October 8, 2014Video: Brian Hoyer on the Dan Patrick Show
October 8, 2014The Cleveland Browns defensive secondary has struggled so far this season. Early on, I thought it had more to do with the pass rush not working and opposing quarterbacks having too much time. It also didn’t help that the first three quarterbacks the Browns faced this year â Roethlisberger, Flacco and Brees â are all guys who have won Super Bowls. Yet again though, on Sunday against Jake Locker and Charlie Whitehurst of the Titans, the Browns’ secondary struggled, none more so than Buster Skrine according to Pro Football Focus.
Buster Skrine, CB: -3.3
Breakdown: Buster Skrine allowed five catches on six targets for 122 yards and two touchdowns. On both touchdowns Skrine was beaten easily; Justin Hunter managed to get behind him on a âGoâ route to score a 75 yard touchdown. On the second touchdown Kendall Wright was able to run a corner route with Skrine yards behind because Skrine was playing inside leverage leaving a huge amount of ground to cover to the outside.
Signature Stat: Skrine allowed 3.13 yards per coverage snap and the Titans quarterbacks had a perfect QB Rating when attempting a pass his way.
Joe Haden didn’t have a spectacular day and also injured his hip. We’ll see if that impacts his status in practice and for the upcoming Steelers game. The good news is that K’Waun Williams had a good day for the Browns on Sunday, earning a Rookie of the Week nomination. The bad news is that the Browns first-overall selection in this year’s draft, Justin Gilbert, only played for eight snaps in the entire game.

Our D: Coaches on down…

This week should be the most interesting, with it being the first time the Browns are playing a team for the second time. Considering O’Neill’s strength has been adjustments to what he’s seen, will that help? Because if they come unprepared yet again there’s something seriously wrong there.
I have to guess that it’s as much scheme as players as all DBs have looked bad most of the time. When the best CB in a game is a guy who let’s the WR catch the ball but makes the tackle right away (and you’re not playing a Tampa-2 defense), then something is wrong.
hell of a pressure on jake locker tho.
probably/mightve won the game with his aggressiveness there. if skrine’s blitz isnt high and hard (and clean) we never see charlie whitehurst.
ironically PFF likely graded that a minus play because he got one of the new-style roughing the passer penalties.
the lesson as always, stats without context.. not great.
Yeah, considering the entire D looks confused something’s gotta be up with the scheme. Heard Zegura and Joe Jurevicius talking yesterday on CBD about Rex Ryan telling Pettine to simplify the scheme in Collision Low Crossers when he was with the Jets because he was overwhelming them with too much too soon. Wonder if some of the same isn’t at play here?
Heard an interview earlier with Jim Leonard where he said it takes about five weeks before Pettine’s D starts to come together in the first year.
Interested to see who seizes the opportunity and steps up.
So, where the hell is Hughes?
Anybody have any idea?
dang — nevermind, Sam Gold found better info. That’s not good.
This is from last week:
“DE John Hughes has been ruled out. Hughes was the surprise injury this week, but the hamstring issue must be too significant to be able to play with.”
http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2014/9/6/6113111/browns-steelers-injury-report-john-hughes-out-desmond-bryant-doubtful
Well, that answers that.
Crap.
He was stout against the run.
Fingers crossed the bye and last week got him healthy for Pukesburgh.
That report is from Monday.
He’s out vs the Squeelers. :/
Geez, totally missed that. Bummer.
Skrine is what I thought he was and that’s at best a nickel or dime cover playing in the slot. It’s way to early to give up on Justin Gilbert just look at the way the All Pro on the other side has played.
Mingo is screwed, then.
Unfortunately, the Steelers are also playing a team for the second time. That worries me.
…yup.
but, which team are they playing? our team has been so hot & cold & generally inconsistent that it must make it tough for opposing teams to get a handle on us đ
lane adkins reports hughes is dealing with a hamstring and hip issue.
also, “Hughes and Kitchen will work this week and there is a reasonable chance they play. Taylor is out.”
Scott, Craig, WFNY crew: Can someone digest or write a cool article about all of the Browns first round picks since Joe Thomas? I ask because Gilbert is one of those bust first round picks that did not work out I think. Most the Browns first round picks, with maybe the exception of Haden, have not panned out. The solid players on this team seem to be 3rd round through undrafted guys.
I even think Manziel, Richardson, Gilbert, Weedon, MINGO, Taylor, a ton of our recent picks are ZERO part of the current team’s success and improvement…
Are you trying to get me to take my own life? đ
No Craig. But I have been tempted to replay to the Winners and Losers article every week the following: “Losers: Any Browns first round draft pick not named Thomas and Mack”
What would be cool is to see which rounds the browns have had the best success in the drafts with. And honestly, it is hard to get excited about two first round picks next year when the picks are always duds that don’t pan out. Why is Mingo so disappointing?
dont forget quinn.
I would like to forget him.
Phil Taylor has been a consistent starter at least.
That report is from September 6th…..
Yes, I realized that and acknowledged my oversight FOUR hours prior to your notification but thanks for picking up the baton of keeping me on point…
Look, I’m as disappointed as anyone that Gilbert didn’t come out of the gate guns blazing but can we hold off on the bust talk for the second most difficult position to transition from college to the NFL until at least, say, half way through his ROOKIE season?!
Well, let’s hope they’re only preparing for the crappy team. Good thing Dick LeBeau is a terrible DC.
For Gilbert, sure, no problem. However, Mingo, Taylor, several others, I am kind of down on, yet I think this year’s team is better than last year’s, and I am trying to wrap my head around which personnel it is true for, and by and large, it is not recent first round picks.,
Don’t know how that report came out dated 10/6 but here’s today’s report from Grossi:
“Joining nose tackle Ahtyba Rubin and end Desmond Bryant in early drills at practice was John Hughes. Pettine also said that Ishmaaâily Kitchen would be active for the Pittsburgh game. Hughes was a healthy scratch in Tennessee; Kitchen has been inactive the past three games.”

Well, it looks like NFL.com just ran an article that summarizes all of this:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000407662/article/geno-smith-nick-foles-among-top-10-disappointments
It lists Phil Taylor, Mingo, Haden, Gilbert, Manziel, Weeden, and Richardson as “disappointments.” They are. If the first three names at least can step up, the team will be better defensively. Until then, it can be disappointing.
