Would you play more golf if it was easier with a 15-inch hole?

April 23, 2014Indians pitcher Danny Salazar seems to be a one-pitch pony right now. The ball that Mike Moustakas crushed for a three run homer last night was a breaking ball that was up and right over the middle of the plate. His fastball has been terrific, especially the first two times through the order.
But if Salazar is going to become an effective and consistent starter, he is going to need to come up with some different action on his fastball or vary the speed a bit and hit spots. This article at Getting Blanked is a good read. Three different types of fastball dominant pitchers and how they are effective.

No surprise to those long time readers here at WFNY, but I’m not much of a fan of diva athletes. Take a guy like say, Keyshawn Johnson. Something about his personality just rubbed me the wrong way. (To be fair, I’m sure I’d annoy him as well, if he had any clue who I was.)
So I read this at Eleven Warriors and I have mixed feelings. It appears Keyshawn Johnson Jr. has Ohio State on his short list. He isn’t his father. It is a little unfair to put those kinds of expectations on him whether good or bad. He could come in and be a model citizen and player. He could also fall short of his father’s talent. You never know.
We’ve seen other receivers with famous fathers come in. Chris Carter’s son Duron didn’t have such a good time at his dad’s alma mater. I guess if Keyshawn Jr. comes to Columbus we’ll be hearing more from the elder Keyshawn.

This was making the social media rounds on Tuesday. It is an article about the time that Cleveland released a million and a half helium balloons trying to set a world record. I realize that many of you were not yet born when they did this in 1986. I certainly was alive, but I don’t really remember this. Anyone?

Pro Football Talk broke down the Browns’ draft needs (by position) and somehow managed to ignore the offensive line and the inside linebacker position. Hmmm. Interesting.
Of course they list QB, WR and CB which are pretty much universally understood. Mike Wilkening chose to also include RB and TE in his top five positions of need.
Don’t get me wrong, I could easily see the Browns adding someone at both of those positions, but I think more as depth type of picks. Inside linebacker and guard are two spots that a draft pick could easily come in and win the job.

Ummm, guards? GUARDS!

Oh, and the 2014 NFL schedule is released tonight.
Keyshawn was arrested Monday for domestic violence.
What is it about WRs that makes so many of them flaming a’s?
I vaguely remember the balloon release. I was only 11 at the time, but it feels familiar. I love the video clip when they interview the kids, and the one says, “Totally awesome!” That was a pretty new expression (at least, in northeast Ohio) back then.
hope everyone put their selections in for the Rams schedule.

That is one of the strangest articles I have read on NFL-needs. The writer strongly implies that we should look at getting depth in case we lose our 2015 FA CBs and TE while ignoring other obvious needs (FS, OG, ILB). It doesn’t go into any detail either and just states opinions as fact.
Honestly, it appears the editor told the writer he had 1hour to write a generalization on the Browns. Perhaps that is what happened.

The PFT article just reinforces what I’ve suspected for a long time. The national talking heads of football don’t actually watch any of our games that don’t feature a team they are actively following (but don’t mind commenting anyways). It is blatantly obvious in Peter King’s MMQB whenever he talks about the Browns that he is just pulling content out of the air.
same here. vague memories. I love how the article above notes it as a calamity because:
(1) Shut down runway at local airport – if they didn’t know this ahead of time, then they were fools. By saying local airport, I assume they mean Burke.
(2) Interrupt Coast Guard attempts to rescue pair of fishermen – hope it didn’t truly impede them here and I could see this as an issue. Why wasn’t this first and did it truly impede?
(3) Spooked some prize-winning horses – this made me laugh. Really? This is the horror that it caused?
(4) Made a mess – see #1. They had to know it would make a mess. I mean, 1.5million baloons.
=======================
I mean, there were real reasons that the balloon release thing is no longer done like this one. It can really hurt wildlife (particularly birds), it can hurt industry (remember my parents discussing years later how they got sucked into factories, etc.), and it is just a general nuisance for 30minutes or so of bliss.
I was at the balloon launch. We watched it from the restaurant above May Co. That’s because we were not aware they were planning on releasing the balloons earlier than scheduled due to weather conditions. Hey, it was the 80’s, so real time updates weren’t readily available.
What I remember most was when we were driving back to my Grandparents place on 185th there were people pulling over to the median wall on 90, parking and getting out of their cars to try and grab some balloons as the found their way (rather quickly) back to terra firma. Or, as my Father put it, “Look at those dumb (bleeping) people just running into the middle of a (bleep bleep) freeway for a (bleep bleep) three cent balloon”
Cherished memories
There are “calamities” and then there are “calamities.” This was clearly neither.
truth. it annoys me like how the Cowboys, Redskins, Giants etc getting soooo much attention despite being lousy teams. the NFL and media based on it are all business – small market teams disappear.
I would start with parents…or lackthereof
I would start with parents…or lackthereof
When I read a national writer spouting half-informed analyses about a local team my reaction is not knee-jerk “they ignore Cleveland!” It’s more like, “why should I trust what you write about any team?” Of all the local pro teams the Browns are hardly an afterthought. For the losingest team in the league they get far more attention than deserved, far more than bad franchises like the Jaguars or Bills.
that’s funny, i thought Peter King pulled most of his stuff out of his…well, let’s just say his proctologist gets updates well before we do
Because when it’s Cleveland it’s HI-larious. Seriously, there may be articles written about the town (especially in sports) where a joke or three isn’t made at our expense, or a non-native talking head who doesn’t smirk and/or chuckle when mentioning Cleveland and. Cleveland sports, but good luck finding them.
Not much worry about him running out of things then, is there?

Exactly! When Peter King publishes MMQB am I really to believe that he watched every snap of every game that happened on Sunday before 6:30AM on Monday when it goes up? Maybe the national pundits watched a play or two from each game on a highlight reel but that’s about it.
In misc Indians bits: Did anyone notice that the Royals’ first base coach is named Rusty Kuntz? No kidding.
