil for a whole host of reasons.
-Feeling ok about TEN, JAX, TB, BUF, and maaaaybe OAK. Splitting our division is probably best case. 8-8 feels like the ceiling. Easier to get a feel once we know just who will be under center and what pieces we add in the draft eleventy texa$ days from now, but the pessimist in me can easily see 6-10 staring back at us from this schedule.
-Opening the season on the road: good, given past history. Opening in the burgh? Ugh.
-On the road around turkey day and Xmas means either a September home game or nothing for yours truly this year. Disappointing. Might need to head over to Jacksonville in October though.
obv hoyer is going to be great but the learning curve for rookies matthews and jean-baptiste lead to a slow start.
I like your style.
The Thursday games will be on both, I believe.
Vegas has the over-under at 6.5, for what it’s worth.
but isnt that line like +200?
ie you have to bet 200 to win 100, ie vegas is doing everything but coming off the number?
(pete franklin? you out there?)
0-3 going into the Bye week. Nowhere to go but down from there. Only game I would think we can win in that scenario is game 3 against Baltimore – which isn’t much of a chance. Last 4 weeks are brutal as well. I’m guessing we start off 0-3, fight our way to 4-5 (sound familiar) and then implode again finishing 6-10.
The over is -160, the under is +140
Looks like we can help the steelers start off 0-6 this year.
SUPER BOWL!!!
The team, pre-draft, is at a similar level to last years squad. Maybe slightly better due to the added experience of a young team. Plus Tate, when healthy, is better than any RB we had last year. Also we got rid of most of the players who can single-handedly lose games, especially at QB.
Our draft ammo is about 1.5x most other clubs in what is viewed as a very good crop. In most drafts, we’d expect to get 2 players who can make an impact right away, but this year we should be able to get 3 or 4, at least in theory.
My guess as to the positions of impact this year would be;
1) A WR who can separate from defenders and regularly catch the ball without ever allowing it do deflect off himself into the defender’s hands.
2) A G who performs well (opens running lanes/pulls) in Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme.
3) A MLB who is in the right place, can tackle reliably, and cover TE’s
4) A CB who can cover taller receivers.
As for the most important position, QB, we should improve because even just mediocre play would be a huge step up. We will either start Hoyer, who hopefully should be about league average, or a rookie QB who was good enough to beat him out.
All that being said, with a new coach, offensive system, and a lot of new faces it will take time for the team to gel. The start of this schedule is awful. The first three games along with the week four bye is the NFL’s middle finger pointed at Cleveland (where it has been since the mid 90’s). We could easily start 0-3. After that, we could have a winning record, with a chance to get to .500. And that last game against Baltimore should be meaningful in one way or another.
I think the first 3 games will set the tone for the rest of the season. Start 1-2 or 0-3, and it will be a long year (again). Start 2-1 or 3-0, and we’re headed for the playoffs. It will be a mental avalanche, one way or the other, for a fragile team.
+200 would mean that you bet $100 to win $200. Think of everything being based off $100, so “+ x” means bet $100 to win whatever x is, and ” – y” means bet y to win $100.
Not sure what site Vespo is using, but what I’m seeing is that we’re -105 to go over 6.5, which is a little better than the -110 that Vegas typically charges, meaning they’re leaning towards the under.
The first half of the season, Thursday night games will be on CBS and NFL Network and then the NFL has the option to use CBS in the last two games. The Browns-Bengals Thursday night matchup will be exclusively on NFLN, but called by the CBS crew of Nantz and Simms.
I feel like 1-2 is acceptable based on the soft middle of the schedule, particularly weeks 5 thru 13. Of course the last 4 weeks are really tough, so 2-1 to start would be really nice.
Never learn do we?

lol, right thanks. i do get confused on that. never bothered to learn it since i can just type in the wager and know what’s coming back.
THAT BEING SAID>>>
at -160 vegas is saying they want you to bet the ‘under 6.5 wins’ side. and i wonder if there are any other lines sitting at -160.

i need to amend this to 12-4 because we’re beating the saints in the home opener.

I’m not seeing -160 anywhere. What I saw had the over at -105.
Only thoughts that matter to me on this schedule:
Hate early bye weeks
Hate that we’re done with Pittsburgh before Columbus Day
Love only 1 expected warm weather game late
Hate but understand only 1 nationally televised game (until week15 gets bumped up to SNF)
Good gawd man!
I hate to be a Negative Ned, but every year it seems like people look at the schedule and start talking about how confident this is the year we go 9-7.
I think even if we had all our questions answered and knew what we had coaching wise and QB wise, it would still be hard to confidently predict a number.
There are a LOT of questions, though. Mike Pettine might be the best head coach ever, but we don’t know that yet. Kyle Shanahan could just need to step out of his father’s shadow. Who knows? But I will say the Jaguars have an *excellent* head coach and they still suck.
I agree I blame all of this on the greedy NFL for pushing back the draft. We have to have something to kill the extra time might as well be on the schedule, lol. Oy vey!
I see 5 winnable games on that schedule so I will take the under and predict 4.
