College Football
Ohio State wins 34-17 over Navy
Ohio State started slowly against Navy under redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett. The offense did not click right away, but in the second half the offense started rolling. Barrett ended 12 of 15 for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The offense did not feature a standout performance, but the production was spread to a wide range of players. The young defense looked better then last season’s below average defense. The Navy offense was hard to get control of, but the Buckeyes defense did well in limiting big plays and touchdowns. It was a solid win for the young Bucks.
Ohio University beats Kent State 17-14
Ohio won with a 44-yard kick by Josiah Yazdani as time expired. The game was neck and neck throughout the game with neither team able to pull away. Ohio was led by quarterback Derrius Vick, who completed 18 of 24 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Daz’mond Patterson added 61 yards on 17 carries. Kent State was unable to run the ball against Ohio, so quarterback Colin Reardon had to carry the offense. He finished 30 of 41 for 264 yards and two touchdowns. Ohio gets a key conference win in the season opener.
Akron crushes Howard 41-0
Akron dominated Howard in their opening game. The offense and defense showed off well by making 513 yards of total offense and holding Howard to only 216 yards of total offense. Akron excelled in the passing game versus Howard. Quarterback Kyle Pohl was 22 of 35 for 304 yards and four touchdowns and also added 48 yards on the ground. The Zips had four players with over 60 receiving yards. This was not much of a game and so it is not a great measure of what Akron will be this year.

The Hudson Explorers swept passed Euclid behind star quarterback Mitch Guadagni. The dual-threat quarterback was 10 of 17 for 185 yards with two touchdowns and also added 107 yards and touchdown on the ground. Hudson showed that they will be a power once again led by quarterback Mitch Guadagni.
Saint Vincent Saint Mary beats Akron Garfield 45-10

They were led by quarterback Dom Davis, who completed 9 of 11 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Vince Lockett ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns. The Irsih had 38 points at the half to put the game away. The Irish look to repeat as champs once again this season.
Glenville falls to Cathedral Prep (Pa.) 21-6
Glenville struggled against Cathedral Prep of Pennsylvania. The Tarblooders went scoreless on two fourth-and-goal situations that really hurt their chances of winning the game. They also turned the ball over three times in the game. The Glenville touchdown came from a 25-yard scramble from quarterback Marcus Drish. The question remains if the team can go far once again after losing a lot of talent from last season.
Mentor wins 48-14 over Youngstown Boardman
The Mentor Cardinals regained their offensive power this season. Quarterback Jake Floriea, who threw three touchdowns and ran for another one, led the offensive explosion. He threw the three touchdowns to Jarrell Jackson, Eddie Daugherty and Jason Blizzard. Daugherty also scored on a 49-yard punt return and threw a 28-yard halfback pass. Mentor will look to continue their run of deep playoff appearances.
Strongsville comes back to win 32-31 over Lake Catholic
The Strongsville Mustangs completed their comeback against Lake Catholic with a game winning two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown with 41 seconds left. Quarterback Bobby Cole, who threw the game-winning touchdown, led the team in the comeback victory. Strongsville will look to regain stature as one of the better teams in Northeast Ohio after a couple of down years.
St. Ignatius beats Lawrence Central (Ind.) 28-21
St. Ignatius started off another year with a close win over Lawrence Cathedral of Indiana. The team was steered by quarterback Dennis Grosel, who threw for 314 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. His main target was receiver Jack Cook, who had six catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. The biggest story of the game was coach Chuck Kyle tying Bill Gutbrod and Augie Bossu for the most wins in Cuyahoga County high school football history with 310 wins. The Wildcats will look to continue the tradition and make a strong run in the playoffs.
Avon cruises by Avon Lake 44-7
Avon may have had one of the most impressive victories of any team in Northeast Ohio. Avon powered past rival Avon Lake behind the performance of quarterback Jake Sopko. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 247 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. His main target was receiver Zack Torbet, who had five receptions for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Avon showed that they will be a power once again and look to make a run to a championship.
St. Edward dominates Gilman (Md.) 38-7
The St. Edward Eagles showed off their top ranking against Gilman of Maryland. The Eagles were led by running back Cole Gest, who had 194 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The game was determined on the defensive end for the Eagles. St. Edward only allowed 87 total yards and one special team touchdown from Gilman. It was a true team win for the Eagles, who look to be the team to beat in Division I.
Benedictine topples Normandy 62-13
The Benedictine Bengals took the control of the game early and beat Normandy. The Bengals had 230 total yards in the first quarter and 483 yards in the game. Star Jerome Baker was a standout in the game with touchdown runs of 41 and 13 yards. Running back Aubrey Ward scored three touchdowns on the ground, while receiver Justin Layne had two touchdown receptions. Baker will look to lead the Bengals to a successful season and a deep run in the playoffs.

about those logos…….
I can’t believe the Hudson Explorers are this good at football now. They were simply awful when I was there. What a strange world we live in.
