September 22, 2014It was another big week in Ohio college and high school football. In college football, the MAC got tighter with multiple teams moving to 2-2 on the season. Ohio and Toledo moved to 2-2 after wins this week, while Bowling Green moved to 2-2 with a loss. In the OAC, John Carroll and Mount Union remained unbeaten in blowout wins over fellow OAC teams. In high school football, the news was of the St. Edward Eagles upset by Cincinnati Elder, resulting in the Eagles first loss of the season. Hudson, Avon, Mentor, and St. Ignatius all won this week.

College Football
Ohio beats Idaho 36-24
Ohio moves to 2-2 on the season after a tough battle with Idaho. The Bobcats were led by running back AJ Ouellette, who had 27 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Bobcat quarterback JD Sprague passed for 165 yards and rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown. The star of the game may have been linebacker Quentin Poling. Poling had three interceptions in the game, including a huge pick in the fourth quarter when Idaho was driving down 23-17. Quarterback Matt Linehan, who passed for 353 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, led Idaho’s attack.

Cincinnati wins over Miami (OH) 31-24
Cincinnati remained unbeaten with a hard fought win over Miami (OH). Bearcat quarterback Gunner Kiel continued his hot start to the season, throwing for 271 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. His main target was former Maple Heights star Shaq Washington, catching seven receptions for 71 yards. Miami (OH) quarterback Andrew Hendrix threw for 262 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. His top target was receiver David Frazier, who had five catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. The Bearcats move to 2-0, while the Red Hawks fall to 0-4.

Bowling Green crushed by Wisconsin 68-17
Bowling Green was no match for one of the best Big Ten teams, Wisconsin. The Falcons gave up a total of 756 yard of offense, including an amazing 644 rushing yards. The Badgers were led by star running back Melvin Gordon, who rushed 13 times for 253 yards and five touchdowns. Badger quarterback Tanner McEvoy was a dual threat with 112 yards, a touchdown, and an interception through the air, while rushing for 158 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback James Knapke, who threw for 163 yards and an interception, led the Falcons’ offense. The Falcons fall to 2-2 on the season.

Toledo beats Ball State 34-23
Toledo evened up their record with a victory over the Ball State. Toledo and former Willoughby South running back Kareem Hunt led the Rockets’ attack. Hunt rushed 12 times for 142 yards and a touchdown. Toledo quarterback threw for 152 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Ball State quarterback Ozzie Mann threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Jahwan Edwards added 125 yards on the ground. Toledo moves to 2-2 on the season and gains an important MAC victory over 1-3 Ball State.

Akron toppled by Marshall 48-17
Marshall handily beat Akron on Saturday, causing the Zips to fall to 1-2 on the season. Marshall had a two-headed running attack with running backs Remi Watson and Devon Johnson. Watson ran 9 times for 124 yards and touchdown, while Johnson rushed 18 times for 103 yards and a touchdown. Marshall dual threat quarterback Rakeem Cato threw for 210 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, while rushing for 23 yards and two touchdowns. Zip quarterback Kyle Pohl struggled, throwing for 151 yards and two interceptions.

Baldwin Wallace falls to Ohio Northern 37-35
After an opening week victory, Baldwin Wallace lost their first game of the season to Ohio Northern. Ohio Northern quarterback Patrick Angle was the leader of the offense attack. He threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown. Ohio Northern receiver Devon Price caught ten passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Baldwin Wallace quarterback threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

John Carroll rolls over Heidelberg 43-16
John Carroll was dominant once again in Saturday’s win over Heidelberg. John Carroll and former St. Ignatius quarterback Mark Myers threw for 392 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. Blue Streaks running back Tommy Michals ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Myers favorite target was receiver Aramis Greenwood, who had six catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. John Carroll moves to 2-0 on the season.

Mount Union dominates Muskingum 62-6
Mount Union continued their tradition and rolled over another OAC team. Former St. Edward quarterback Kevin Burke, who threw for 272 yards and four touchdowns, led the Purple Raiders. His main targets were receivers Roman Namdar and Luc Meacham. Namdar had three catches for 76 yards and touchdown, while Meacham had four receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Mount Union had three running backs reach at least 70 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Mount Union defense held Heidelberg’s offense to only 128 yards. The Purple Raiders move to 2-0 on the season.

