Could the No. 11 jersey be coming down from the rafters? Tony Rizzo of ESPN Cleveland (WKNR/850 AM) reports that long-time center Zydrunas Ilgauskas is considering a return to the Cavaliers, eying up a role for “10-to-15 minutes per night.”

Ilgauskas, 39, has not played in the NBA since the 2010-2011 season. His jersey was famously retired by the Cavs last season in a ceremony that included his friend LeBron James, who was still a member of the Miami Heat at the time.

The Cavs continue to be in need of a center; speculation is swirling that the newly acquired Kevin Love could see time at the five in the event head coach David Blatt runs with a small lineup. Rizzo claims that Ilgauskas has been medically cleared and has been working out in hopes of a comeback that (finally) results in an NBA Championship.

ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst believes that Ilgauskas is in shape to still play, but his immobility on defense would be one that would not satisfy the team’s need for rim protection. Windhorst also believes that while Big Z may be in play, it would not be a signing that would happen before the start of the 2014-15 regular season. It is also believed that the all-time leader in games played as a Cavalier is content with his current situation.

    Brett Favre approves.

  • thenoclist

This wouldn’t even be the fifth craziest thing to happen to this team this off season.

  • Harv 21

Nate Thurman says he may be 73 but his legs are in better shape than Z’s and never played patty cake with his own shots to goose his rebounding stats. Plus, he’s from Akron. Challenges Z to an opening night dance-off as they slowly descend from the rafters in their respective jerseys.

  • JNeids

If both he and the team thinks he can actually be useful, fine. And I mean really, honestly, truthfully think so. Because it would be very painful to watch if he is just a shell of his former self and fails miserably.

  • Harv 21

Brendan Haywood goes on DL, listed reason “uncontrolled laughing fit.”

  • Harv 21

Z’s boys banned from Q, won’t stop screaming “Dad, you’re embarrassing us!” whenever he struggles to his feet and pulls off warm ups.

  • eldaveablo

And is it so hard to imagine a scenario where multiple injuries hit the team, and due to their cap situation they can’t do anything but play Z 30 minutes a night?
This is why we can’t have nice things.

  • Harv 21

Z’s wifey keeps sign behind bench: “Honey be careful! You’re the only one that can reach stuff in the high cabinets.”

  • JNeids

    Naw, I’m sure…oh wait…
NAW I’M SURE ANDY AND HAYWOOD WILL PLAY 82 GAMES EACH THIS YEAR.

  • JNeids

What happened to only having enough time for one of Scott’s article from WWW?

  • Harv 21

    work? Inspired!

  • JNeids

I’m actually enjoying your conversation with yourself. My only request is that one of your replies to yourself be in haiku form. For old times sake.

  • JNeids

I don’t know why, but this just made me think of this:

  • cmm13

Well….. Z was never anything to gush over on defense and that will definitely continue to be the case.
But as a stretch shooter, he could add value.
DO WE HAVE ANY STRETCH SHOOTERS? ANYONE? ANYONE?

  • Wow

I take anything Rizzo says with a grain of salt.

  • mgbode

Harv has lifted up my whole morning with this exchange.

  • mgbode

    It’s not “Z-boys”, it’s Z-Boyeezzz. Double the E, double the Z, double the flava!

  • mgbode

okay, if we are going to be serious with how to utilize Z here, then it would likely be on defense as a 7’2″ guy who can just sit in the paint and make sure noone gets easy layups. don’t even bother having him chase anyone outside of the paint. on offense, he can set picks and hit a jumper from time to time.

if we aren’t being serious, then I want to see Z on his slow-motion dribble-drives like he did to the Spurs in the ’07 Finals. beauty in motion, baby!

  • mgbode

except, the last time the team wanted to leak out some information but not have people take it 100% as truth, they did seem to use Rizzo (and I was one of the ones who laughed him off).

  • http://waitingfornextyear.com/ Scott @ WFNY

    As did I.

  • Robbie

Can we not give Rizzo the attention he craves with a rumor like this?

It just stinks of desperation and is not a good look for our local media. The only way we get rid of our ridiculous perception outside of Cleveland, is to change it. Not letting these blowhards and rumor mongers get the attention they crave.

This guy ‘confirmed’ Lebron was coming home about 5 times before the story broke.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Stay retired you’ll get a ring anyways!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Lets see Grossi, MKC and Rizzo…who do all ya’ll like?

  • thenoclist

Yeah, as a member of the staff doesn’t he get one if they win?

  • The_Real_Shamrock

    Yes.

  • Harv 21

    “It’s a young man’s game.”
    Long fingers probe for hairline.
    “Need a tat for this.”

  • http://waitingfornextyear.com/ Scott @ WFNY

I like Tony. Holds no punches.

  • Steve

Again Harv, tips that don’t go into the basket don’t count as rebounds in the NBA.

  • Steve

Yeah, this is a ridiculous idea, but as long as the Cavs options at the 5 are should-be-bubble-wrapped-24/7 Varejao and only-here-because-of-a-contract-quirk Haywood, I’ll believe they’re looking at even the ridiculous ideas.

  • Denny

    So lurpy.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

There are multiple unsigned guys they could add now not to mention many possibilities with those contracts they got from Utah. Plus they have Haywood’s deal not to mention a couple expiring contracts. Oh and a couple first round picks next year. Plenty of options before something like Z coming out of retirement.

  • RGB

Definitely brought his A game this afternoon.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I take ‘em all with a grain of salt. I actually hear/read more breaking news from national outlets so for me the local people are just sort of also rans.

  • JNeids

    Much appreciated.

  • Wow

With all the shakeups (again) at 850 I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to get ratings.

  • Harv 21

Again, Steve, cite me to this rule. There’s been many complaints about players padding stats this way. E.g., http://www.sactownroyalty.com/2012/5/17/3024984/an-analysis-of-demarcus-cousins-rebounding-his-own-missed-shots
If I’m wrong, fine, I like to learn, but show me.

    Which Tony?

  • mgbode

We would have all failed if this commercial didn’t make it into the thread:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ytOjwv5lbQ

  • Harv 21

as did I. Thought he was blowing smoke about the back, but he heard about the foot.

  • Mike Bogucci

Still waiting for that tip in rule citation…steve.

  • mgbode

I am pretty sure that Steve is correct on this one. I remember going over these things when we had Ben Wallace who seemed to tip the ball more than actually grab it in the advanced portion of his career.

here’s a NY Times article that describes it somewhat (and mentions that if you tip it directly to a teammate, then you do get credit). I’ll let Steve dig through the actual NBA rulebook though.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/07/sports/basketball/chandler-finds-new-way-to-grab-rebounds-he-doesnt.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
By N.B.A. rules, rebounds are credited to the first player who gains clear possession of a ball immediately after a missed shot (or to the player who tips the ball into the basket).

  • Mike Bogucci

Perhaps i am misreading this…but…’or to the player who tips the ball into the basket’ appears to support Harvs stance.

Edit: i am totally misreading this. Please ignore me.

  • Steve

There’s no official rule publicly available, but mgbode’s link describes standard operating procedure for scorers. You’ll also notice that those tips that aren’t rebounds don’t count as missed field goal attempts either.

  • cmm13

WHO WANTS TO BUY SOME DVD’S???

  • saggy

the best way to utilize Z would be as a coat rack for the long stuff.
