Cavs will offer Kyrie Irving max deal per report
June 9, 2014Tribe Weekend Recap: Bauer & Tomlin as saviors, Carlos’ triumphant return, and a major roster decision looming
June 9, 2014The Cleveland Browns have never been on HBO’s iconic NFL documentary series “Hard Knocks” and they won’t be a part of it this year either. Tom Reed’s latest on Cleveland.com includes comments from Mike Pettine admitting that the Browns used their status as a team with a first-year head coach to choose not to do the show.
“It was for the same reason we didn’t feel super comfortable having a camera in the draft room,” Pettine said. “Let’s get through the first time, let’s get through the first year.”
On the one hand, I’d like to think it’s good that the Browns aren’t doing the show so that it’s not some kind of extra distraction. At the same time, that lack of distraction over the last decade hasn’t done much for the Browns. I would have been fine with it if the team had decided to do the show.
As Tom Reed points out, with Johnny Manziel on the roster, this likely won’t be the last time the Cleveland Browns are asked to do the show.

I think there is much more downside to being on this show than upside. You don’t want guys thinking about how they’ll look on TV. We don’t need this.
/Craig, it’s not going to make us better 😉
Yes, I would like a clarification from Craig on why going to Vegas on your personal time is bad, but having HBO bug you during work hours is okay.
Bah
I can’t remember the last time someone actually wanted to be on this show…
OH GREAT. GUESS BROWNS JUST DON’T WANNA BE RELEVANT.
Not so fast, my friend. I understand the Browns are in serious negotiations with ESPN about launching the Johnny Channel. Stay tuned, as it were.
“lack of distraction over the last decade hasn’t done much for the Browns”
I don’t think the lack of an HBO camera crew has been the reason the Browns have been terrible.
I didn’t realize that RIVR Media worked with ESPN. I thought for sure I’d have to tune into HGTV to see a series of Johnny programs. I thought they were already in pre-production on:
Extreme NFL Makeover: Johnny Football Edition
HBO gave Mike Brown a nickel, so he was extremely happy to give them total access.
Craig Haters. Craiters.
Craiters be craiting…
They’re wholly separate things. Also, it’s not so much about Vegas as it is epic partying to a point that I would guess is more epic than 99% of the rest of the NFL with a higher frequency than (again, guessing) 99% of the rest of the NFL.
What really shocks me is why everyone doesn’t at least agree that this situation could EASILY look much better.
(Warning: Rambling, unnaturally long run-on sentence forthcoming, but read it in Lewis Black’s voice where he talks until he’s running out of breath.)
It’s like, we all are staring at the same evidence that clearly points to potential problems and has been noted historically as being linked to problems time and again to the point that there are entire anonymous organizations designed to help people deal with those problematic things and yet, “THIS DOESN’T MEAN THERE’S ANY TYPE OF A PROBLEM!” is seemingly a more “rational” approach? ARE YOU INSANE?
yeah, and I noted that JFF’s history demonstrates potential future problems if he continues to party too hard (just that it was May, so not a big deal, yet).
but, HBO getting access and potentially affecting the way our training camp is run (because, let’s face it, it would) is a big deal and it’s smart to say no.
big difference between having the owner’s wife control the message on a fluff Travel Channel series than it is having HBO try to stir up faux drama.
Hey if we keep changing our head coach every season we’ll always have a baked-in excuse not to do the show… ZING!
The Seahawks want to be a part of it. There’s a little bit of debate in my mind as to how Hard Knocks might impact your team. There’s no debate in my mind about the other thing…
Good for Pete Carroll. And, it’s easier for a SB defending team. They have the built-in storylines that help trend positive. I would still prefer my team not be included, but Pete’s a different type of guy.
Our team, auto-deflects negative as it is and if you don’t think HBO would be trying to drum up the QB-controversy (whether or not there is one), then I do not know what to say.
Very little can be gained from HBO filming our team (most people will mock until we win regular season games regardless, HBO is filming preseason). Just say no to HBO (and Del Negro).
Del Negro? More like Del Neg-NO
Del-No-No
i don’t think you can ZING yourself. Judges?
Johnny hatuz. Jihadis.
You can, you’ll just receive low scores…
awksauce
Can’t argue with you there.
well, Johnny’s our savior, so shut up and let the boy act the adolescent fool or he’ll wanna go elsewhere.
We’re Cleveland. We take what we get and we justify whatever he does. We save our rage until the entitled brat disses the locals or undeniable incompetence gets him kicked to the curb. (Psst, Johnny, better figure out how to read a defense, stat. I’m all in but getting too old for useless frat boys).