High School Football
Hudson cruises over Brunswick 41-14
The Explorers looked impressed again this week with a quality victory over 3-1 Brunswick. Hudson quarterback Mitch Guadagni excelled again, throwing for 352 yards and five touchdowns and added 93 yards on the ground. His main target was Reid Robinson, who had seven catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Matt Restifo also had four receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Another of Guadagni’s targets, Colton Whited, had five catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. The Explorers remain perfect at 4-0 on the season.

Saint Vincent-Saint Mary loses to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 35-10
The Fighting Irish struggled this week against powerhouse Cardinal Mooney. Quarterback Jon Saadey, who threw for 149 yards and touchdown and rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown, led Mooney’s attack. The Cardinals offense had a total of 399 yards of offense. The Irish had 269 combined rushing yards from Vince Lockett and quarterback Dom Davis. The Irish fall to 2-2 on the season.

St. Edward upset by Cincinnati Elder 21-14
The top ranked Eagles lost their first game of the season to Cincinnati Elder, moving to 3-1 on the season. Quarterback Brett Kean, who threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, led the Eagles’ offensive attack. His main target was receiver Alex Stump, who had 11 catches for 109 yards. The Eagles defense was able to force four interceptions in the losing effort. Elder running back Ja’Vahri Portis scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter for Elder.

Glenville beats John Hay 47-0
Glenville started their Senate league season off with a dominating win over John Hay. The Tarblooders were led by running back Christopher Lavette, who had 111 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. Running back Trevon Story had 74 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Devontae Houston had eight carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. Glenville moves to 2-2 on the season.

Mentor cruises by Twinsburg 54-7
Mentor continued their offensive explosion this week with a win over Twinsburg. Quarterback Jake Floriea, who threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown, led Mentor’s offense. Eddie Daugherty had a receiving and a rushing touchdown, while Alex Mathews had two rushing touchdowns on the day. Mentor remains perfect moving to 4-0 on the season.

St. Ignatius beats Assumption College School (CAN) 49-13
The Wildcats moved to 3-1 on the season with the win over the Canadian team of Assumption College School. St. Ignatius won the game on the ground, rushing for 279 total yards as a team. Running back Chavez Perez rushed 14 times for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Jack Cook had three receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcat defense was able to hold their opponent to -2 yards rushing in the game.
St. Ignatius @ Paramus Catholic (NJ) (Sat. 2pm)
Strongsville falls to Solon 19-7
Solon remained perfect on the season after their win over previously unbeaten Strongsville. Solon was led by their defense, including a huge play by Joe Bubonics. Bubonics intercepted a Strongsville pass and took it 56 yards for a touchdown, making the game 17-7. On offense, quarterback Johnny Mooney threw for 109 yards and a touchdown. Strongsville saw a strong performance from running back Dominic Lombardo, who had 112 yards on 20 carries.

Solon vs Valley Forge (Fri. 7pm)
Avon topples Lakewood 35-0
Avon remained unbeaten after the convincing win over Lakewood on Friday. Avon’s offense saw a great performance form Gerett Choat. On the day, he scored a receiving touchdown and three rushing touchdowns. Avon quarterback had two touchdown passes in the game, too. Avon moves to 4-0 on the season after this convincing win over Lakewood.

Benedictine rolls over Holy Name 45-7
Benedictine got back on track this week with a win over Holy Name. Quarterback Brian Schoeffler had two rushing touchdowns along with a touchdown pass. Running backs DeCavillon Reese and Dontez Rash combined to rush for over 300 yards for Benedictine. With this win, the Bengals move to 3-1 on the season.

Bedford beats Cleveland Heights 48-14
Bedford continued its perfect season with a win over Cleveland Heights. Bedford saw an impressive show on the ground from running back Chawntez Moss. Moss ran 18 times for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Bedford quarterback Carlin Colston threw for 158 yards and a touchdown. His main target was Cameron Odom, who had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Bedford moves to 4-0 on the season.

Nordonia wins over Highland 44-21
Nordonia remained perfect at 4-0 with the win over Highland. Nordonia quarterback David Murray threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Both wide receivers Dylan Mabin and Denzel Ward had great performances in the victory. Receiver Mabin had 142 yards receiving and a touchdown reception. Also, receiver Ward had 165 receiving yards and a touchdown reception.

No they run mostly the spread now
