Waiting for the 2014 NFL draft, Gilbert Arenas’ cash, Metroparks foot golf, and Game of Thrones… While We’re Waiting
April 22, 2014Indians 4, Royals 3: Deep blasts, solid pitching and a squirrel help Tribe win
April 22, 2014Using Google search data, the blog for BestTickets.com has derived the most popular athletes, sports, positions, and teams on a state-by-state basis. While the NFL is the top dog in much of the United States, the most searched-for athlete in the state of Ohio is none other than LeBron James.
James is actually the runaway leader in the United States, being the most searched for in 23 of 50 states. The fact that James is from Ohio, and had once played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, should only serve to cement him as the leader in the Buckeye State.
There is plenty of data to dig through in this piece. For instance, what states don’t have football as a priority? What teams are the most popular in all of the four major sports? I would have never guessed the top-searched NFL team. Nor would I have put the Cavaliers ahead of the several playoff teams, including the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets. The Tribe in the top 10? Also surprising.
Perhaps the most interesting, the player who rounds out the Top 10? Former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. If anyone could bump the Browns up their respective list, it’d be this kid.

Do Google searches directly correlate to popularity? I might be wrong, but I generally associate positive feelings with the word “popularity”. Just because someone uses Google to search something doesn’t mean they necessarily like it. It just means they want information.
Yeah, “popular” is a bit nebulous. Most definitions link to positive or favorable beliefs. Others focus on representation. While I don’t necessarily agree with the way BestTickets portrayed their data, Google searches do, in the end, represent prevailing inquiries.
I didn’t know LeBron James was the SEC payer of the year
Popular is the wrong word for this. Kind of like when Forbes calculated the Indians Fans were the “Worst Fans in Sports”… I highly disagree that ticket sales and jersey sales determine how good your fans are. And ask anyone in Louisiana, LeBron James is not more popular than Drew Brees
Manti Te’o with a strong showing in Hawaii!
This is pretty silly stuff. The Indians are in the top 10 because of “searches.” Hmm. I wonder if this has anything to do with Chief Wahoo . . . ? Nah, must be because people loves them some Tribe baseball.
And LeBron is the most “popular” based on “searches”? I would guess that this criteria would have made Osama bin Laden the most “popular” person in the world for a few years.
What a bunch of wet blankets here dissecting Scott’s story just because they can. I appreciate the effort Scott!!!
It’s certainly not my story…I’m sharing someone elses findings and using their term for it.
That said, what about the fact that the Cavs are more ‘popular’ that any other CLE team on the national scale, but can’t catch a break locally? Found this to be pretty interesting.
Nationally, the Cavs have Kyrie/Uncle Drew. That is a bigger name than anything the other teams have (as much as I love JoeT, JoeH, and Carlos Santana).
someone has to fill the dufflebags with cash.
they didn’t say positive/negative. I would wager that Osama WAS the most popular person in the world for quite some time. Sure, most of those people wanted to kill him, but that’s still being popular.

Is it?
I always viewed being popular as people knowing who you are. People certainly knew who he was.
Well, that is certainly not the popular view . . .
