Saints’ poor tackling gives Browns’ offense plenty of opportunity
September 13, 2014Jordan Cameron headlines Browns week two inactives
September 14, 2014Maybe this is the week that we see the Johnny Manziel package. You know? The package of Johnny Manziel plays that had the Steelers prepping and talking ahead of the Browns’ week one loss? Of course Manziel didn’t see the field, even as CBS’ cameras strained to catch snippets of Johnny Football clapping after a play. Here we are again, on the cusp of week two and again it’s a pre-game story.
The Browns feel the need to be creative and throw different looks at the Saints given the limitations of their offensive personnel, and have been working on read-option plays for Manziel all offseason. Expect to see those plays in a regular season game for the first time today, at least for a few snaps.
I’m sure La Canfora has done his job well and isn’t just making things up, but I have to laugh. Maybe I’m wrong to do so and Johnny Manziel will actually get in the game as an “x-factor” for some plays, but it just seems like the Browns are running a gimmick. No, not gimmick plays, but a gimmick where they continually leak that opposing teams better watch out for Johnny Manziel and his playmaking ability.
Never mind that the Browns only have two quarterbacks on the active roster. Never mind that running the read-option, while a different look to be sure, isn’t a commonplace offense in the NFL for a reason.
Live in fear Browns opponents! The Johnny Manziel package is a threat! Beware!
Good for the Browns. I hope it’s successful.

In fairness, Johnny’s pass to Agnew (while high) should have been caught and would have been close to a first down if not a first down.
I think the packages are dumb, too. But, they give Johnny some game experience which will be nice if he has to play when Hoyer is hurt or pulled for whatever reason.
Browns won, which is great. And Hoyer played well to get the win. But Rodgers, Brees, or Manning he was not. Dalton he was not.
