May 7, 2014The 2014 NFL Draft is one day away and rumors are flying about who the Cleveland Browns will select with their first pick. All the talk on sports radio in Cleveland have been surrounding their first round picks. But the Browns have many more picks beyond the two in the first round.
The fourth-overall pick is important, but they can really make a mark if they hit on some of their later picks. Rather than focusing on a handful of players, I am going to take a look at those who I would like to see the Browns take later in the draft.
Here are 10 players who could be great values past the first round in the draft. Also read till the end, where I present three bold predictions for the Browns in the draft.
1. Jarvis Landry, LSU
LSU’s Jarvis Landry could end up being one of the best receivers in the draft because of his hands, toughness, and athleticism. He would give the Browns a sure-handed target and someone who can be the number two receiver for them.
2. Terrance West, Towson
Towson’s Terrance West has the speed and size that a prototypical running back has in the NFL. He is also a powerful back who can break tackles and has good vision to hit the gap. He would be a great fit in the zone blocking running scheme the Browns will be instituting.
3. Dri Archer, Kent State
Kent State’s Dri Archer is considered one of the most explosive players in the draft. He can play all over the field as a running back, wide receiver, and a returner. He could give the Browns another playmaker, who can make big plays and make the offense even more dangerous.
4. Shayne Skov, Stanford
Stanford’s Shayne Skov is an intense and tough linebacker who seems to be around the ball all the time. He has great vision and intelligence that helps him make plays in the backfield and also go back to cover the middle of the field. He would fit in perfectly as an inside linebacker for the Browns and be a great emotional leader for the defense.
5. Jack Mewhort, Ohio State
Ohio State’s Jack Mewhort was durable and productive player in college. He is a strong offensive tackle to could go inside and play guard. He would give the Browns a versatile player to stick in the offensive line and be a productive blocker.
6. Trent Murphy, Stanford
Stanford’s Trent Murphy reminds me of Paul Kruger. He has the athleticism to play outside linebacker and be a very good pass rusher in the NFL. He would give the Browns a young pass rusher to add to their roster.
7. Keith McGill, Utah
Utah’s Keith McGill is a huge corner with good speed to go along with his size. He is at his best in press coverage, when he uses his height to his advantage. He is a little raw in his technique and intelligence, but you cannot teach his size. The Browns are in need of a corner to go along with Joe Haden. He would give them a tall complement to Haden and allow Buster Skrine to cover the slot.
8. Jared Abbrederis, Wisconsin
Wisconsin’s Jared Abbrederis was one of the most productive wide receivers in college the past few seasons. He is smart with great hands and very good route running skills. He does have pretty good athleticism to make a play after the catch. The Browns would be getting a reliable target that can make plays as a third or fourth receiver.
9. Dominique Easley, Florida
Florida’s Dominique Easley is a super athletic defensive lineman, who has great pass rushing skills. He very quick off the ball and is very strong for his shorter frame. The Browns could plug him into the defensive end position and add another great pass rusher to their defense.
10. Trey Burton, Florida
Florida’s Trey Burton is a super athletic tight end that fits the mold of a hybrid tight end. He can play anywhere on the field, either in the backfield, out wide, and even on the line. He would be another passing target for the Browns and one who is very versatile.
Three Bold Predictions
1. The Cleveland Browns will make a trade in the first round to go and get their quarterback.
2. Either Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel will be drafted by the Browns.
3. The Browns will draft a quarterback, wide receiver, and cornerback with their first three picks in the draft.
For the Browns, I agree on:
West, Archer, McGill, and Burton
RGB Value Pick: Aaron Murray on day 3.
Also, the local SEC radio honks are preaching, “Stay away from Odell Beckham…HE CAN NOT CATCH.”
“The Browns will draft a quarterback, wide receiver, and cornerback with their first three picks in the draft.”
I believe it’ll be QB, WR and G…
