April 8, 2014Keith Olbermann proposes Indians rename the team the Cleveland Sockalexis
April 8, 2014The wheels are officially in motion. With news coming out that Joe Dumars will resign from his position as Detroit Pistons team president, it shouldn’t be too long before the long-time Detroit native starts to see his name turning up more frequently with regard to (fellow Detroiter) Dan Gilbert and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers are currently being run by David Griffin, who assumed the position of acting general manager following the firing of Chris Grant earlier this season. Not long thereafter, ESPN.com writer Brian Windhorst was a guest on Detroit Sports 105.1 with Matt Dery and mentioned that Dumars and Gilbert are neighbors and show a lot of “mutual respect” for one another. In what could serve as a bit of corroboration, HoopsHype tweeted that Dumars was “rumored to be in the mix” for the Cavs’ GM job, while also mentioning how awful he was in Detroit.
Dumars has spent 29 years with the Pistons franchise, as both a player and an executive, and has had a hand in every Detroit title. Conversely, Dumars drafted Darko Milicic in 2003, gave $90 million to Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon in 2009, and signed high-priced free agents Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings this past offseason, all leading to a 28-49 record in a dreadful Eastern Conference. This was once the guy who was going to land LeBron in 2010—he “had it all figured out.”
Things could be worse. After all, Windhorst also linked Cleveland to…Isiah Thomas.

Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Now, that is how you get your fanbase to be onboard with whoever you actually sign. Put some fear into who you might also consider. Dan could offer the job to Nick Gilbert at this point and people would be relieved.
He sure does look the part:

Beat me to it … better Dumars than his ol’ backcourt mate.
I say Gilbert will expertly meld his fascination with all things Michigan (Fred Macleod, Tom Izzo) with his history of hiring only extremely tall caucasian ex-players as GM. Mr. Laimbeer, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
And the root of the problem is making itself more clear – Casino Dan just can’t put together a competent front office.
Gilbert is going to bring in both, in hopes of making Kyrie & Dion the Thomas & Dumars Duo 2.0.
On a side note, I would be interested in Laimbeer as a bench coach.
Cleveland – we’re not Detroit!…yet?
Dumars? Thomas?
That Detroit article was pure gold… Amazing how times have changed.
Joe Dumars did build a championship with the Pistons in 2004, and a team that played in six straight conference from finals (2003-2008) and made the playoffs eight straight years (2002-2009). Not many GMs have a championship ring. Joe needs a fresh start, and deserves another chance, this coming from a Pistons fan.
